Cyberpunk 2077 can feel like “John Wick meets Blade Runner” when you combine its mercenary action with Night City’s technology-obsessed, body-modified future. The comparison is shorthand, not an official crossover: Cyberpunk 2077 is an interactive open-world action-adventure RPG, while John Wick is a film franchise. Their clearest verified connection is actor Keanu Reeves, who plays Johnny Silverhand in the game and stars in the John Wick series.
What the comparison gets right
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG in which you play V, a mercenary trying to build a reputation in Night City. The publisher’s own wording calls Night City “a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour, and body modification.” That combination supplies the two halves of the comparison: a hired operator pulled into violent jobs, and a dense futuristic city where technology changes bodies, identities and social power.
The game is not a film with one fixed sequence of shootouts. You decide how V approaches missions, and those decisions can change the story and the people around the character. A playthrough can emphasize firearms and aggressive movement, ranged attacks, hacking or stealth. Skills, upgradeable weapons and implants let you build a version of V that plays very differently from another player’s character.

CD PROJEKT RED summarizes that agency directly: “The choices you make shape the story and the people around you.” That is why the John Wick comparison works best as a description of tone and play possibilities rather than a claim that every player receives the same cinematic action experience.

Where John Wick actually fits
Keanu Reeves is the real connection
Keanu Reeves voices and portrays Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED also lists Reeves’ John Wick series credit. This is a casting connection, not a shared-universe connection: Johnny Silverhand is not John Wick, and Cyberpunk 2077 is not a John Wick adaptation.
Reeves’ presence makes the analogy immediately legible to movie audiences. Johnny is a major figure in V’s story, but the game’s premise remains centered on the player-controlled mercenary and the choices made in Night City.
Action is a choice, not a guarantee
Cyberpunk 2077 supports the kind of direct gunplay that may remind viewers of an action film, but it also supports quieter solutions. You can attack from range, use hacking and cybernetic abilities, or attempt stealth. Character development and equipment upgrades determine what those approaches can do.

That flexibility is a fundamental difference from a choreographed film. A John Wick movie presents a selected performance; Cyberpunk 2077 gives you systems and asks you to decide how V survives each encounter.
Why Blade Runner is the other half of the shorthand
“Blade Runner” signals the comparison’s cyberpunk-cinema side: a future city shaped by advanced technology, corporate or institutional power, artificial enhancement and difficult questions about identity. The official Cyberpunk 2077 description supports the narrower, reader-facing point that Night City is consumed by power, glamour and body modification.
That should not be expanded into a claim that the game shares Blade Runner continuity or that a particular plot, character or production element was directly copied. The useful point is visual and thematic shorthand: Night City is a neon-heavy megacity where technology is inseparable from status, violence and the body.

How the game’s story turns the premise into a crisis
V’s central situation is more than routine mercenary work. The main setup involves a high-stakes implant that holds the key to immortality. According to the official game page, the implant causes Johnny Silverhand to slowly overwrite V’s personality. That conflict gives the action a personal deadline: missions, alliances and upgrades are tied to a struggle over who V is becoming.
Because choices affect the story and surrounding characters, the same premise can produce different relationships and outcomes. The game therefore combines an action-driven job structure with a science-fiction identity crisis instead of relying only on spectacle.

Phantom Liberty is an expansion
Phantom Liberty is a separate spy-thriller expansion that takes V to Dogtown. The official product information states that Cyberpunk 2077 is required to play it. Treat it as additional content rather than a replacement for the base game, and verify the edition and platform listing when buying.

Keanu Reeves provides the genuine John Wick recognition factor, while V’s branching choices, hacking and implants make the game fundamentally different from a linear action film. It is a concise way to set expectations for tone and setting—not evidence of a crossover, adaptation or shared continuity.
