Buy the physical 64 GB game card if you care about resale, lending, collecting, or avoiding a full game download. Buy the digital Nintendo eShop version if you want immediate access, quick switching between installed games, and no cartridge to carry. Both are the same Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, including the complete base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion.

The deciding factors are therefore format-related rather than content-related: how you use your console, whether you need storage for a download, and whether the current physical and digital prices differ in your region.

Physical and digital versions at a glance

CD PROJEKT RED released Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, as a launch-day title. The boxed edition is a 64 GB game card; the digital edition is downloaded through the Nintendo eShop. The game content is the same in either format.

Decision factor Physical 64 GB game card Digital eShop download
Game content Base game plus Phantom Liberty Base game plus Phantom Liberty
How you get it Buy a boxed Nintendo Switch 2 copy and insert the card Purchase from the Nintendo eShop and download it
Storage and setup Most game data is on the card; updates and optional language packs can still download Requires enough console storage for the download and any updates or language packs
Resale, lending and collecting Can be resold, lent to someone with a compatible console, or kept as a physical collectible; you must have the card to play Tied to the purchasing Nintendo account; there is no cartridge to lend, lose or swap
Switching between games Requires removing and inserting the card Installed games can be launched without changing cartridges
Availability Depends on retailer stock and the region of the box Depends on eShop access, account region and the listing remaining available
Price Set by each retail partner and may fall during physical sales Varies by region, date and eShop promotion

If the prices are close, the physical copy gives you more ownership flexibility while the digital copy gives you more day-to-day convenience. A large digital discount can reverse that value judgment for someone who never resells or lends games.

What “Ultimate Edition” contains on Switch 2

The complete game and expansion

Both formats contain the same Cyberpunk 2077 base game and the Phantom Liberty spy-thriller expansion. You are not choosing between a full edition and a stripped-down cartridge: “Ultimate Edition” identifies the content package, while physical and digital describe how that package is delivered.

Updates included in the Switch 2 edition

CD PROJEKT RED says the Switch 2 edition includes every update released since the game’s launch. That statement applies to the edition itself, not to a promise that no future download will ever be needed. A physical buyer should still expect that updates released after the card was manufactured, or language files selected later, may need to be downloaded.

Switch 2 control options

The Switch 2 edition adds motion, touch-screen, mouse and gyro controls. These are available regardless of whether you use the card or eShop version. The development team described its approach as “The philosophy was to do it but not force it,” so the added input methods are options rather than requirements for playing the campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CD PROJEKT RED gameplay technical design expert Filip Downar explained the design goal in those words, and publishing tech QA analyst Jakub Smodrzak said the team had to “learn these motion systems from scratch, figure out a reliable way to verify their quality, and constantly share feedback.” The quotes describe the work behind the Switch 2 controls; they do not make one purchase format more capable than the other.

What you get with the physical 64 GB card

How installation works

  1. Check the front of the box for the Nintendo Switch 2 platform label and the words Ultimate Edition.
  2. Insert the 64 GB game card into the console with the system powered on or in sleep mode.
  3. Start the game from the Home menu after the console recognizes the card.
  4. Allow any available update to download before beginning if you want the current software available to your console.
  5. Download additional language packs from the Nintendo eShop if you need a language that is not already present on the card.

The card reduces the initial download compared with a download-only purchase because the game data is supplied on the card. It does not mean that every file is permanently fixed on the cartridge: CD PROJEKT RED and Nintendo note that updates and language packs can be downloaded, and the final installed footprint can change according to the languages you select.

Why physical ownership matters

  • Resale: You can sell the card later, subject to the condition of the card and case and to whatever price buyers in your region are offering.
  • Lending: You can hand the card to another player with a compatible Nintendo Switch 2, although you will not be able to play while that person has the only copy.
  • Collecting: A boxed launch-era copy can have value to people who keep physical game libraries.
  • Less initial downloading: The principal game data arrives on the 64 GB card, though updates and selected language packs can still require downloads.

Physical trade-offs

  • You must carry the card and insert it whenever you want to play if it is not already in the console.
  • Because the license is represented by the card, losing or damaging it can prevent access to the game until you replace the copy.
  • Retail availability is not guaranteed. A particular store, region or release batch can be out of stock even when the eShop listing is available.
  • A box from another region may not match your preferred account or language setup. Confirm the region and language information before purchasing.

What you get with the digital eShop download

How to buy and install

  1. Open the Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Use the search function to find Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.
  3. Confirm that the listing is for Nintendo Switch 2 and includes the Phantom Liberty expansion.
  4. Check the account region and the current price shown at checkout.
  5. Complete the purchase, then start the download and leave enough console storage for the game, updates and any language packs you plan to install.
  6. Launch the game after the download finishes. You can start other installed games without removing a cartridge.

The exact amount of storage required can change when you add language packs, so the eShop’s current download information is the authoritative figure for your account and region. There is no single permanent installed-size number for every language configuration.

Why digital ownership matters

  • Immediate access: You can buy and download the game without waiting for a store delivery or finding a physical copy in stock.
  • Fast game switching: Moving from one installed title to another does not require handling cartridges.
  • No physical item to lose: Access is associated with the Nintendo account that made the purchase rather than with a card you carry.
  • Promotion flexibility: A temporary eShop sale can make digital the better value when its price is substantially below the physical version.

Digital trade-offs

  • You need sufficient console storage for the full download, updates and selected language packs.
  • You cannot resell or lend the purchase as a physical game card; access is tied to the purchasing Nintendo account.
  • Downloading depends on eShop access and your internet connection.
  • The eShop price and availability can vary by account region and date, so a price seen in one country or on one day is not a universal price.

Storage, downloads and language packs

Physical does not mean download-free

The 64 GB card is the key physical-format distinction, but it is not a guarantee that the console will never connect to the internet for this game. Updates can add or replace software after the card was produced, and Nintendo says additional language packs can be downloaded from the eShop. Those language downloads can affect the final installed size.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If minimizing the first download is your goal, the card is the safer choice. If your goal is eliminating downloads altogether, neither format can be described that way because the documented update and language-pack behavior still applies.

Digital requires planning for storage

A digital buyer should check the current eShop listing before checkout and make sure the console has room for the complete download. Do not rely on a storage figure copied from an older listing or from a different language configuration. The final requirement depends on the files Nintendo makes available for your region and the language packs you choose.

Choosing languages

Decide which spoken and text languages you actually need before installing optional packs. Downloading every available pack can increase the installed footprint without adding anything to your playthrough. If a language is essential, verify that it is offered for your eShop region rather than assuming that every regional listing contains the same options.

Price and value: how to compare the two copies

Nintendo states that retail partners set their own physical and digital prices and that prices may vary. There is therefore no single worldwide “correct” price for this game. Compare the price shown by a retailer for the physical 64 GB card with the live Nintendo eShop price for the account region you will use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Price question What is established What you must check
Physical launch or current price Not fixed; each retail partner sets its own price and promotions can change it Retailer, region, stock, shipping and whether the box is the Switch 2 Ultimate Edition
Digital eShop price Not fixed; varies by region and date Your account’s eShop listing and the price at checkout
Sale timing Promotions can change the relative value Whether the discount is current and whether it applies to the complete Ultimate Edition
Long-term value Physical may retain resale value; digital has no resale option Whether you realistically resell, lend or collect games

Use this simple calculation before buying: start with the price difference today, then ask whether the physical copy’s possible resale or lending value is worth the inconvenience of carrying a card. If the digital copy is heavily discounted and you keep games permanently, the lower upfront cost may outweigh the physical copy’s flexibility. If the prices are nearly identical, physical generally gives you more ways to recover value later.

Which format fits your playing habits?

Choose physical when resale or lending is important

Select the card if you routinely finish a game and sell it, share games within your household, or want a shelf copy. The card is the transferable object, so another player can use it on a compatible console without your Nintendo account. Remember that lending also means you temporarily give up your own access unless you own another copy.

Choose physical when you want to limit the initial download

The card carries the main game data and is the better starting point for a slower or metered connection. You should still plan for updates and any language packs, but you avoid downloading the entire base package before the first launch.

Choose digital when you rotate games frequently

Digital is more convenient for players who move among several installed games in one session or dislike keeping cartridges organized. Once the download is complete, launching Cyberpunk 2077 does not require finding the card.

Choose digital when immediate access matters most

If you want to start playing as soon as the purchase is complete and the eShop download finishes, digital avoids retail stock, delivery and store hours. This is especially useful when the physical edition is temporarily unavailable in your region.

Choose based on the sale, not a fixed rule

Neither format is always cheaper. Check both prices on the same day, in the same region, and compare the complete Ultimate Edition rather than a base-game listing. A substantial eShop discount favors digital for a non-reseller; a small price gap favors physical for someone who values resale or lending.

Buying checklist for the physical edition

  1. Confirm the platform: The box must identify Nintendo Switch 2, not an edition for another Nintendo console.
  2. Confirm the package: It must say Ultimate Edition and include Phantom Liberty.
  3. Confirm the card: The physical release is a 64 GB game card.
  4. Check region and language information: Regional packaging and eShop language availability can differ.
  5. Check the complete price: Include shipping, taxes and any delivery delay when comparing with digital.
  6. Plan for updates: Have an internet connection available if the console prompts for an update or a language-pack download.
  7. Keep the card and case together: You need the card to launch the game, and the case helps preserve resale and collecting value.

Buying checklist for the digital edition

  1. Open the correct eShop account: Prices and availability are tied to the account region.
  2. Find the exact listing: Verify Nintendo Switch 2 and Ultimate Edition labels and confirm that Phantom Liberty is included.
  3. Record the live price: Nintendo says prices vary by region and date, so use the checkout amount rather than an old screenshot or quoted price.
  4. Check storage: Make room for the full download, updates and any language packs you want.
  5. Check your connection: The initial download can take time, and the console must remain able to access the eShop during installation.
  6. Complete the purchase on the intended account: The digital license is tied to that Nintendo account and is not a resalable cartridge.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistaking the base game for Ultimate Edition

Search results can show multiple products. Read the title and product details carefully. The copy you want must identify Ultimate Edition and include Phantom Liberty; do not assume that a similarly named base-game listing contains the expansion.

Buying the wrong platform version

The Switch 2 release is a specific edition. Check the Nintendo Switch 2 label on a physical box and in the digital listing before paying. A different platform’s disc, card or download is not a substitute for the Switch 2 edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the card contains every future file

The card includes the game package and the Switch 2 edition’s released updates, but documented updates and optional language packs can still be downloaded. Keep some storage available and do not promise yourself a completely offline setup unless you have confirmed the exact files your chosen language needs.

Comparing prices from different regions

A price in another country may not be available to your account and may exclude local taxes, shipping or currency conversion. Compare a local physical offer with the eShop price displayed for the account that will own the digital game.

Ignoring stock risk

A low physical price is not useful if the retailer cannot ship the correct regional edition. Verify stock, platform labeling and delivery timing before treating it as an alternative to the eShop.

Decision examples

The collector who may resell

Choose physical. The 64 GB card and box give you a tangible copy, and you can later lend or resell it. Accept the need to store and carry the card and the possibility of downloading updates or language packs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The player with several installed games

Choose digital if you value switching without opening the card slot. Make storage space first, then check the eShop price for your region.

The buyer on a limited connection

Choose physical to put the main game data on the card and reduce the initial download. Still reserve time and data for updates and any language packs you select.

The buyer who finds a major eShop sale

Choose digital when the discount is large enough that resale would not matter to you. The content is the same, and the lower current price can be the better value for a permanent personal library.

The buyer facing a physical stock shortage

Choose digital if you want to play now and the eShop listing is available. If you prefer physical ownership, wait for a confirmed retailer listing rather than buying an incorrectly labeled version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

For most buyers, the choice is straightforward: physical is the ownership-focused option and digital is the convenience-focused option. Buy the 64 GB card when resale, lending, collecting or minimizing the initial download is worth carrying a cartridge. Buy from the Nintendo eShop when immediate access, frequent game switching and avoiding cartridge handling matter more. In both cases, verify the Nintendo Switch 2 and Ultimate Edition labels, remember that language packs can change installed size, and check the live regional price immediately before checkout.
