There is no official required order. Netflix presents Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a standalone, 10-episode story in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077. That means you can begin with the anime or the game without needing the other as homework. Choose based on the kind of first experience you want: watch the anime first for a self-contained introduction to Night City, or play Cyberpunk 2077 first if you want your introduction to be interactive.

The recommendation is an editorial judgment from the formats and official descriptions, not a sequence mandated by Netflix or CD PROJEKT RED. Because the official pages do not publish a spoiler map, neither order can honestly be advertised as completely spoiler-free.

The quick decision: anime first or game first?

Your first choice is really between two formats rather than two chapters of one continuous story. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a finite, 10-episode anime narrative. Cyberpunk 2077 is an interactive game in which you create a character, make choices and move through Night City at your own pace. The official material does not provide a reliable completion-time figure for the game, so this comparison should not pretend that one option takes a specific number of hours.

If your priority is… Start with… Why
A contained story with a defined episode count Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Netflix describes it as a standalone 10-episode story.
Interactive exploration and player control Cyberpunk 2077 The game lets you enter the setting through play rather than viewing a fixed episode sequence.
Understanding the premise without buying or learning a game Cyberpunk: Edgerunners The official description does not require prior game knowledge.
Making the game your first connection to Night City Cyberpunk 2077 You encounter the universe through your own character and decisions.

If you are undecided, watch Edgerunners first. It gives you a clearly bounded introduction and stands on its own. If you already know that you want a game rather than an anime, start with Cyberpunk 2077 and do not treat the series as mandatory preparation.

What the official descriptions actually establish

Edgerunners is designed as a standalone story

Netflix Media Center describes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as “a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future.” The wording matters: “standalone” indicates that the series has its own narrative entry point, rather than being presented as a continuation that assumes you have completed the game.

Netflix’s original announcement also calls the anime a standalone 10-episode story and places it in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077. Those two facts support watching it first, playing first or experiencing only the anime without claiming that one is the official prerequisite for the other.

The game and anime share a universe, not an officially prescribed sequence

Shared-universe status means the two works belong to the same broader fictional setting. It does not, by itself, establish that every event in one title is explained by the other, that a particular ending is spoiled, or that references appear in a specific direction. The official pages reviewed do not enumerate cross-media references or certify which order minimizes spoilers.

Accordingly, claims such as “you must finish the game before watching” or “the anime reveals nothing about the game” go beyond what the official descriptions establish. You can make an informed choice without relying on either absolute.

Why choose Edgerunners first?

You want a self-contained entry point

The strongest case for the anime-first route is structural. A 10-episode story gives you a defined sequence with a beginning, middle and ending. You can learn the basic idea of Night City through a focused cast and a fixed narrative, without first selecting a character build, navigating menus or deciding which activities to pursue.

Cyberpunk 2077 - Xbox One
  • Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, an action adventure story set in night city
  • Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night city
  • Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality

This is especially useful if you are testing whether the setting appeals to you. The official synopsis identifies Night City as a future city obsessed with technology and body modification. The series lets you decide whether that premise interests you before committing to an interactive game.

You prefer watching to playing

Format preference should not be treated as a secondary consideration. If you primarily want an animated drama, choosing the anime first avoids turning your first exposure to the universe into a game tutorial and a set of player-controlled tasks. The story arrives in the order its creators selected, and your attention stays on the episode rather than on character statistics or exploration choices.

You want a clear stopping point

The 10-episode count is an explicit boundary supplied by Netflix. After those episodes, you have completed the series’ stated story package. By contrast, no authoritative source cited here establishes a standard number of hours for completing Cyberpunk 2077; your route and stopping point depend on how you play. Do not choose the anime first because someone promises a particular time advantage. Choose it because a fixed episode structure suits you.

You are introducing the universe to someone else

For a shared viewing session, the anime can be easier to schedule than an interactive game. Everyone sees the same episode sequence, and nobody has to agree on a character build or take turns at a controller. That is a practical advantage of the format, not evidence that the anime is more important to the franchise.

What to expect if you watch first

Use the series as context, not as a game tutorial

Edgerunners introduces its own story. It is reasonable to expect the setting and its themes to be legible within the series, but the official description does not promise a step-by-step explanation of every game system, faction or piece of terminology. Do not approach it expecting an instruction manual for Cyberpunk 2077.

Keep your expectations about references measured

Because both titles occupy the same universe, you may notice connections when you later play the game. The available official sources confirm the shared setting but do not list individual references. Treat any specific reference as a detail to verify in the work itself, not as a guaranteed benefit that requires a particular viewing order.

Move to the game only if you want interactivity

After the 10 episodes, ask whether you want to control your own path through Night City. The answer may be yes, but it is not an obligation created by the anime. The series is officially standalone, so watching it is a complete choice even if you never purchase the game.

Why choose Cyberpunk 2077 first?

You want your first contact with Night City to be interactive

The game-first route is for readers who would rather act in the setting than observe a fixed protagonist. You can begin by learning the world through play, deciding where to go and how to approach the experience. That sense of agency is the defining reason to select the game first; it is not necessary to claim that the game contains more story or that it takes a particular number of hours.

You already know you want a game

If your main goal is to play Cyberpunk 2077, delaying it solely to satisfy an unofficial order adds a step that the official descriptions do not require. The anime is not described as prerequisite material. Start the game, then decide later whether you want a separate animated story set in the same universe.

You want to form opinions from your own choices

An interactive first experience lets you discover the setting through decisions made during play. That can make the universe feel personal in a way a fixed television narrative cannot. It also means your path is not identical to another player’s path, so avoid comparing your early experience to a supposedly definitive route.

You are comfortable with an open-ended commitment

The available information gives a precise episode count for the anime but no authoritative completion-time figure for the game. If you are comfortable starting a larger interactive project without knowing exactly when you will finish, the game-first route is sensible. If you need a bounded commitment, the anime-first route is the safer match.

Will one order spoil the other?

The honest answer is that the official pages used for this comparison do not provide a spoiler-direction guide. They establish that the anime is standalone and shares a universe with the game, but they do not certify that either order is spoiler-free or enumerate every cross-media reference.

That uncertainty has two practical implications:

  • Do not promise yourself a completely spoiler-proof sequence. Any article or forum post making that guarantee is asserting more than these official descriptions establish.
  • Choose according to format and commitment, then manage spoilers in the ordinary way: avoid plot discussions, episode summaries and game-ending discussions until you have finished the work you care about.

If avoiding even indirect familiarity is your highest priority, experience only one title at a time and avoid promotional clips, wikis and social-media discussions about the other until you are ready. This is a personal spoiler-management strategy, not an official statement about what one title reveals.

A practical plan for each order

Plan A: watch Edgerunners, then decide about the game

  1. Start with the series. Watch the 10 episodes in their normal release order on Netflix. The 10-episode count comes from Netflix’s official description.
  2. Pause after the finale. Decide whether you want more time in the universe or whether the standalone story was enough. You do not need to buy the game to make the series understandable.
  3. Research the current game listing. If you choose to play, verify the platform, region, edition contents and current price at the time you buy. Those details are not established by the official descriptions summarized here and can change.
  4. Choose the edition deliberately. CD PROJEKT RED’s franchise history describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as containing the base game and Phantom Liberty. Confirm that the listing you are considering uses that name and includes the content you expect; do not assume that every marketplace or platform offers identical inventory.
  5. Begin the game without treating the anime as a checklist. The game is its own interactive experience. You may recognize the universe, but you are not required to reproduce events from the series.

Plan B: play Cyberpunk 2077, then watch the series

  1. Select a legitimate current edition. Check the seller’s platform label, region and included content before purchase. No authoritative source cited here establishes current marketplace inventory or pricing.
  2. Start the game on its own terms. You do not need to watch the anime first to understand the game’s premise, and the official sources do not prescribe a sequence.
  3. Set your spoiler boundary. If you intend to watch the anime later, avoid searching for its plot, characters or ending while playing. The shared universe makes accidental details possible, but the official pages do not map them.
  4. Watch the 10-episode series when you are ready. Approach it as a standalone story in the same universe, not as a required expansion pack for the game.

Edition and access questions to check before you start

Game edition

CD PROJEKT RED’s franchise history identifies an Ultimate Edition containing the base game and Phantom Liberty. That statement describes the edition’s contents; it does not establish a universal price, a particular store’s stock or platform-specific availability. Verify all three at purchase time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming access

The anime is associated with Netflix in the official descriptions. Regional catalogs, subscription requirements and availability can change, so check the Netflix listing for your country before planning a viewing session. No evidence here verifies a separate third-party streaming partnership.

Do not infer cost or platform from the order recommendation

Choosing anime first does not mean it is universally cheaper, and choosing the game first does not imply a specific platform. The material available for this article does not establish current prices, marketplace inventory or a complete platform list. Those are purchase-time checks, not reasons to claim one order is objectively better.

What about Edgerunners 2?

As of October 13, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED says Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to air on Netflix on October 20, 2026. The announcement describes it as another standalone 10-episode story. As of October 13, 2026, that date was still upcoming, so it should be described as scheduled rather than as a series that has already premiered.

The announced sequel does not change the answer for the first series and the game: no official source cited here establishes a mandatory order among them. If you are planning a complete viewing schedule, check Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED for any updated release information after October 20, 2026.

Common assumptions to avoid

  • “The anime is a prequel you must watch.” The official descriptions call it standalone and place it in the same universe; they do not label it a required prequel.
  • “The game must come first because it created the universe.” That claim is not needed to answer the reader’s question and is not established by the cited descriptions.
  • “One order is guaranteed spoiler-free.” No spoiler map or certification appears in the official material summarized here.
  • “The game takes exactly a certain number of hours.” No sourced completion-time figure is available in this evidence, so do not use an invented runtime comparison.
  • “Ultimate Edition pricing and contents are identical everywhere.” The edition’s described contents are known, but price, inventory and platform-specific packaging must be checked where you buy.
  • “Watching the anime obligates you to play.” Netflix’s standalone description means the series can be your complete experience.

The best order for different readers

Reader situation Recommended first step Reasoning
You want a focused story and a known episode count Watch Edgerunners It is officially a standalone 10-episode story.
You want to control a character and explore interactively Play Cyberpunk 2077 The game-first route matches your preferred medium.
You are unsure whether the setting appeals to you Watch Edgerunners A self-contained story lets you sample the premise without a game purchase.
You already intend to buy and play the game Play Cyberpunk 2077 No official prerequisite requires the anime first.
You are arranging a shared viewing night Watch Edgerunners Everyone can follow the same fixed episode sequence.
You want to avoid outside plot information Choose either, then isolate that experience No official spoiler-direction guarantee exists, so your browsing habits matter more than a claimed universal order.

Bottom line

Start with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners if you want the most contained introduction: Netflix calls it a standalone 10-episode story, and you can understand that story without first playing the game. Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if interactivity is the reason you are interested in Night City. Both choices are valid because the official sources establish a shared universe, not a required sequence. Treat any spoiler advantage as uncertain, verify current edition and regional access details before buying or streaming, and let your preferred format decide.
