Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 are connected by the same Cyberpunk universe and the same Night City, but they are not the same story. The anime is a standalone, 10-episode narrative about David Martinez, while the game follows a player-created mercenary known as V. You do not need to play the game before watching the anime, and watching the anime does not replace the game’s campaign.
The safest way to describe their relationship is as a shared-universe adaptation: common setting, technology, social conflicts and franchise history, with separate protagonists and plots. Official CD PROJEKT RED material confirms that connection but does not establish an exact in-world year or a quest-by-quest chronology, so claims that the anime is a precise prequel or sequel go beyond the documented evidence.
Is Edgerunners connected to Cyberpunk 2077?
Yes. CD PROJEKT RED’s June 25, 2020 announcement explicitly described Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as being set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077. That makes the anime an official expansion of the game’s fictional world rather than an unrelated series that merely uses a similar visual style.

It means the series is designed to work as its own narrative, with its own lead character, conflicts and ending. The connection to the game is therefore built through the world and its rules, not through a requirement to complete the game’s missions first.

CD PROJEKT RED’s current Edgerunners page presents David Martinez as a young edgerunner operating in Night City’s criminal underworld. The game’s official corporate history, by contrast, describes Cyberpunk 2077 as the story of a rising mercenary taking their first steps in Night City. Those descriptions establish parallel stories in one setting, not one plot retold in two formats.
What story does each one tell?
Edgerunners follows David Martinez
Edgerunners centers on David Martinez, a street kid whose life changes after a personal tragedy. He enters Night City’s dangerous mercenary world and pushes his cybernetic enhancements to their limits. The official premise frames the story around how far a person can go to overcome physical and emotional limits.
David’s journey is written as a complete dramatic arc for television. The audience follows one fixed protagonist, a defined group of companions and a tightly paced sequence of events across 10 episodes. You are observing David’s decisions rather than selecting them, so the series can control its point of view, timing and emotional emphasis.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts you in the role of V, a rising mercenary beginning a career in Night City. The game allows the player to shape V’s choices and route through the campaign. Its story is therefore interactive: the city, jobs and characters are experienced through missions that you accept and decisions that you make.
V is not David, and the game’s campaign is not a playable version of the anime. Their separate protagonists are the clearest reason the two works should not be described as the same story. A player can know David’s fate and still encounter a distinct narrative when starting the game, just as a viewer can watch the anime without needing to understand V’s campaign.
Does Edgerunners take place in the same Night City?
Yes. Night City is the strongest connective setting between the works. The official anime page places David in Night City’s criminal underworld, while CD PROJEKT’s history describes the game as a mercenary story in Night City.
That shared location matters because Night City is more than a backdrop. Both stories use a city organized around extreme wealth, corporate power, street-level crime and body modification. Characters can use cybernetic technology to gain capabilities, but those upgrades also create physical and psychological pressure. The setting gives the anime and game a common social logic even when their casts and plots do not overlap.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a viewer moving from the anime to the game, the city should feel recognizable in its atmosphere and institutions, but the game remains free to tell its own story. Familiarity with the anime can make the setting easier to read, yet it does not provide a mission order or a required route through the campaign.

How the connection works without making one a direct retelling
Shared worldbuilding
The two works share the Cyberpunk universe’s core ideas: a technology- and body-modification-obsessed society, a powerful corporate class and a criminal economy beneath it. Edgerunners uses those conditions to tell David’s personal story. The game uses the same conditions as the environment for V’s mercenary career.
This is a worldbuilding connection rather than a scene-by-scene adaptation. The setting supplies consistent pressures and possibilities, while each work chooses a different character whose response to Night City becomes the main subject.
Separate plots
Nothing in the official descriptions makes the anime a retelling of the game’s campaign. Edgerunners is identified as standalone, and the game is described through V’s rise as a mercenary. Treating the anime as “the story of Cyberpunk 2077” erases that distinction and can create incorrect expectations about what happens when you start playing.
Different storytelling control
The anime has a fixed 10-episode structure and a predetermined protagonist. The game gives the player control over V’s actions and progression. As a result, the anime can concentrate on one authored arc, while the game asks you to participate in its arc through exploration, mission choices and role-playing decisions.
These are complementary ways to experience the same universe. The anime demonstrates what a television drama can do with Night City; the game lets you inhabit the city through an interactive mercenary story.
When does Edgerunners take place compared with the game?
Official sources establish that the anime and game share a universe, but the material documented for this comparison does not state an exact in-world year or provide an event-by-event chronology. It also does not label Edgerunners as a definitive prequel or sequel to the game’s campaign.
Use the following wording when you need to be precise:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirmed: Edgerunners is set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077.
- Confirmed: both stories use Night City as a central setting.
- Not established by the cited official pages: a precise calendar year, a complete ordering of every event, or a quest-by-quest placement inside the game.
That limitation does not weaken the connection. It simply means the franchise’s official descriptions support a shared-world relationship more clearly than a rigid timeline. Unless an authoritative source supplies additional chronology, avoid presenting fan-created dates or a detailed sequence of events as settled canon.

Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 before watching Edgerunners?
No. The anime was announced as a standalone story, so a first-time viewer can begin with the series. You do not need to know V, the game’s mission structure or the game’s ending to understand David’s situation and the pressures of Night City.
Watching first is a good choice if you want a focused introduction to the universe. The series establishes its own characters and stakes quickly, then gives you context for why cybernetic upgrades, mercenary work and corporate power matter in this world.
Playing first is optional rather than necessary. It may make the game’s setting feel familiar, but it also means approaching the game with knowledge of an entirely different protagonist and plot. Do not expect the game to continue David’s story or to reproduce the anime’s episode structure.
Should you watch Edgerunners before playing the game?
There is no single required order. Choose based on the kind of introduction you prefer:
- Watch Edgerunners first if you want a short, authored story that introduces Night City’s tone and social conflicts before you commit to an interactive campaign.
- Play Cyberpunk 2077 first if you want to discover the universe through your own version of V and prefer to encounter its setting without prior knowledge of the anime’s story.
- Experience both independently if you want to compare how the same world supports a fixed television narrative and a player-directed game.
None of these orders is a canon requirement. The standalone designation means the anime was built to be understandable on its own.

How the release dates connect
The anime and game became especially linked in the public conversation during September 2022. CD PROJEKT’s official corporate history records that Patch 1.6 for Cyberpunk 2077 launched on September 6, 2022, one week before Edgerunners debuted on Netflix on September 13, 2022.
The same company history reports that the anime entered Netflix’s Top 10 in 19 countries during its premiere week. It also quotes then-CEO Adam Kiciński saying that more than 20 million players had purchased the game by the end of September 2022. These are company-reported figures, not independent audience measurements.

CD PROJEKT’s history says the anime’s popularity and the positive reception of Update 1.6 had a measurable effect on game sales. That is the company’s account of the release-era relationship; it should not be presented as an independently verified causal study. The documented sequence is still useful: a major game update arrived shortly before the anime, and the two releases reinforced attention on the same franchise.

What Patch 1.6 means for the connection
Patch 1.6 is relevant as a release milestone, not as evidence that the anime is required game content. The patch preceded the Netflix debut by one week, which helped align the game’s active update cycle with the series launch.
Do not infer from that timing that Patch 1.6 contains the complete anime story or that the anime’s events must be played in a particular order. The official history documents the dates and the reported commercial effect, while the standalone announcement defines the narrative relationship.
What Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition contains
If the anime makes you want to explore the game, CD PROJEKT’s official history describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as an all-in-one package containing the base game, the Phantom Liberty expansion, free Update 2.0 and previously released digital extras.
The documented physical console release debuted on December 5, 2023 for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. A digital PC distribution was also documented. Those edition details describe the game package; they do not mean the anime is included with the game.

Edgerunners MADNESS and other franchise material
The official Edgerunners page also identifies Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS, a manga about siblings Rebecca and Pilar before they join David’s crew. This provides additional franchise context around characters associated with the anime.
The same page describes an upcoming paperback from Dark Horse Comics. Because the source presents that paperback as upcoming, check its publication status and availability before treating it as a currently purchasable edition. The manga is supplementary reading; it is not required to understand either the anime or the game.

How Edgerunners 2 extends the universe
CD PROJEKT RED announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on July 5, 2025 as another standalone anime set in the Cyberpunk 2077 world, created with Japanese studio TRIGGER and planned for Netflix.

A later CD PROJEKT RED announcement dated August 21, 2026 gives the current premiere date as October 20, 2026. It describes a 10-episode standalone series with a new cast and storylines across Night City. As of October 16, 2026, that date is imminent but has not yet passed.
The announcement characterizes the new series as telling “a raw, human story of revenge and redemption.” Because it is described as standalone and built around new cast members and storylines, Edgerunners 2 should be understood as another entry in the shared world, not as a continuation that makes the first anime or the game a prerequisite.
Where the production connection comes from
CD PROJEKT RED announced the original anime with Studio Trigger and Netflix on June 25, 2020. The announcement credited Hiroyuki Imaishi as director, Masahiko Otsuka as assistant director and Akira Yamaoka for the original score. It also said CD PROJEKT RED had been working on the series since 2018.

In that 2020 announcement, Adam Badowski, then Cyberpunk 2077 Game Director and CD PROJEKT RED Head of Studio, called Edgerunners “our love letter to cyberpunk as a whole, and to stories told in animated form.” That description matches the practical distinction readers should keep in mind: the series extends the universe through animation rather than reproducing the game’s interactive campaign.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“The anime is the game’s main story.”
It is not. The anime follows David Martinez, while the game follows V. Their stories are separate within the shared universe.
“You must finish the game first.”
You do not. Edgerunners was announced as a standalone 10-episode story, so prior game knowledge is optional.
“The official timeline gives an exact year.”
The official pages cited for this comparison do not provide one. Use shared-universe language unless a future authoritative source establishes a precise date.
“Edgerunners 2 is a direct continuation of David’s story.”
The current announcement describes Edgerunners 2 as a new standalone series with a new cast and storylines across Night City. That supports a new entry in the world, not a confirmed continuation of the original protagonist’s plot.
“Buying Ultimate Edition includes the anime.”
Ultimate Edition is a game package containing the base game, Phantom Liberty, Update 2.0 and digital extras. The documented contents do not include the Netflix series.
Which experience is right for you?
- Choose Edgerunners first when you want a self-contained 10-episode drama and a fast introduction to Night City’s criminal underworld.
- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 first when you want to create and direct V, explore Night City interactively and make the major decisions yourself.
- Choose both when you want to see how one setting supports two different forms: a fixed animated narrative and a player-shaped mercenary campaign.
- Choose Edgerunners 2 later if you want another standalone Night City story. Its announced Netflix premiere is October 20, 2026, with timing subject to the published schedule.
The connection is strongest at the level of universe, city and themes. The protagonists, plotlines and storytelling mechanics remain distinct, which is why the works can be enjoyed in either order without a canon problem.
