Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world RPG about V, a mercenary in Night City whose attempt to steal an experimental implant turns into a fight for survival, identity, and control over their own future. Your lifepath, relationships, side quests, alliances, and late-game decisions determine which family of conclusions becomes available.
This guide explains the premise, characters, themes, branching structure, and Phantom Liberty in spoiler-safe language first. A clearly marked section later discusses the ending mechanics and the Tower epilogue in detail.
What is Cyberpunk 2077 about?
CD PROJEKT RED presents Cyberpunk 2077 as a narrative-driven, open-world role-playing game following V, a hired gun trying to build a name in Night City. V accepts a job to steal a one-of-a-kind implant connected to immortality. That job is the spark for the entire story: what begins as a mercenary score becomes an urgent question of whether V can survive, remain themself, and decide what their life means.

V has to decide how much to trust other people, how much to trust institutions, and what compromises are acceptable when the clock is running down.

There is no single personality assigned to V. You choose V’s background, appearance, abilities, tone in conversations, and moral boundaries. Two players can experience the same major events while reaching them with different loyalties and different ideas about what a worthwhile life looks like.
Night City is more than a backdrop
Night City is a corporate-ruled megalopolis built from contradictions: polished towers beside neglected blocks, private security beside gang territory, and luxury that depends on people who can barely survive. The central city gives way to the Badlands, where the streets, settlements, and nomad communities follow different rules.
The official description calls Night City “the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future.” That danger is not limited to gunfights. Corporations, gangs, fixers, state agencies, and media systems all compete to define what is valuable and who gets to make decisions. The city constantly turns personal needs into leverage.
Recommended Free Tools
You decide where to go, when to pursue the main story, and which optional jobs to accept. That freedom matters because side content is not merely filler. Optional quests can reveal a character’s values, create or repair alliances, open romance paths, and affect which support is available when V reaches the final stretch.
How the story branches
Cyberpunk 2077 is not a single linear film with cosmetic dialogue changes. It is a network of connected routes. Your choices do not all have immediate, visible consequences; some become important much later, when the game checks which relationships and quests you completed.
The four decisions that frame most routes
- Survival versus autonomy: V wants to stay alive, but survival can require surrendering control, accepting help, or making an irreversible compromise.
- Personal relationships versus institutional power: Friends, families, corporations, and governments offer different kinds of protection, each with a price.
- A quiet life versus a legendary one: V can pursue safety and intimacy or chase a reputation that may outlive them.
- What sacrifice means: The finale asks what V is willing to risk for a future, for another person, or for the chance to remain themself.
Your lifepath provides context and unique conversation options, but it does not lock you into one morality or one ending. Dialogue choices, mission outcomes, romance decisions, alliances, and the order in which you tackle content can all shape the route that is available later.

The core characters, spoiler-free
V
V is the player-defined mercenary and viewpoint character. There is no required gender, personality, or ethical stance. The game’s central tension works because V’s identity is partly yours: you decide whether V is pragmatic, idealistic, reckless, compassionate, ambitious, or some combination that changes from job to job.
Johnny Silverhand
Johnny is a rockerboy and digital presence whose conflict with V turns questions about selfhood into an ongoing relationship. He represents memory, rebellion, fame, and the danger of letting a powerful personality define your choices. The way V responds to him can change the trust between them and the meaning of their shared crisis.
Jackie Welles
Jackie is an early partner in V’s mercenary rise and an emotional baseline for the story. His friendship shows what loyalty and ambition look like before the larger forces surrounding V become impossible to ignore. His role is best understood by experiencing the opening missions without advance details.
Judy Álvarez, Panam Palmer, Goro Takemura, and Rogue Amendiares
These major allies represent different answers to the question of whom V can rely on. Judy’s arc explores intimacy, solidarity, and the cost of trying to protect a community. Panam’s story focuses on family, independence, and life beyond the city’s corporate center. Takemura embodies institutional duty and personal loyalty inside a rigid power structure. Rogue brings the perspective of an established legend whose history is inseparable from Night City’s underworld.
Their quests are optional context rather than prerequisites for understanding the basic plot, but completing them can expand V’s choices near the end. Treat them as character stories first and mechanical unlocks second.
Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 before Phantom Liberty?
You do not need to finish the base game’s story before starting Phantom Liberty, but the expansion is not a detached standalone adventure. It uses your existing V, the implant crisis, and the relationships established in Night City. Players who know the base premise and have spent time with V’s allies will understand the political and emotional stakes more easily.

If you are new, learn the basic situation before entering the expansion: V is racing against a threat to their identity and life; Johnny Silverhand is an active digital presence in V’s mind; and Night City’s corporations and factions treat people as assets. You can then approach Phantom Liberty as a spy thriller that adds another pressure point to that crisis.
What Phantom Liberty adds
Phantom Liberty takes place in Dogtown, a walled-off district controlled by arms dealer and warlord Kurt Hansen. V becomes involved with Solomon Reed, a NUSA secret agent, while political and mercenary interests collide around a high-risk operation.
The expansion changes the tone without abandoning the main game’s concerns. Espionage, divided loyalties, state power, and personal survival all feed back into V’s larger dilemma. Its cast includes Solomon Reed, Songbird, Rosalind Myers, and Kurt Hansen.

It reports over 100 new items across vehicles, weapons, clothing, and cyberware. Those additions are part of the expansion’s wider play space rather than a separate mode.
Does Phantom Liberty change the ending?
Yes. Phantom Liberty adds a major branch shaped by decisions made in Dogtown and can unlock an additional conclusion for V’s overall story. It does not replace every route from the base game. Think of it as an extra branch in the same decision tree, not a patch that erases the original outcomes.
Which edition includes Phantom Liberty?
The Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition bundles the base game, Phantom Liberty, and released updates. How many endings does Cyberpunk 2077 have?
There is no single, universally useful number to memorize. Cyberpunk 2077 offers a family of endings rather than one canonical conclusion, and the available routes depend on earlier quests, relationships, and final decisions. Some paths are tied to optional character arcs, while Phantom Liberty adds another consequential branch.
The game funnels you toward a late point of no return. Before that threshold, you can still complete side stories and build the relationships that influence the final sequence. After it, the game resolves the route created by your previous choices instead of letting you freely rewrite every variable.
Is there a true ending?
No route is identified as the official “true ending.” Calling one ending true is a player preference, not a fact established by the game. Each conclusion emphasizes a different answer to the same dilemma: how V balances survival, identity, loyalty, and legacy.
Can you get a happy ending?
The game does not reduce its outcomes to a simple happy-versus-sad scale. Some routes offer hope, intimacy, or a chance at a quieter life; others emphasize freedom, reputation, sacrifice, or uncertainty. Every route carries a cost because the story’s central problem is not solved by finding a painless option.

What the story is really exploring
Identity under pressure
V’s crisis asks whether identity is a stable inner truth or something negotiated with memories, bodies, technology, and other people’s expectations. Johnny makes that question visible: V cannot treat the self as isolated from the past or from the systems that store and manipulate people.

Institutions as antagonists
Lead writer Tomasz Marchewka said, “Quite quickly, during pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077, we realized that Night City is going to be our main antagonist.” That idea explains why the city feels active even when no villain is on screen. Its corporations, laws, markets, and social hierarchies keep creating pressure that individual heroism cannot simply remove.
Legacy and the desire to be remembered
Johnny embodies the seduction of becoming a legend. V can pursue recognition, but fame is not the same as control over the story people tell about you. The game repeatedly contrasts a public myth with private relationships and asks which one deserves priority.
The human scale of a giant world
Marchewka also summarized the story by saying, “When you simplify it enough, it becomes a story about ourselves.” Beneath the cybernetics and corporate warfare, the important decisions are recognizably human: whom to trust, what to forgive, when to let go, and whether a longer life is worthwhile if it no longer feels like your own.

Stop here if you want to discover the finale entirely on your own. The following section discusses the point of no return, the structure of the ending routes, and a specific epilogue added through Phantom Liberty.
The point of no return
The final sequence is gated by a point of no return. Make a manual save before entering it if you want to compare routes or return to unfinished side quests. The game uses the choices and relationships you established earlier to determine which approaches are available.
What the expansion’s additional conclusion means
Phantom Liberty can unlock the Tower epilogue, an intentionally final conclusion for V’s story. It is not a replacement for every base-game route, and returning to the usual pre-finale state after completing it is not treated as a normal continuation.
CD PROJEKT RED support explains: “This is as designed. Players returning to the Point of No Return after The Tower ending would result in an uncanny narrative experience we wanted to avoid.” The support answer also states that the game allows V’s story to simply end there. In practical terms, the Tower outcome should be treated as a completed ending, not as a temporary branch that restores the previous state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why the endings feel different rather than ranked
The routes are deliberate variations on the central conflict. One may place more weight on survival, another on autonomy, another on chosen family or reputation. The game does not provide an objective ranking, and the most satisfying ending depends on the values you gave V and the relationships you chose to protect.
Quick Recap
Practical advice for a first playthrough
- Explore character quests instead of rushing only the marked main missions; optional arcs can affect the final route.
- Keep a manual save before the point of no return.
- Do not assume a dialogue option is harmless because its consequence is delayed.
- Approach Phantom Liberty as part of V’s larger story, not as a disconnected campaign.
- Choose an ending based on the V you played, rather than searching for a community-approved “correct” result.
