Short answer: Phantom Liberty is an expansion, not a standalone game. You need Cyberpunk 2077 on a supported platform to play it. For a new player, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is the simplest way to get the base game and expansion together. Owners of the base game can purchase Phantom Liberty separately where that platform offers it. The expansion is not available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One; supported console versions are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, alongside PC. Mac availability should be checked in the current storefront because official Update 2.3 documentation lists Mac support but does not establish a separate Mac Phantom Liberty product listing.
What you must buy to play Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty adds a substantial spy-thriller campaign and systems to Cyberpunk 2077, but it does not run as an independent game. CD PROJEKT RED’s purchase guidance is explicit: “Cyberpunk 2077 is required to play Phantom Liberty.” That requirement applies whether you buy a digital expansion, a physical package, or an edition that includes both products.
Your purchase decision therefore starts with one question: do you already own the base game on the same platform family?
- No base game: choose Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition if it is offered for your platform, or buy the base game and Phantom Liberty as separate products.
- Base game already owned: buy the standalone Phantom Liberty expansion for that platform, provided your edition and account support the current-generation version.
- PlayStation 4 or Xbox One: do not buy Phantom Liberty for those consoles. They are not supported expansion platforms.
Licenses are platform-specific. Owning a copy on one console, PC storefront, or account does not automatically grant a license on another system, so verify the listing shown for the device on which you will play.

The Ultimate Edition is the clearest one-step purchase for someone starting from zero. If you already own the base game, buying the expansion alone avoids paying for a second copy of that game.
Supported platforms and the generation cutoff
Phantom Liberty was released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The expansion belongs to the post-1.6 version of Cyberpunk 2077, and CD PROJEKT RED stopped delivering new content updates to the previous-generation consoles after Patch 1.6. As a result, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One do not receive Phantom Liberty.

“Supported” describes the platform version, not merely the brand of console. A store page that says Cyberpunk 2077 is compatible with an older console does not mean that Phantom Liberty is available there.

Choosing between the standalone expansion and Ultimate Edition
Buy Ultimate Edition when you are new to Cyberpunk 2077
Ultimate Edition removes the most common purchasing mistake: buying only the expansion and discovering that the base game is missing. It puts the main game and Phantom Liberty under one product listing, which is especially useful when you want the complete released story before starting.
Use the platform-specific listing for your device. A PlayStation license, Xbox license, PC storefront license, and Switch 2 license are separate purchase contexts, and a physical package may still contain a platform-specific game card or disc rather than a transferable universal copy.
Buy Phantom Liberty separately when you already own the base game
If Cyberpunk 2077 is already in your library on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, the standalone expansion is the direct upgrade path. Confirm that your existing copy is the current-generation or PC version supported by the expansion. The add-on does not replace the base game and cannot be used by itself.

Do not buy a second base-game copy without checking your library
Storefronts can display several editions at once. Before selecting Ultimate Edition, sign in to the account that owns your game and check whether Phantom Liberty is offered as an add-on. This is particularly important for digital consoles, where the store may show a bundle even though you already own the main game.

The dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Ultimate Edition launched on June 5, 2025. It includes both Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty, so a Switch 2 buyer does not need to assemble a separate base-game and expansion purchase.
Digital and physical formats
- Digital: download the package through Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account that will play it.
- Physical: the release is supplied on a 64 GB game card. Confirm that the package is the Switch 2 edition, not a listing for another Nintendo platform.
The 64 GB figure identifies the physical game-card capacity reported for this release; it is not a promise that every future update will fit without downloads or that the digital install size is exactly 64 GB.
Switch 2 controls
This edition adds controls designed for Switch 2, including motion, gyro, mouse, and touch features. These are platform capabilities of the Switch 2 release, not separate editions that need to be purchased individually. If you are choosing between physical and digital copies, make the decision based on ownership and convenience; the control features are tied to the Switch 2 version itself.
PC buying and compatibility checks
CD PROJEKT RED states that the Update 2.0 requirements apply to both the base game and Phantom Liberty. The requirements are presented in separate non-ray-tracing and ray-tracing tables, so a PC buyer should compare the correct table with the way they intend to play.
Check the requirements before purchasing
- Identify the PC storefront you will use. CD PROJEKT RED names Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and GeForce Now among the PC storefront or service options for the expansion.
- Open the current Update 2.0 requirements for the base game and Phantom Liberty.
- Compare your processor, graphics card, memory, operating-system version, storage, and expected resolution or preset with the non-ray-tracing table if you will not use ray tracing.
- Use the ray-tracing table instead if you plan to enable ray-traced lighting, reflections, or shadows.
- Leave room for patches and installation overhead rather than treating the listed game requirement as the only storage you need.
No universal performance result applies to every PC. Frame rate depends on hardware, settings, resolution, drivers, and whether ray tracing is enabled, so a storefront badge alone is not a substitute for checking the tables.

Choosing a PC storefront
Select the storefront where you keep your existing Cyberpunk 2077 license whenever possible. The expansion must be associated with the same account or platform ecosystem as the base game. Buying the base game on one storefront and expecting an expansion purchased on another to merge automatically can lead to a non-matching library.
GeForce Now is named among the supported PC options, but cloud play still depends on owning the compatible game license and meeting that service’s current account and streaming requirements. Treat the service listing as a delivery method, not as a separate version of the expansion.
Mac and Update 2.3: what is confirmed
Official Update 2.3 documentation lists Mac alongside Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The same documentation says Update 2.3 is free to all players who own the base game of Cyberpunk 2077 and does not require Phantom Liberty or Ultimate Edition.

That update policy is separate from the expansion license. No standalone Mac Phantom Liberty SKU or regional Mac price was established. If you play on Mac, open the current Mac storefront listing and verify exactly which content is included before paying. Do not assume that receiving a free base-game update automatically grants the Phantom Liberty campaign.
Physical copy or digital purchase?
Choose physical when ownership and resale matter
A physical package can be useful if you want a boxed copy, a shelf edition, or the option to lend or resell the media where local rules permit. For Switch 2, the physical Ultimate Edition uses a 64 GB game card. For other platforms, packaging and included media can vary by region and edition, so read the retailer’s platform and contents fields carefully.
Choose digital for immediate access and account convenience
Digital editions avoid shipping delays and make it easy to install on the purchasing account. They are tied to the platform account and storefront, so verify that you are signed into the account that owns the base game or will own the bundle. Digital availability, discounts, and regional pricing can change; check the live store page immediately before checkout.

Use the product name as a search check
For a complete package, search for “Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition” and then confirm the platform name, included expansion, language or region, and format. For an add-on purchase, the listing should identify Phantom Liberty as an expansion and should not imply that it is a complete game.

Buying the expansion for PS4 or Xbox One
This is the clearest compatibility error. Phantom Liberty is not delivered on those consoles because new content updates ended there after Patch 1.6. If your only hardware is a PS4 or Xbox One, the expansion cannot be added to that installation. You need a supported platform such as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or Switch 2.
Assuming a base-game disc includes Phantom Liberty
A standard Cyberpunk 2077 copy and an Ultimate Edition are different products. Read the contents line on the box or store page. If Phantom Liberty is not named, treat the purchase as the base game only.
Buying Ultimate Edition when the base game is already owned
Bundles are convenient for new players but may duplicate a license you already possess. Check your library first and compare the bundle with the standalone expansion listing on the same platform.
Mixing platform generations
A PS4 or Xbox One copy does not become a Phantom Liberty-compatible copy merely because you sign in on a newer console. Verify the upgrade path and the current-generation product listing shown by your platform account.

Expansion ownership normally follows the storefront account that owns the base game. Before purchasing, confirm that both products appear in the same ecosystem and that the store page lists Phantom Liberty as compatible with your existing version.
Assuming every update requires the expansion

What happens after purchase
Digital console purchase
After payment, download or install the base game and expansion from the purchasing account’s library. If you bought the expansion separately, install or enable it from the game’s add-on management screen. The exact menu labels vary by console and can change with system updates, so use the platform’s current “Manage game content” or equivalent screen.
Physical package
Insert the disc or Switch 2 game card into the matching platform and allow the console to install available updates. A physical copy can still require downloads for patches and updated data. Keep the media available when launching if the platform uses it as an ownership check.

Install through the same storefront account that owns the base game. Apply the latest game and platform updates, then verify that Phantom Liberty appears in the installed downloadable-content list. If the expansion is missing, close and restart the launcher, confirm the account, and check that the purchase region matches the account region.
Troubleshooting when Phantom Liberty does not appear
- Wrong platform: confirm that you are not trying to use a PS4 or Xbox One installation.
- Wrong account: sign out and back into the account that completed the purchase.
- Missing base game: a standalone expansion will not launch without Cyberpunk 2077 installed on the same supported platform.
- Bundle confusion: check whether you purchased the base game only instead of Ultimate Edition.
- Pending installation: open the platform’s add-on or downloadable-content manager and start the Phantom Liberty download.

Prices, discounts, and availability
Prices, promotions, retailer inventory, regional licensing, and storefront availability change frequently. No single price applies worldwide, and a price shown in one country or on one date should not be generalized to every platform. Check the live listing immediately before purchase and confirm whether the displayed amount is for the standalone expansion or the complete Ultimate Edition.
Physical stock can disappear while a digital listing remains available, and the reverse can also happen during regional launches or promotions. Treat the platform, edition, and included-content fields as more important than a retailer’s abbreviated product title.
Final buying advice
Use Ultimate Edition when you need both games; use standalone Phantom Liberty when the supported base game is already in your library. Restrict the expansion to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the dedicated Switch 2 release. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not compatible with it. On PC, apply the Update 2.0 requirements table that matches your graphics settings, and on Mac, verify the current storefront listing rather than assuming that Update 2.3’s free base-game update includes the expansion.
