Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is not a direct continuation of David Martinez’s crew. Creator Bartosz Sztybor says the new season uses a different cast to stay in “constant dialogue” with season 1, turning its rise-from-nothing story into a study of what happens when a former hero begins to fall. GamesRadar+ reports that season 2 is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on October 20, 2026; check Netflix close to release because availability and timing can change.

Is season 2 a sequel to David’s story?

No. Season 2 follows new characters rather than continuing David Martinez and his crew directly. That distinction is consistent with CD Projekt’s stated position: “David is dead. But Night City lives on.” The new episodes therefore expand the setting instead of reversing season 1’s ending or restarting David’s arc.

The connection is thematic and consequential. Season 1 established a trajectory in which an ordinary teenager rises through Night City’s violent mercenary world and pays the ultimate price. Season 2 asks what that kind of rise might look like after the glory has already passed, using a different ensemble to explore the same city’s pressures, ambitions and consequences.

How season 2 connects to season 1

A deliberate thematic conversation

Sztybor told GamesRadar+ that he wanted the second season to be in “constant dialogue” with the first. That means season 2 can echo ideas, emotional patterns and consequences from season 1 without bringing back its central characters. Night City remains the connective tissue: a place where one crew’s tragedy is only one story among many.

From “zero to hero” to “hero to zero”

Sztybor describes the seasons with a concise contrast:

  • Season 1: “zero to hero” — a rise from obscurity toward legendary status.
  • Season 2: “hero to zero” — the erosion of status after a character has already reached the top.

This is not simply a change in pacing or protagonist. It reverses the direction of the character journey, allowing the new story to examine fame, decline and the cost of trying to reclaim a vanished reputation.

Who is Weak Kingsley?

Weak Kingsley is a veteran edgerunner whose former success has faded. He represents the “hero to zero” premise: someone who once mattered in Night City now lives in the shadow of his own achievements. The report identifies Clancy Brown as Weak’s English-dub voice.

Sztybor has explained that Weak grew from a question he considered while writing season 1: “What if David made it? What if he didn’t die?” In that imagined future, David might have become a celebrity edgerunner several years later. Sztybor then rejected the idea of treating that success as a happy endpoint, describing David as a flawed, tragic persona whose celebrity would not end well. Weak is the result: not David returned, but a new character built to investigate the consequences of surviving, succeeding and then losing the identity that success created.

Season 1 and season 2 compared

Comparison Season 1 Season 2
Protagonist and cast David Martinez and his crew A new ensemble of characters
Character trajectory “Zero to hero” “Hero to zero”
Relationship between seasons Establishes the original rise-and-fall tragedy Stays in thematic “constant dialogue” with that tragedy
Role of Night City The environment shaping one crew’s story A larger reservoir of separate stories and characters

Does David come back?

Based on the creator’s comments and CD Projekt’s published wording, season 2 is not presented as David’s return. David’s story remains concluded, while the series continues through other people living in the same world. A thematic parallel such as Weak Kingsley should not be read as confirmation that David survived, appears in person or receives a new storyline.

Why tell another story in Night City?

Sztybor said the team began brainstorming with Studio Trigger before finding “other characters and other things to put in this season.” His explanation is straightforward: “Night City is a place full of stories and I want to tell more.” That approach treats the setting as bigger than any single protagonist. The city’s systems, criminal economy and appetite for spectacle can produce different kinds of tragedies, including stories about people who have already had their defining moment.
