Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners first if you want a short, emotionally intense tragedy centered on one young protagonist and powered by neon cyberpunk spectacle. Choose Akudama Drive if you prefer a 12-episode ensemble crime thriller in which an ordinary civilian is pulled into a dangerous operation with notorious criminals. Both are dystopian, violent and visually ambitious, but they deliver very different kinds of momentum: Edgerunners builds toward a personal collapse in Night City, while Akudama Drive runs like a criminal mission through an original, distorted society.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners vs. Akudama Drive at a glance
The simplest choice is about what you want the story to organize around: one character’s emotional descent or a team’s escalating operation. The table below separates the concrete format and setting differences before looking at tone and themes.
| Axis | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Akudama Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Episode commitment | 10 episodes | 12 episodes, approximately 30 minutes each |
| Release and format | 2022 standalone anime season | Original television anime broadcast October 8–December 24, 2020 |
| Narrative center | A street kid trying to survive and ultimately confronting the costs of life in Night City | A civilian girl swept into the work of a group of notorious criminals |
| World | Night City in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe | A highly developed but distorted society divided between the Kansai and Kantō spheres |
| Production | Netflix, CD PROJEKT RED and Studio Trigger | Studio Pierrot and TooKyoGames |
| Story engine | Personal tragedy, body modification, corporate power and rapid escalation | Criminal missions, group chemistry, pursuit and a civilian’s forced transformation |
| Best match | Viewers who want concentrated emotion, graphic action and a tragic character arc | Viewers who want ensemble dynamics, heist-like momentum and a self-contained original setting |
These are both complete stories you can watch without committing to a long franchise. Edgerunners is the shorter binge, while Akudama Drive gives its larger cast a little more running time to move between missions and revelations.

A standalone story in Night City
Netflix describes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a standalone, 10-episode story about “a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future.” It is set in the same fictional universe as Cyberpunk 2077, but the anime is designed to stand on its own. You do not need to play the game or know its plot to follow the series; the show introduces its own characters, conflicts and emotional stakes.
#1 Best Overall
The setting matters because Night City treats technology as both a promise and a trap. Cybernetic implants can make a person faster, stronger or more capable, yet every upgrade carries social, physical and psychological costs. The city is shaped by corporate power, economic inequality and a culture that encourages people to replace more of themselves in order to compete. That pressure gives the protagonist’s survival problem a clear direction: staying alive means entering the same system that is consuming people around him.
Why the 10-episode format feels intense
With only 10 episodes, the series moves quickly from street-level desperation to a much larger conflict. Relationships form under pressure, ambitions expand, and the consequences of cybernetic enhancement arrive without long detours. The compressed structure is a strength if you want a binge that keeps escalating; it can feel emotionally abrupt if you prefer a slower story that pauses to explore every supporting character.
The show’s tone is severe. Expect graphic violence, body horror, explicit danger and a story that does not treat its characters as protected by plot convenience. Its emotional impact comes from watching a young person make understandable choices inside a system that rewards risk until risk becomes self-destruction. The neon color, kinetic action and heavy music provide spectacle, but the central experience is tragic rather than triumphant.

What Akudama Drive is about
An original crime thriller rather than a game adaptation
Akudama Drive is an original 12-episode television anime produced by Studio Pierrot and TooKyoGames. It aired from October 8 through December 24, 2020, with episodes running approximately 30 minutes. The production’s official introduction calls its setting “a highly developed but distorted society,” where criminals are known as Akudama.
Crunchyroll’s official synopsis establishes the hook: “Six criminals known as Akudama receive missions given to them by a mysterious black cat.” A civilian girl becomes entangled in their way of life, initially lacking the identity and reputation that define the criminals around her. That contrast gives the series two simultaneous viewpoints: the professionals who have made crime their identity and the ordinary person forced to improvise among them.
How the ensemble changes the story
Instead of following one person’s rise and collapse, Akudama Drive distributes attention across a crew with different skills, temperaments and personal codes. The group is not a conventional family or heroic team. Members cooperate because a job requires it, because a reward is attractive or because a larger threat leaves no safer option. Their competing motives create friction inside every operation.
The mission structure supplies forward motion. Assignments arrive, the criminals prepare, the plan collides with the authorities or the environment, and the consequences reshape the next step. That rhythm makes the show feel closer to a heist or pursuit thriller than to a coming-of-age drama. The civilian’s perspective keeps the action legible: she is learning the rules at the same time the viewer is learning what this society considers normal.
Who is most likely to prefer it
- Viewers who enjoy ensemble casts with clashing personalities and specialized roles.
- Fans of criminal crews, mission-based plotting and escalating heist energy.
- Anyone seeking an original dystopian world rather than a story tied to an existing game universe.
- Viewers who want a complete 12-episode narrative with a larger cast and a more overt operation structure.
How the stories differ in tone and stakes
Personal tragedy versus collective survival
Edgerunners asks what happens when one young person tries to survive by adopting the city’s values. The emotional line is intimate even when the action becomes enormous. Every new enhancement, alliance or job is tied to the protagonist’s attempt to secure a future and protect the people who matter to him. The tragedy grows from those personal decisions.
Akudama Drive asks how people with different identities behave when a society turns crime into a permanent category of person. Its stakes are shared across the crew and the civilian caught among them. The show is interested in movement through a controlled, divided society: who can cross its boundaries, who is pursued, and what a person’s label allows or forbids.
Established universe versus original setting
Because Edgerunners takes place in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, its visual language and social pressures are part of a larger franchise world. That connection can be rewarding if you enjoy recognizing the setting’s technology and institutions, but the anime remains accessible as an independent story.
Akudama Drive has no game continuity to learn. Its Kansai/Kantō division, criminal classifications and social hierarchy are introduced through the plot. The result is a more self-contained worldbuilding experience: you discover the rules as the criminals test them, rather than arriving with expectations from another medium.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Graphic action in both series, used differently
Both anime use stylized action, morally compromised institutions and high stakes. In Edgerunners, violence reinforces the physical and psychological cost of augmentation and the fragility of life in Night City. In Akudama Drive, action is often tied to the practical problem of completing a mission while authorities, rival forces or the environment close in.

Neither show is a gentle introduction to dystopian anime. If you avoid graphic violence, body horror or stories in which major characters can die, check content warnings before starting either one. The difference is emphasis: Edgerunners aims its impact at a personal emotional arc, while Akudama Drive uses danger to keep a volatile group in motion.
Which anime has the better pacing?
Choose Edgerunners for a concentrated binge
Ten episodes make Edgerunners the easier choice when your priority is a compact watch. The plot does not need a second season to complete its central arc, and its escalation is deliberately compressed. You can watch it over a weekend and experience a clear progression from survival problem to irreversible consequence.
The trade-off is density. Supporting characters and turning points arrive quickly, so the series expects you to absorb emotional information while the action is moving. If you like stories that hit hard and leave little downtime, the compression works in its favor. If you want extensive side plots or long recovery periods between crises, it may feel too fast.

Choose Akudama Drive for mission-to-mission momentum
Akudama Drive runs for 12 episodes of about 30 minutes, giving its ensemble and setting more room than Edgerunners. Its criminal assignments provide natural turning points, so each episode can introduce a new objective, obstacle or shift in allegiance. That structure is useful when you enjoy seeing a crew’s methods collide with one another.
The additional episodes do not make it a slow series. The premise is built around people being pushed into motion, and the show keeps that pressure visible. Its pacing is a better fit for viewers who want a thriller that alternates between planning, pursuit and discovery rather than a single uninterrupted emotional descent.
Which one should you watch first?
Pick Cyberpunk: Edgerunners when these are your priorities
- You want the strongest emotional punch. The story is organized around one young person’s choices and losses, making the payoff intensely personal.
- You want the shortest complete commitment. The season has 10 episodes and is explicitly standalone.
- You want recognizable cyberpunk themes. Night City, corporate power, body modification and economic pressure are central rather than decorative.
- You are comfortable with tragedy. The series does not soften the consequences of its world or its characters’ decisions.
Pick Akudama Drive when these are your priorities
- You want a team cast. The criminals’ different identities and skills create the show’s main chemistry.
- You want crime-thriller momentum. Missions from a mysterious black cat give the plot a clear operational engine.
- You want an original setting. The series builds its distorted society without requiring knowledge of another franchise.
- You want a slightly longer self-contained watch. Its 12 episodes, each approximately 30 minutes, leave room for more ensemble movement.
If you are undecided
Start with Edgerunners if you usually judge an anime by how strongly it affects you after the final episode. Start with Akudama Drive if you usually judge one by the chemistry of its crew and the ingenuity of its missions. Neither choice blocks the other: the stories are not sequels, and watching one does not spoil the other’s plot.

Are the two anime connected?
They share a broad genre territory, not a story continuity. Both depict dystopian societies, stylized violence, compromised institutions and people operating outside the law. Edgerunners is part of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe; Akudama Drive is an original production from Studio Pierrot and TooKyoGames. There is no requirement to watch them in a particular order, and characters or events from one do not continue into the other.

Where and how to watch
Streaming availability
The official Netflix catalog lists Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a 2022 season of 10 episodes. An official Crunchyroll listing covers Akudama Drive. Streaming rights and episode availability can change by country, so use the Netflix and Crunchyroll pages available in your region before starting. A title appearing in one service’s catalog in one country does not guarantee the same catalog entry elsewhere.
Physical editions and buying decisions
The official Akudama Drive site announces a complete-series Blu-ray release. If you buy a disc edition, check the exact region code, subtitle and audio options, included episodes and current stock for your country. Retail listings can differ by edition, and a listing’s existence does not establish that it is currently in stock.
The anime’s connection to Cyberpunk 2077 also makes the game a possible companion for viewers who want to explore Night City’s wider universe. The game is not required to understand Edgerunners and should not be treated as a replacement for watching the series.
A practical decision checklist
Use these questions to make the choice without relying on a generic “which is better” ranking:
- How much time do you have? Choose the 10-episode Edgerunners season for the shorter commitment; choose the 12-episode Akudama Drive season if two extra half-hour episodes are welcome.
- Do you prefer one lead or many? Choose Edgerunners for a single emotional center; choose Akudama Drive for a group whose members share and contest the spotlight.
- Do you want franchise context? Choose Edgerunners if a story set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe appeals to you; choose Akudama Drive for a completely original setting.
- What kind of tension keeps you watching? Choose Edgerunners for escalating personal consequences; choose Akudama Drive for missions, pursuit and shifting group dynamics.
- How do you respond to bleak endings and graphic violence? Both require tolerance for harsh material, but Edgerunners places its tragedy more directly at the center of the viewing experience.
Final recommendation
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the stronger default recommendation for most viewers asking for a short dystopian anime: it is a focused, standalone 10-episode tragedy with a vivid cyberpunk setting and a powerful central arc. Akudama Drive is the better targeted recommendation for anyone who specifically wants an ensemble crime story, a civilian outsider among dangerous specialists and a self-contained original society. Pick based on that distinction rather than on episode count alone, and both series can provide a complete, high-impact watch.
