Short answer: Choose Switch 2 for a console-style Cyberpunk 2077 that is easier to set up, generally sharper in handheld mode and somewhat smoother in the tested scenes. Choose Steam Deck for PC flexibility: adjustable graphics, mods, desktop tools, trackpads, launch options and access to a much larger Steam library. Neither system wins every category, and the difference is as much about how you want to use the device as it is about frame rates.
Switch 2 or Steam Deck: the decision in one minute
Switch 2 is the better fit if you want to buy the game, launch it and play with minimal configuration. Steam Deck is the better fit if Cyberpunk is one game in a wider PC library. You can alter resolution, refresh rate, graphics presets and launch options, install mods, use desktop utilities and choose between different control layouts. That flexibility also means more setup and troubleshooting. Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie summarized the distinction as a console versus a PC in a console-shaped device: Switch 2 is the more streamlined console, while the Deck can run a broader range of software, including older PC games that may never receive a Switch release.

How Cyberpunk 2077 runs in handheld mode

Textures were described as broadly similar between the two handheld versions. The advantage is therefore not that Switch 2 suddenly has high-end-PC asset quality; it is that its reconstruction and display combination preserves more of the detail already present. Both versions reduce vehicle and crowd density compared with a high-end PC configuration, and both can stutter in dense areas. Switch 2’s cleaner image does not remove the streaming and simulation demands of Night City.
Steam Deck’s 800p presentation
The Steam Deck quality preset in the cited setup enables FSR 2.1 automatically. That gives the Deck a practical way to render below its 1280×800 panel resolution and upscale the result, but the output is softer than Switch 2’s DLSS-upscaled image in PC Gamer’s comparison. The test setup did not use frame generation, so its frame pacing and responsiveness should not be compared with a configuration that adds a frame-generation tool or a different community preset.
Steam Deck owners can trade image quality for performance or vice versa. You can change the in-game preset, output resolution and display refresh behavior, then save a layout that suits your preferred balance. Those controls are useful when you want to prioritize a steadier feel, but they also make the result dependent on your settings rather than on one fixed console profile.
Does either version run at 60 frames per second?
Do not buy either version expecting a locked 60fps Cyberpunk experience. The supplied comparisons describe both systems as capable of stutter in demanding areas, and the Switch 2 analysis calls its advantage “slightly smoother overall,” not a sustained 60fps lock. Switch 2’s 120Hz-capable screen can display a range of refresh rates, but a 120Hz panel does not make the game render at 120fps. Steam Deck’s cited LCD model tops out at 60Hz, and the tested quality configuration used FSR 2.1 without frame generation.
For a fair expectation, think of both as compromises designed for portable play: reduced traffic and crowd density, dynamic reconstruction and occasional frame-time spikes in busy scenes. Switch 2’s optimization gives it the more consistent-feeling presentation in the reported tests, while Deck gives you more ways to tune the compromise yourself.

Docked performance and TV play
Switch 2 gains additional clock-speed headroom when it is in the dock. The docked system can use higher clocks and more GPU power than handheld mode, and PC Gamer found it a little more powerful when connected. The port can switch to performance mode when the console is connected to a 120Hz display, giving you a choice between the default quality presentation and a mode intended to favor responsiveness.
That does not turn the game into a high-end PC build. The same broad reductions in traffic and crowd density apply, and demanding city areas can still produce stutter. Raising the output resolution beyond what the system can comfortably render can also make the image look blurrier, because reconstruction has less detail to work with.
Switch 2 includes its dock as part of the console setup, so you do not need to buy a separate docking accessory to move from handheld to TV play. You can detach the Joy-Con controllers for two-handed play, and the controllers support a mouse-like mode that can be useful for menus or compatible games. This is a convenience advantage rather than a Cyberpunk-specific graphics feature, but it changes how quickly you can move between portable and living-room sessions.
Steam Deck can also feed a TV or monitor, but it behaves like a small PC. You may need a compatible hub or dock, a power connection and time to select the desired resolution, refresh rate and scaling behavior. The Deck’s flexibility is valuable if you already use a monitor, keyboard or other PC accessories; it is less automatic than Switch 2’s console workflow.
Battery life: what the tests actually show
Battery results vary more than a single headline number suggests. Brightness, wireless radios, the exact city scene, frame-rate target, operating-system settings and battery condition all change consumption. The two published tests below used different methods, so their figures should be read as separate observations rather than as one universal battery ranking.

Switch 2 lasted longer in both reports, but the margin ranged from roughly 31 minutes to roughly 45 minutes. The second comparison uses Steam Deck OLED rather than the LCD model used in PC Gamer’s display comparison, so it is not a like-for-like hardware repeat. If you play with higher brightness, wireless accessories, a different frame target or a more complex scene, your result can be outside both published figures.

- Charge both systems fully and update the game and system software.
- Use the same display brightness percentage and disable automatic brightness changes.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth unless you need them for the test.
- Load the same save in a demanding area and follow the same route or camera position.
- Record the time from unplugging to the low-battery warning, not merely until the screen first dims.
- Repeat the run if the result is unexpectedly different; one scene is not a complete battery profile.
For normal ownership, the useful conclusion is that Switch 2 has a battery advantage in the cited Cyberpunk measurements, while Steam Deck’s runtime depends heavily on the profile you choose. Lowering brightness and selecting a less demanding preset can extend either device’s session.

Switch 2’s panel is both larger and much higher resolution than the compared Steam Deck LCD. That matters in Cyberpunk because the interface contains small map labels, quest text and dense environmental detail. Its 120Hz refresh capability and handheld VRR can also make variable frame delivery look smoother, although they do not create extra game frames.
Steam Deck OLED is a different display proposition. Digital Foundry’s summary notes stronger color and contrast on the OLED model, while Switch 2 provides more pixels and a larger image area. If your priority is black levels and punchier color, OLED may be more appealing; if your priority is fine detail and text clarity, Switch 2’s resolution advantage is the more relevant specification.

Why Switch 2 feels more like a console
Switch 2 boots into a console-focused interface, and the Cyberpunk port is built for a known hardware target. You select the game, choose handheld or docked play and use the included Joy-Con controllers without managing desktop drivers or compatibility layers. Detachable controllers make it easy to change grip or play on a TV, and the mouse-like Joy-Con mode adds an alternate pointing method for supported interactions.

This simplicity is valuable if the device will be shared, if you want to suspend and resume quickly, or if you do not want to troubleshoot graphics profiles. It also limits your choices: you are using the modes and patches provided for the Switch 2 release rather than the full range of PC configuration tools.
Why Steam Deck feels more like a PC
Steam Deck provides trackpads, desktop mode, overlays and extensive settings access. You can select a different control layout, set per-game performance behavior, change launch options and use PC utilities alongside the game. That makes the Deck attractive to players who already maintain a Steam backlog or who enjoy tuning games until they find a preferred frame-time and image-quality balance.
The trade-off is responsibility. A mod may need a particular loader, a community fix may stop working after an update, and a change made in desktop mode can affect the next gaming session. The Deck’s broader software compatibility is a genuine advantage, but it is not the same as a guaranteed console experience for every title.

On Steam Deck, your purchase is a PC version delivered through Steam. You gain the normal PC ecosystem around that copy, including community settings and modding possibilities, but the exact setup can vary with Proton, game updates and the tools you choose. No universal download size or current Steam price is established, so those details should be checked on the live store listing before buying.
How long does Cyberpunk 2077 last on Switch 2?
There are two different questions hidden in “how long does it last.” If you mean battery life, the published Switch 2 Cyberpunk tests recorded about 2 hours 15 minutes under PC Gamer’s demanding, maximum-brightness conditions and 2 hours 40 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s separate January 2026 test. Those are device-runtime measurements, not the length of the game.
If you mean campaign length, the supplied evidence does not establish a single reliable number. Play time changes with difficulty, side jobs, exploration, reloads and whether you complete Phantom Liberty. It would be misleading to present one figure as a guaranteed Switch 2 completion time when the port contains the same broad game package but individual play styles differ.

Choose Switch 2 when these are your priorities
- You want the least configuration before playing.
- You care about sharper handheld text and a larger, higher-resolution screen.
- You regularly move between handheld and TV play.
- You prefer detachable controllers and a console-style suspend-and-resume flow.
- You want a physical Ultimate Edition cartridge that includes Phantom Liberty and does not require an initial download, as reported by TechRadar.
- You value the longer battery results reported in the cited Cyberpunk tests.
Choose Steam Deck when these are your priorities
