Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a self-contained, 10-episode anime about David Martinez, a student who enters Night City’s freelance criminal underworld after a personal tragedy. He becomes an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw, or “cyberpunk”—and joins a crew led by Maine. Lucy, an enigmatic netrunner, becomes his closest ally; Rebecca supplies firepower; fixer Faraday supplies jobs; and the rival corporations Arasaka and Militech pull the freelancers into a much larger struggle.
This glossary explains who everyone is, what the major terms mean, and how the factions connect. The first sections are spoiler-light. Later sections are explicitly marked for viewers who have finished the season.
What is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone anime set in Night City, a future city obsessed with technology and body modification. Netflix presents it as the story of a street kid trying to survive by becoming an edgerunner. The season has 10 episodes, and you do not need to play Cyberpunk 2077 first to understand the anime.
The show uses its own cast and a complete story. Game references and shared setting details add context, but the anime gives you the information needed to follow David’s choices, his crew and the corporate pressure around them.

Core terms to know before episode 1
Edgerunner
An edgerunner is a mercenary outlaw, also known as a cyberpunk. Edgerunners accept dangerous jobs for payment, usually working through personal contacts rather than a formal corporation. Their value comes from a combination of combat ability, technical skills, contacts and willingness to take risks that ordinary employees would not.
David’s crew is a freelance team: its members share jobs and loyalty, but they are not a single legal company. That arrangement lets them work for different clients while also leaving them exposed when a client’s interests collide with a rival corporation.
Chrome
Chrome is the crew’s slang for cybernetic augmentation. David’s identity is tied to how far he is willing to push that augmentation. The series treats added hardware as both a practical advantage and a personal risk, so “more chrome” is never just a costume change.
Netrunner
A netrunner is a hacker who works through networked technology. Netrunners provide the team’s network and systems expertise, supporting jobs that cannot be solved with firearms alone. Lucy is the principal example in the anime.
Fixer
A fixer is a connected intermediary who arranges paid work. Fixers match clients with crews, pass along requirements and help negotiate access to the people or equipment a job needs. Faraday is the clearest fixer in the first season.
The Academy
The Academy is the elite school David attends before he enters the underworld. It represents the respectable path he is expected to follow, while the crew offers an alternative built around paid risk and personal loyalty.

Character glossary
David Martinez: the newcomer who becomes an edgerunner
David is the central young edgerunner and the character through whom new viewers learn Night City’s rules. He begins as a student at the Academy. A personal tragedy pushes him toward the criminal underworld, where he chooses the edgerunner life instead of returning to a conventional path.
CD PROJEKT RED describes him as “A young edgerunner who pushes his chrome to the limit in Night City’s underworld.” In practical terms, that means David is unusually willing to rely on cybernetic augmentation when a job demands more speed, strength or endurance. His ambition makes him useful to the crew, but it also creates the central question of how much a person can change before the advantages become destructive.
Lucy: the enigmatic netrunner
Lucy is the crew’s netrunner and its most important network specialist. Her hacking skills let the team approach systems and situations that a conventional gunfighter cannot. She is also David’s closest emotional connection, so her role is both technical and personal.
Official material calls her “An enigmatic netrunner whose sharp skills are the product of her mysterious past.” New viewers should treat that past as an intentional mystery. The spoiler section later explains what the series reveals; until then, it is enough to know that Lucy’s private goals do not always line up neatly with the crew’s immediate jobs.
Rebecca: the crew’s shotgun fighter
Rebecca is the team’s fiery, compact gunfighter. Her signature visual shorthand is the shotgun, and she is quick to help when the crew needs direct firepower. CD PROJEKT RED describes her as “Fiery and short, she always lends a helping hand — or shotgun — to the cause.”
For a first-time viewer, Rebecca is one of the easiest characters to identify in a chaotic scene: she is an aggressive close-range fighter with a strong personal presence. Her loyalty is expressed through action rather than formal speeches.

Maine: leader and mentor
Maine heads the motley crew of edgerunners and serves as David’s mentor. Netflix’s episode descriptions show David repeatedly seeking missions from Maine and learning through the crew’s work. Maine therefore occupies two positions at once: he is the person who controls access to the team’s jobs, and he is the experienced operator teaching David how to survive them.
His authority comes from experience and the crew’s trust, not from a corporate title. He decides when David is ready for more responsibility and demonstrates the practical lessons that the Academy cannot provide.
Faraday: the fixer between crews and corporations
Faraday is a well-connected fixer who sends work to David and his crew. He is not a regular member of the team; he is the intermediary who turns client demands into missions that freelancers can execute.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →His importance grows because he operates where independent crews meet corporate agendas. Netflix’s episode 8 synopsis places Faraday between Arasaka and Militech. That position makes him a useful guide to the show’s power structure: the crew may be freelance, but its jobs can still serve the plans of very large organizations.
Adam Smasher: cybernetic force aligned with corporate power
Adam Smasher is “Cybernetically enhanced past the point of humanity.” The series presents him as a corporate-aligned heavy whose purpose is to crush the dreams of upstart edgerunners. For spoiler-light viewing, think of him as the extreme endpoint of cybernetic force: a figure whose body has been transformed into a weapon and whose interests stand against freelancers trying to rise in Night City.
Arasaka and Militech: the corporations pressing on freelancers
Arasaka
Arasaka is the corporation most visibly tied to the show’s escalating danger. Its influence touches David’s Academy history, Lucy’s dangerous past and the later stages of the crew’s work. Netflix’s episode summaries describe forces trying to lure David back to Arasaka Academy and later refer to Arasaka preparing a lethal weapon.

You do not need a catalog of corporate history to follow the anime. In this story, Arasaka functions as a powerful organization whose plans reach beyond any one freelance contract. When Arasaka appears, the stakes shift from a local job to a conflict involving institutional resources and control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMilitech
Militech is Arasaka’s corporate rival. Netflix explicitly places Faraday between the two in episode 8 and names Militech among the forces surrounding the crew’s later missions.
The beginner-friendly comparison is simple: Arasaka and Militech are competing corporate powers, while David’s crew consists of independent operators who can be hired, pressured or endangered by that rivalry. The anime shows how a freelance team can become strategically important without ever becoming a corporation itself.
How the freelance economy connects to the corporate conflict
- Clients and fixers: A fixer such as Faraday turns corporate or private demands into jobs a crew can perform.
- Specialists: Maine’s team combines leadership, combat, hacking and adaptability so it can accept varied assignments.
- Leverage: Corporations can offer better-paying or more consequential work, but they also have greater resources and fewer reasons to protect expendable freelancers.
- Escalation: A job that begins as a crew’s survival tactic can become part of a struggle between Arasaka and Militech.
How the main characters differ
The following distinctions help when several characters appear in the same operation:
| Comparison point | David | Lucy | Rebecca | Maine | Faraday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Rising operator | Network specialist | Direct-fire combatant | Leader and trainer | Job broker |
| Relationship to David | Viewpoint character | Closest emotional bond | Teammate and ally | Mentor | Professional intermediary |
| Technical specialty | Cybernetic augmentation and field work | Network intrusion | Firearms, especially a shotgun | Planning, command and field experience | Contacts and negotiation |
| Cybernetic intensity | Increasing and central to his arc | Not defined by CD PROJEKT RED’s public descriptions | Not defined by CD PROJEKT RED’s public descriptions | Experienced augmented fighter; exact specifications are not established here | Not a crew combat specialist |
| Corporate alignment | Independent but increasingly exposed | Independent with a concealed agenda | Independent | Independent crew leader | Operates between corporate interests |

David’s cyberpsychosis progression
The series tracks the danger of pushing cybernetic augmentation too far. David’s willingness to add and use more chrome helps him perform beyond normal human limits, but the same escalation contributes to a progression toward cyberpsychosis. The show treats this as a deterioration that affects judgment, relationships and control, not merely as a power-up.
Betrayal and the collapse of trust
Because fixers, corporations and freelancers can all have different objectives, jobs become vulnerable to betrayal. Faraday’s position between Arasaka and Militech makes that danger explicit: information and loyalty have a price, and the crew cannot assume that a client’s stated goal is the whole plan.
The finale and Adam Smasher
The final escalation brings Arasaka’s lethal weapon plan and Adam Smasher’s overwhelming cybernetic force into the same conflict as David’s crew. Adam Smasher’s role is therefore more than that of a strong opponent; he embodies the corporate system’s ability to deploy a weaponized human body against independent edgerunners.

Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 first?
No. The anime is designed as a standalone story, and the official descriptions present it that way. You can watch the 10 episodes without prior game knowledge and understand David’s background, the crew’s jobs, the meaning of edgerunner and the Arasaka–Militech conflict.
Playing the game first may make shared setting references feel familiar, but it is optional rather than a prerequisite. If you are new to both, watch the anime in episode order; its own introductions establish the Academy, the crew, fixers, netrunners and corporate stakes as David encounters them.
Related ways to explore the setting
After the anime, readers who want more material can look for the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS paperback manga. It is described as the first manga set in the anime’s world and follows siblings Rebecca and Pilar before they join David’s crew.
The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit is a tabletop role-playing resource whose preview describes biographies of David, Lucy, Rebecca, Maine and the rest of the crew, along with background on technology and daily life in Night City. These extras expand the setting without being required to follow the anime itself.

Current status of the Edgerunners story
On July 5, 2025, CD PROJEKT RED announced Edgerunners 2, a new standalone anime made with TRIGGER for Netflix. The announcement quoted showrunner, story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor saying that David’s story might be over while more stories remain to discover in Night City. That announcement does not change the first season’s self-contained character arcs or the glossary above; release timing and regional availability should be verified when you are ready to watch.
