Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a modern open-world RPG with cinematic quests, a large city to explore, driving, flexible builds, and a current package that includes Phantom Liberty. Choose Deus Ex if you want compact first-person missions built around stealth, hacking, augmentations, equipment choices, and alternate solutions. Both games share cyberpunk themes and immersive-sim ideas, but they deliver very different scales and rhythms.
Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex at a glance
The best choice depends less on which game has more features and more on what you want those features to do. Cyberpunk 2077 uses a broad open-world structure and cinematic role-playing format. The game’s structure supports a long-form character arc. You can alter a build, combine shooting with melee, use hacking or stealth, and move between missions by driving. That breadth makes the game suitable when you want your role-playing decisions to continue across a large campaign rather than reset at the boundary of each mission.
Why the open world matters
Night City gives you room to choose your own order and tempo. You can follow a cinematic quest, investigate another activity, improve a build, or simply travel through the city before returning to the main story. This creates a strong sense of scale and momentum, but it also means the game is more guided than a pure immersive sim: the world offers many options while the major storyline still controls the overall dramatic shape.
Build variety and moment-to-moment play
Cyberpunk 2077 supports experimentation across modern shooting, melee, hacking, stealth, and vehicle play. A build can therefore express a preferred combat style without removing the rest of the game. You might approach a mission as a direct fighter, use stealth to avoid attention, or mix weapons and hacking as circumstances change.

That flexibility is especially useful if you enjoy trying different character concepts during one campaign. It is less suited to someone who wants every room to be a tightly bounded puzzle with a carefully authored set of systemic interactions; Deus Ex places more emphasis on that specific experience.
The role of Phantom Liberty
The current complete package is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. The official product description says this edition includes the original game, every gameplay update, Phantom Liberty, and previously released content. The expansion adds a spy-thriller storyline in Dogtown, giving the overall package a distinct second tone alongside the main game’s character-focused crime narrative.
Because editions and availability can change by platform and region, treat “Ultimate Edition” as the product phrase to search rather than assuming that every store lists identical contents. Check the retailer’s current page for platform, region, price, and whether the copy is physical or digital.
What Deus Ex is designed to do
Eidos-Montréal describes Deus Ex as “one of the most influential games of its generation” and states that “Player freedom is at the heart of the gameplay and story of Deus Ex.” Those statements point to the game’s central appeal: you are given a mission, a set of abilities and equipment, and an environment that can support more than one solution.

The game uses a first-person perspective and combines skills, augmentations, weapons, items, hacking, stealth, and environmental interaction. Instead of treating these as separate activity types, it asks you to combine them while solving objectives. A locked route may invite hacking; a guarded route may reward stealth; a conversation, tool, or augmentation may open another option.
Compact spaces, dense choices
Deus Ex does not compete with Night City on geographical scale. Its authored mission spaces and hubs are more compact, which lets the design concentrate attention on entrances, security, resources, and possible escape routes. The smaller footprint is an advantage when you enjoy reading an environment and testing how its systems interact.
The trade-off is that the presentation feels older than a modern open-world production. If contemporary visuals, fluid movement, and a large amount of travel are essential to your enjoyment, the game’s age may be a barrier. If you can accept that presentation in exchange for systemic freedom, the compact structure is a strength rather than a limitation.
Agency as the main attraction
In Deus Ex, alternate solutions are not an occasional bonus. They are the design promise. Your route, tools, augmentations, and conversations can change how an objective unfolds. This makes failure informative: a blocked passage or depleted resource can encourage a different plan instead of simply asking you to repeat the same firefight.

Stealth, hacking, and player choice compared
Stealth
Both games support stealth, but stealth has a different job in each. In Cyberpunk 2077, it is one of several viable approaches alongside shooting, melee, and hacking. You can build around avoiding detection or use stealth selectively before switching to another style.
In Deus Ex, stealth is more tightly connected to route planning. A mission may be designed around identifying patrols, finding an alternate entrance, conserving equipment, and deciding whether to bypass or confront a threat. The game’s compact spaces make those choices easier to inspect and revisit.

Hacking
Hacking appears in both games, but the surrounding structure determines how it feels. Cyberpunk 2077 treats hacking as part of a broad modern combat and build system. You can combine it with weapons, melee, stealth, and movement across a large world.

Deus Ex uses hacking as one of several environmental tools. It can support an alternate route, change how you handle security, or complement an augmentation and equipment decision. The appeal is less about having a separate hacking activity and more about how hacking interacts with the mission’s other possible solutions.
TechRadar has interpreted Cyberpunk 2077’s hacking mechanics and environmental control as evoking classic immersive simulators such as Deus Ex. That is a reviewer’s comparison, not a publisher claim, but it explains why players often see a family resemblance even though the games have different world structures.
Player choice
Cyberpunk 2077 offers many build and quest choices inside a large, cinematic RPG framework. Choices shape your character, relationships, missions, and the way you move through the city, while the overall experience remains strongly directed by its production and narrative pacing.
Deus Ex makes the local problem-solving layer more prominent. The question is often not only “What decision should I make?” but also “Which route, tool, ability, or conversation will let me accomplish this?” If you measure agency by the number of workable approaches to a single objective, Deus Ex is the clearer fit.

Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for breadth
The open-world format is ideal when you want a campaign that can absorb long sessions and frequent detours. Quests, activities, driving, exploration, and build experimentation are all part of the same continuous space. The cinematic presentation also makes the game a strong choice for players who prioritize character-focused scenes and high-production storytelling.
The cost of that breadth is attention management. A large map and many activities can pull you away from a central quest, and the game’s guided structure may feel less reactive than a dedicated immersive sim. You are choosing scale and variety over a consistently dense puzzle-box experience.

Choose Deus Ex for concentrated missions
Deus Ex is better when you prefer to study a location, make a plan, and see how several systems respond. Its mission spaces and hubs focus your attention on the immediate objective. You spend less time traveling between activities and more time deciding how to enter, what to use, and how to leave.
The concentrated format can also make replay or experimentation appealing. You can revisit a problem with a different combination of skills, augmentations, weapons, items, or dialogue choices and observe how the solution changes.

Cyberpunk 2077: a broad action-RPG toolkit
The game’s combat range includes modern shooting, melee, hacking, and stealth. Vehicles add another layer that is absent from a compact mission-only structure. Build experimentation is therefore part of the game’s long-term progression: you can decide which abilities and approaches define your mercenary while still keeping access to a varied action set.
This is the better choice if you want the freedom to change your play style during a campaign or if you expect the RPG to provide spectacle as well as decision-making. Its systems support dramatic encounters and cinematic quests rather than making every encounter a pure stealth or infiltration puzzle.
Deus Ex: abilities as keys to solutions
Deus Ex treats skills and augmentations as ways to alter what is possible inside a mission. Choose this approach if you want the world to feel like a large television-scale production in which travel, action, and story scenes are always connected.
Deus Ex’s conspiracy-driven investigation
Deus Ex uses cyberpunk ideas to support conspiratorial storytelling. Its narrative appeal comes from deciding how to investigate and complete missions, then seeing how those choices interact with the wider story. The first-person view and systemic spaces help the player feel like an agent operating inside a problem rather than an audience being moved from one set piece to another.
Choose it if you prefer a story that leaves more room for interpretation through your actions and if you enjoy discovering narrative context while solving objectives.

Should you play Deus Ex: Mankind Divided instead?
If your interest is specifically the immersive-sim design but the original Deus Ex’s presentation feels too old, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a reasonable alternative to investigate. TIME’s review identifies it as a 2016 cyberpunk role-playing game released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and highlights its unusually broad range of ways to play.
It should not be treated as a substitute for the original game’s exact historical design or story. Think of it as a more modern entry in the same design tradition: first-person role-playing, augmentations, stealth, hacking, equipment, and multiple approaches remain the relevant reasons to consider it.
Buying Cyberpunk 2077 without choosing the wrong edition
