Crowd Variety Restored brings back more than 2,200 completed civilian appearances that shipped in Cyberpunk 2077’s files but were not normally assigned to street crowds. The Cyberpunk 2077 mod more than doubles variety for many civilian types, reduces obvious side-by-side duplicates and works with or without Phantom Liberty in current version 1.0.3.
What Crowd Variety Restored changes
The mod expands the wardrobes used by ordinary crowds rather than adding a new population system. Corpos, nightlife visitors, monks, Dogtown residents and other civilian categories keep their established visual identities, but the game can draw from many more outfits, hair styles, colors, cyberware combinations and accessories.
Its built-in “Twin Fix” addresses one of the most noticeable problems in Night City: two civilians with the same appearance spawning beside each other. When that situation would occur, the mod can assign another look from the same civilian type’s wardrobe. Quest-related NPCs are left alone, so named characters retain their intended appearances.

How much more variety does it add?
The figures below come from uploader dnbnhlp’s 2026 Nexus Mods listing. They describe wardrobe variety for specific civilian categories, not the number of NPCs visible at one time.

The listing says more than nine in ten civilian types receive additional looks. Across the categories measured by the author, the average wardrobe grows from 18 to 48 looks; 237 civilian types at least double their variety, and 141 at least triple it. These are publisher figures from the mod page rather than an independent benchmark.
What it does not do
No increase in crowd density
Crowd Variety Restored changes which appearance an existing civilian uses. It does not increase the number of people rendered on streets, add extra pedestrians or raise the game’s population limits. If Night City feels too empty, this mod is not a density solution.
No GTA 6-style social simulation
The mod improves visual variation, not behavior. Civilian interactions, routines and animation variety remain bounded by the base game. Notebookcheck’s 14 October 2026 report notes that a separate project, Crowd Walks Restored, adds unused walking styles such as worried, sad, angry, calm and confident, but even that combination does not create the level of interaction variety being discussed for GTA 6.

No changes to quest characters
The project targets ordinary crowd archetypes. Story, quest and other unique NPC appearances are not randomized by the mod.
Version 1.0.3 and Phantom Liberty support
Nexus Mods lists version 1.0.3 as uploaded on 9 October 2026 and updated on 14 October 2026. One download supports installations both with and without Phantom Liberty. This release also gives voices to nine vanilla civilians that previously had none.
Earlier 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 updates addressed silent civilians, restored voice reactions, corrected footstep and clothing sounds, added a no-Phantom-Liberty build and removed three see-through street appearances. Because game patches can change mod behavior, check the live requirements and supported game version on the listing before updating or troubleshooting.

Requirements and installation
The mod page lists three required dependencies:
- redscript
- Codeware
- Mod Settings
You can use a compatible mod manager or extract the downloaded archive manually into the Cyberpunk 2077 root directory. A manual installation should preserve the archive’s folder structure; merging only selected files can leave scripts or settings missing.

- Download Crowd Variety Restored version 1.0.3 from its Nexus Mods listing.
- Install it through your mod manager, or extract its folders into the game’s root directory.
- Launch the game and check the mod’s settings entry if you want to review the Twin Fix option.
- Test a busy district after loading a save. Look for greater outfit variation rather than more pedestrians.
Do not combine it with another mod whose purpose is removing duplicate NPCs or randomizing the same crowd looks. The author specifically warns against No More Duplicate NPCs and Lightweight Crowd Duplicate Randomizer because Crowd Variety Restored already includes its own duplicate-avoidance feature. Overlapping systems can overwrite appearance pools or produce unpredictable results.

The projects can address different weaknesses: one broadens appearance pools, another restores cut citizens, and another expands walking animations. None turns the game into a denser or fully reactive city simulation.

Why the same NPCs keep appearing
The base game has many more civilian assets than it routinely assigns to street crowds. As a result, the same limited subset can recur, especially in categories with small wardrobes such as junkie women or homeless men carrying backpacks. Crowd Variety Restored makes those shipped-but-unused assets eligible for ordinary crowd generation, which is why the change is most visible in repeated archetypes rather than in named characters.
Is it worth installing?
For players bothered by recognizable duplicates, this is a targeted visual upgrade with unusually large reported gains in several categories. It is best suited to an already-patched PC installation that can meet the script-framework requirements. Choose a different type of mod if your goal is more pedestrians, deeper civilian behavior or additional quest content.

Does Crowd Variety Restored work without Phantom Liberty?
Yes. Version 1.0.3 is listed as supporting Cyberpunk 2077 installations both with and without Phantom Liberty; verify the live listing after any game update.
Will the mod add more NPCs to the streets?
