Official side jobs and gigs are the stable, fully supported way to get more Cyberpunk 2077 story content. Quest mods are the experimental alternative: they can add new missions, branching choices, custom characters, voiced scenes and rewards, but they depend on community tools, may break after patches and are not reviewed or supported by CD PROJEKT RED.
Choose the official route if you want predictable progression and consistent presentation. Choose quest mods if you have finished the available content, play on PC, and are willing to manage REDmod, framework dependencies and troubleshooting.
What counts as an official side job or gig?
Cyberpunk 2077 uses several related but separate quest categories. CD PROJEKT RED’s quest-ID reference distinguishes [SideQuest], [MinorQuest] and [StreetStory] entries. The game may present all of these as optional activities, but they are not interchangeable in its internal taxonomy or in how they are delivered to the player.

Examples from the Phantom Liberty data include Dogtown Saints, The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman, Prototype in the Scraper, Heaviest of Hearts, Roads to Redemption, Spy in the Jungle, Waiting for Dodger, Treating Symptoms and Talent Academy. Calling every optional mission a “side job” is understandable in conversation, but “gig” and “side quest” describe different structures in the game’s data and presentation.

What a quest mod can add
Quest mods are not one uniform product category. A small mod may add a single encounter or objective, while a large project can assemble a multi-stage story. The open-source cyberpunk-codes repository documents a system for building story gigs with the following components:
- Journal entries generated for the player-facing quest log.
- Quest graphs that control stages and transitions.
- Scenes with dialogue, including voice and lip-sync support in selected projects.
- Reusable builders for common quest tasks.
- Map pins and custom non-player characters.
- Video holocalls and breach interactions.
- Choices that can change a payout.
- Wanted-level scripting and end-of-quest rewards.
Negative Balance, Dead Ringer and Acceptable Loss are documented examples of projects using those systems. Their feature lists show what a high-effort mod can implement; they are not a promise that every quest download has voiced dialogue, cinematic scenes or branching consequences. Read each author’s description for the actual scope.
Frameworks also matter. A Nexus Mods listing for Deceptious Quest Core reports compatibility work for Cyberpunk 2077 version 2.0 and Phantom Liberty. That statement is version-specific, so it should be treated as a starting point rather than a permanent compatibility guarantee. A game patch, framework update or expansion change can alter the result.

Official content versus quest mods

Which route fits your play style?
Choose official side jobs and gigs first when stability matters
Use the unmodified game if you are midway through the main story, rely on cloud saves or shared installations, play on a platform without community mod support, or simply want every quest to work after an official update. The official catalogue already spans long character arcs, investigations, combat-focused gigs and Phantom Liberty’s Dogtown assignments. You avoid dependency conflicts and do not need to diagnose whether a crash came from the game or a loader.
Move to quest mods when you want more stories
Mods make sense after you have completed the content you care about and want additional missions in the same setting. They are especially attractive if you enjoy discovering creator-made characters, experimenting with alternate outcomes or replaying a save to see different payouts. Set aside time for installation and rollback; the trade-off for variety is maintenance.
Use a separate modded profile
Keep a clean installation or unmodified save set for a stable playthrough. Before adding a quest mod, make a manual backup of your saves and record the current game version, expansion ownership and installed frameworks. This makes it possible to remove a broken release without losing a campaign.

How to install a REDmod quest mod
CD PROJEKT RED defines REDmod as a free DLC that adds integrated support for installing and loading mods and provides tools for creators. The official guidance says new REDmod-compatible mods should be placed in the Cyberpunk 2077mods folder and can be enabled or disabled through REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy.
- Confirm the game build. Note the exact Cyberpunk 2077 patch installed and whether Phantom Liberty is present. Read the quest mod’s requirements for that combination before downloading.
- Install REDmod. Add the free REDmod DLC through the launcher or store used for your PC copy, then start the launcher once so the support files are created.
- Read the author’s dependency list. Check whether the release needs REDmod itself, Quest Core, ArchiveXL, redscript or another framework. Install the versions named by the author rather than assuming the newest release is compatible.
- Back up saves and record the baseline. Copy your save directory and write down the current patch and mod versions. Do not test an unverified quest on your only long-running save.
- Place the files in the specified location. For a REDmod-compatible release, put the mod folder under
Cyberpunk 2077mods. Some frameworks use additional directories; follow the release’s exact folder instructions instead of moving every file intomods. - Enable the mod. Use the REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy controls described by the official REDmod guidance. If the launcher does not show the mod, close it completely, verify the folder name and restart.
- Launch and test safely. Load a backup save or a new test character, travel to the stated trigger location and check the journal, map pin and first scene. If the game crashes before the menu, disable the newest addition and test again.
Pre-install checklist for a quest mod
- Patch match: The mod page names your exact game version, not merely “2.x.”
- Expansion requirement: The page clearly states whether Phantom Liberty is required or optional.
- Framework chain: REDmod, ArchiveXL, redscript, Quest Core and any other dependencies are listed with compatible versions.
- Install path: You know which files belong in
Cyberpunk 2077modsand which belong in a framework-specific directory. - Update date: The author has addressed recent game patches, or you accept that the release may be unmaintained.
- Save safety: You have a backup made before enabling the mod.
- Scope: The description tells you whether the quest is voiced, branching, combat-heavy, stealth-focused or mostly text-based.
Common problems and recovery steps
The quest never appears
Check the trigger conditions first: some releases require a particular story milestone, district, level or phone call. Then verify that the mod folder is nested correctly and that every dependency loaded. A missing journal entry or map pin often indicates a framework or version mismatch rather than a gameplay choice.
The launcher does not list the mod
Confirm that REDmod is installed for the same game copy you launch, that the folder is named exactly mods, and that the release is actually REDmod-compatible. Restart the launcher after correcting the path. Do not assume a mod packaged for another loader can be enabled through REDmod controls.

The game crashes after an update
Disable the quest mod and its recently updated dependencies, then test the clean game. Check the author’s page for a patch-specific release. The Deceptious Quest Core compatibility note for version 2.0 and Phantom Liberty illustrates why an older compatibility statement should not be treated as proof for every later build.
Dialogue, lip-sync or scenes are missing
Those features are project-specific. Re-read the release description for required voice, archive or scripting files, and confirm that optional downloads were installed. A quest can function with text objectives even when its creator’s showcase includes cinematic or voiced elements from another project.

Restore the backup made before installation. Removing a mod in the middle of its quest can leave references in a save, so do not treat uninstalling as a guaranteed repair. If no clean backup exists, re-enable the required dependencies and contact the creator through the release page for project-specific recovery advice.

How to judge whether a quest mod feels “vanilla”
Look beyond screenshots. A mod is more likely to resemble an official gig when its description explains a journal-driven quest graph, clear objective progression, map integration, authored scenes and tested rewards. Documented support for voiced dialogue, lip-sync, holocalls and branching payouts is encouraging, but it still reflects the named project rather than the entire mod ecosystem.
Also check pacing. Official side jobs can spend time on investigation, relationship context or a cinematic handoff before combat. A community release may focus on a single mechanic or combat arena. Neither approach is inherently better; the important question is whether the format matches what you want from an optional mission.
Bottom-line decision
Start with official side jobs and gigs for dependable progression, coherent world continuity and publisher-supported updates. Add quest mods only after checking the patch, Phantom Liberty requirement, dependency chain, install location and author update date. REDmod lowers the technical barrier, but it does not turn community content into officially tested content. Treat each release as a separate project, keep backups, and expect occasional maintenance in exchange for new stories.
