The best Cyberpunk 2077 builds begin with a combat loop, not a popular weapon list. Decide whether you want to hack at range, combine quickhacks with melee, slow time and use blades, or absorb incoming fire with heavy close-range attacks. Then invest in the attributes and perk branches that make that loop stronger, select weapons that use those perks, and spend Cyberware Capacity on implants that improve both offense and survival.

There is no objectively best build. Update 2.0 made perks more consequential and equipment more interconnected, so a coherent character usually outperforms a collection of individually strong items that do not share a purpose. The templates below are official developer examples, not measured rankings.

What changed the build system

Update 2.0, released on September 21, 2023, overhauled perks, skills, cyberware and weapons for the base game on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Existing saves could continue, but CD PROJEKT RED recommended a new playthrough because the changes were extensive. The system is still the foundation of current build advice.

The latest relevant patch identified in the official material is Patch 2.31, published September 11, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Mac and Nintendo Switch 2. Its notes focus on AutoDrive and Photo Mode rather than a build-system redesign. That establishes the version context for this guide, but it does not prove that no later patch exists.

Update 2.0 replaced the former skill set with five progression skills:

  • Headhunter
  • Netrunner
  • Shinobi
  • Solo
  • Engineer

The official notes state that these skills are not locked to a matching Attribute and can reach level 60. Attributes still gate the major perk branches, while the skills advance through the associated kinds of play.

Start with the combat loop

Before asking “what attributes should I choose,” describe what you want to do every few seconds in a fight. This prevents a common mistake: putting points into several attractive trees without enough investment to unlock the abilities that make any one of them work.

Hacking from a distance

You remain behind cover, scan targets, queue quickhacks and let RAM management determine your next move. Intelligence is the natural foundation. This route values perks that improve quickhack combinations and RAM recovery, then adds a weapon for enemies who reach you.

Hacking mixed with close combat

You open with a quickhack, then finish the target with a blade, pistol or another close-range weapon. It uses Intelligence as the anchor but deliberately reserves capacity for a second combat language. Choose this if you want the flexibility of a netrunner without spending every encounter at long range.

Time-dilated melee

You activate a Sandevistan, close the distance and defeat several opponents while their reactions are slowed. Reflexes and Technical Ability support the official Bullet-Time Ninja template. Blades are the defining weapon family, although the Reflexes branch can also support submachine guns and assault rifles.

Direct, high-impact pressure

You stay in the danger zone, survive incoming fire and end fights with blunt weapons or shotguns. Body and Technical Ability are the core of the official Savage Slugger Solo example. Defensive investment comes before trying to maximize damage.

Stealth or conventional firearms

Stealth and ranged-gun characters are valid personal variations rather than separate mandatory templates. Start with the distance and detection risk you prefer, then borrow the perk branch and cyberware logic that supports it. The planner lets you test these combinations without spending points in-game.

How attributes and perks fit together

Attributes are not merely small statistical bonuses. In the 2.0 framework, fewer perks have larger effects and can unlock distinct abilities. Put early points into the Attribute that opens your intended branch, reach its meaningful perk threshold, and only then diversify.

Use milestones instead of spreading points evenly

  1. Choose one primary Attribute. Intelligence suits quickhacks, Reflexes suits agile weapon play, Body suits close-range force, and Technical Ability supports cyberware-heavy setups and the Ninja and Solo examples.
  2. Unlock the branch that changes your loop. A perk that adds a new action or resource interaction is generally more important than a minor percentage increase.
  3. Add a supporting Attribute. Pick the second tree that fixes your build’s weakness: survivability for a fragile hacker, cyberware capacity for an implant-dependent fighter, or ranged options for a melee character.
  4. Delay generalist spending. A few points in every tree can leave you below the thresholds that make any tree distinctive.

Perks can be refunded individually for free. The official Update 2.0 notes describe a one-time full Attribute reset for existing playthroughs at that update; do not assume that unlimited Attribute respecs are available under every current rule set.

Three official templates compared

Template Preferred distance Primary loop Attribute emphasis Typical weapons Cyberware dependence
Hack-&-Slash Netrunner Long to close Quickhacks, RAM recovery, then melee or a finishing weapon Intelligence first; commit early points through the Phenom threshold Close-combat option plus a weapon that complements hacking High: RAM, survivability and capacity all matter
Bullet-Time Ninja Close, with optional mid-range Sandevistan time dilation and rapid melee attacks Reflexes and Technical Ability Melee; SMGs or assault rifles if the Reflexes firearm branch is added High: Sandevistan and capacity are central
Savage Slugger Solo Close Absorb pressure, control space and hit hard Body and Technical Ability Blunt weapons and shotguns Moderate to high: defense is established before damage

CD PROJEKT RED presents these as ways to start experimenting, not as a controlled performance ranking. No official win-rate, damage-per-second or head-to-head result establishes one as superior.

Hack-&-Slash Netrunner: build around Intelligence

Attributes and perks

Make Intelligence your first major investment and aim for the Phenom threshold early, as the official breakdown recommends. Select perks that improve quickhack combinations and return or preserve RAM so that hacking remains your primary action rather than an occasional opener.

Weapons

Choose a close-combat option for targets that survive your queue or rush your position. A firearm can fill the same role if you prefer distance, but do not select weapons solely because their individual damage looks attractive; favor those that keep pressure on while your quickhacks recharge.

Cyberware and play pattern

Reserve Capacity for implants that improve RAM-related output, survivability and the defensive problems created by fighting while enemies are still active. Test the build in encounters with several targets: a good netrunner setup should let you transition from one hacked target to the next without an empty RAM bar leaving you helpless.

Bullet-Time Ninja: make Reflexes and Technical Ability work together

Attributes and perks

Reflexes supplies the agile combat identity, while Technical Ability supports the cyberware-intensive setup. The defining decision is whether you commit fully to blades or keep enough Reflexes investment to use the SMG and assault-rifle branches suggested by the developers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weapons

Melee weapons are the core because Sandevistan time dilation creates a window to cross open ground and chain attacks. Add an SMG or assault rifle only when you genuinely want a ranged fallback; doing so is a deliberate variation, not a requirement.

Cyberware and capacity planning

Sandevistan is the signature implant, so capacity planning is part of the build rather than a late-game cleanup task. Install the movement, mitigation and offensive implants that improve the moments when time dilation is unavailable, then check that your capacity reserve can accommodate upgrades as your level rises.

Savage Slugger Solo: survive first, then hit harder

Attributes and perks

Body and Technical Ability underpin the Solo template. The official guide emphasizes early defensive investment. This order matters: a damage perk is less useful if you cannot stay in shotgun range long enough to use it.

Weapons

Blunt weapons and shotguns give the build its close-range impact. Use the blunt option when you need control or sustained contact, and switch to the shotgun when a burst of stopping power is more valuable. Keep both families only if the perk investment supports them; otherwise choose the one you enjoy most.

Cyberware

Prioritize implants that let you remain exposed without collapsing immediately, then add damage enhancers after the defensive core is stable. Technical Ability helps this template carry more and better cyberware, but every implant still competes for Capacity.

Cyberware determines both offense and defense

CD PROJEKT RED described the design goal this way: “First of all, we want to treat cyberware as part of your build — specific gear that supports and enhances your playstyle and gameplay.” That principle is practical: choose implants because they reinforce your loop, not because every empty slot should be filled.

  • Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality

Cyberware Capacity

Cyberware Capacity limits how much cyberware you can equip and increases as your character levels. The Edgerunner perk permits a limited amount of over-capacity installation at a health cost. Other items and a cyberware type can also affect capacity, so read the current in-game description before assuming that a particular bonus is permanent or universal.

Attuned Attributes

Implants are attuned to Attributes. A higher value in the relevant Attribute improves the implant’s stat bonus, which means the same cyberware can perform differently in two characters. This is another reason to align Attributes with equipment instead of treating perks and implants as separate systems.

Armor and clothing

After the overhaul, armor comes primarily from cyberware. Most clothing is cosmetic, with limited exceptions such as bulletproof vests. A jacket that looks appropriate for a build is not automatically a defensive upgrade; inspect its actual effect before sacrificing a useful implant slot or capacity budget.

Choosing weapons and understanding loot

Ask “what weapons go with this build?” only after identifying the perk branch they will use. A netrunner’s backup weapon should cover the moments when hacking is unavailable. A Ninja’s weapon should exploit the Sandevistan window. A Solo’s shotgun or blunt weapon should benefit from the Body and defensive investment.

Update 2.0 made weapon and loot tiers scale with level. The official notes also state that, apart from cyberware, only Iconic weapons can be upgraded. Exact item balance can change with later patches, so treat a weapon’s current tier and perk interactions as version-sensitive. Keep an Iconic weapon that fits your loop rather than replacing it automatically when a higher displayed number appears.

Use the Build Planner before committing

CD PROJEKT RED’s free browser Build Planner includes the base-game trees and, when applicable, Phantom Liberty’s Relic tree. The announcement explains its purpose: “With so many new ways to build your character, we wanted players to experiment with their attributes and perk points without the need to commit to it in-game.”

  1. Write down your primary loop and the weapon family you expect to use most.
  2. Select the primary Attribute and unlock the perk that changes how that loop works.
  3. Add the supporting Attribute, then check whether your planned cyberware fits the projected Capacity.
  4. Spend remaining points on survivability or a genuine fallback instead of opening unrelated branches.
  5. Compare two versions of the same concept: for example, a melee-first netrunner and a hack-first netrunner.

The planner is a planning aid, not proof that a build performs best in every encounter. Use it to identify conflicts before you spend in a live save.

Base game and Phantom Liberty progression

The base game contains the core Attribute, perk, weapon and cyberware system. Phantom Liberty is not required to use that framework. If you own the expansion, its Relic tree appears alongside the base-game trees in the official planner and adds another layer of specialization. Treat Relic recommendations as expansion content rather than a prerequisite for a base-game character.

When comparing guides, check whether a suggested perk or Relic node belongs to the expansion and whether the guide was written for the same platform and patch family. A build can be coherent without Phantom Liberty, but an expansion guide may assume options you cannot select.

Common build problems and fixes

Your character feels weak despite good gear

You may have spread Attribute points across too many branches. Refund individual perks, restore the primary threshold and test the loop again before replacing every weapon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You run out of RAM or cannot sustain cyberware effects

Reduce secondary offensive perks, add RAM recovery or survivability, and review Capacity. Installing every available implant can create an over-capacity health penalty that undermines the build it was meant to improve.

You die before a melee setup reaches its target

Follow the Solo guide’s ordering principle: establish defense first. For a Ninja, reserve implants and perks for movement and mitigation outside the Sandevistan window, rather than treating time dilation as permanent protection.

Your clothing looks armored but provides little protection

Check cyberware instead of appearance. Most clothing is cosmetic after Update 2.0, with limited exceptions including bulletproof vests.

A weapon becomes obsolete after leveling

Weapon tiers scale with level. Re-evaluate non-Iconic drops as your level changes, while remembering that only Iconic weapons can be upgraded apart from cyberware under the cited 2.0 rules.

A practical decision checklist

  • Can you describe your preferred combat loop in one sentence?
  • Which Attribute unlocks the perk branch that makes that loop distinctive?
  • Which weapon family benefits directly from those perks?
  • What happens when your primary resource, cooldown or time-dilation effect is unavailable?
  • Does your planned cyberware fit Capacity without an avoidable health penalty?
  • Are your defensive implants strong enough for the distance at which you fight?
  • Are you using a base-game plan or Phantom Liberty’s additional Relic tree?
  • Have you tested the concept in the Build Planner before spending points?

That process answers “which cyberware should I use?” more reliably than copying a fixed shopping list: use implants that strengthen the actions you perform most, improve the weakness those actions create, and remain compatible with your Attribute attunement and Capacity.

What “best build” means in practice

For one player, the best build is a RAM-efficient netrunner; for another, it is a Sandevistan blade fighter or a shotgun Solo who can hold a doorway. The official examples are useful starting templates because each connects attributes, perks, weapons and cyberware to a recognizable loop. Choose one, alter the secondary branch to match your habits, and let your equipment reinforce that choice rather than replacing it.
