The best beginner plan in Cyberpunk 2077 after Update 2.0 is to commit to one main attribute lane, support it with a second lane, and invest in Technical Ability early enough to use the cyberware your build needs. Do not spread perk points evenly across all five attributes. Choose whether you want to hack, move quickly with blades or automatic weapons, fight up close with shotguns and blunt weapons, or remain hidden with pistols and precision weapons. Then buy efficient perks for that role, upgrade cyberware before cosmetic clothing, and keep manual saves before the game’s few consequential missions.
This guide applies to the post-Update 2.0 systems released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 21, 2023. Update 2.0 rebuilt the perk trees, police, armor and cyberware systems so extensively that CD PROJEKT RED recommended starting a new playthrough. Perks can be redistributed outside combat, which makes experimentation safer, but your attribute points and gear choices still shape your character’s ceiling.
What Update 2.0 changed for a new character
Update 2.0 replaced the old perk-heavy progression with fewer, more consequential perks. The five attributes are Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence and Cool. Each is a broad playstyle lane rather than a class that locks you into one job.

- Body: health, stamina, shotguns and blunt-force survivability.
- Reflexes: mobility, blades and fast firearms.
- Technical Ability: cyberware capacity, tech weapons and perks that improve your implant limit.
- Intelligence: cyberdecks, RAM, quickhacks and smart weapons.
- Cool: stealth, headshots, pistols and deliberate precision play.
Armor is now concentrated in cyberware rather than clothing. Clothing is therefore mostly a style decision after 2.0, while your Cyberware Capacity and Technical Ability determine how many implants you can equip and how high your defensive and offensive ceiling can rise. The Edgerunner perk can let you exceed your normal capacity, but it does so at a health cost.

The practical consequence is simple: choose one primary lane and one supporting lane, purchase the efficient early perks in those trees, and deepen them as you learn which weapons and abilities you actually use. A level-20 character that has bought shallow perks in all five trees is usually weaker than one focused character, even if the spread-out character has more options on paper.
Choose a build by combat loop, not by a “best class”
There is no objectively best beginner build in the official material. The redesigned system is meant to support experimentation, and the right choice depends on how you want each fight to feel. Use this comparison before spending your first major batch of perk points.
| Build lane | Combat distance | Primary weapons | Resource loop | Survivability | Cyberware demand | Attribute focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netrunner / smart-weapon hybrid | Long to medium range; can become aggressive during Overclock | Quickhacks, smart weapons, Monowire | RAM regeneration, queues and Overclock | Moderate until Body is added; improves with Adrenaline Rush | High; cyberdeck, Monowire and related implants compete for capacity | Intelligence primary; Body and Technical Ability support |
| Reflex blade or fast-gun build | Close to medium range with constant movement | Blades, assault weapons, submachine guns or other fast firearms | Stamina, movement and weapon-specific perk effects | Moderate; mobility is your first defense | Moderate to high; Technical Ability prevents capacity from becoming the bottleneck | Reflexes primary; Technical Ability support |
| Body shotgun or brawler | Close range | Shotguns, blunt weapons and other heavy-hitting options | Health, stamina and sustained point-blank damage | High; the most forgiving lane for mistakes | Moderate; add Technical Ability for more defensive implants | Body primary; Technical Ability support |
| Cool stealth and precision | Long to medium range, from concealment | Pistols and precision weapons | Stealth, headshots and controlled engagements | Low if discovered; improves when paired with Body or Technical Ability | Moderate; choose implants that preserve stealth or precision | Cool primary; Body or Technical Ability support |
How to spend attributes and perks
Use a primary and a supporting attribute
Put early attribute points into the tree that directly improves the weapons or abilities you already enjoy. Use the second tree to solve a weakness: Technical Ability is the usual support choice because Cyberware Capacity affects every build, while Body supplies a forgiving health and stamina buffer. This two-lane approach gives you a coherent combat loop without removing room to experiment.
The Tool Desk

Read the effect of each perk rather than buying a whole tree because its name sounds appropriate. A mobility build should take the movement and weapon branch it actually uses; a stealth player should take the pistol, precision or concealment branch that matches the chosen weapon. Perk redistribution works outside combat, so you can remove a point from an experiment and place it elsewhere before the next encounter. That flexibility is a reason to test a perk for several fights instead of trying to plan every level in advance.
Do not ignore Technical Ability
Technical Ability is not only a tech-weapon attribute. It raises the practical build ceiling by improving Cyberware Capacity and unlocking capacity-related perks. Because nearly all armor moved from clothing to cyberware, a character that ignores Technical Ability can run out of implant space even when the weapon tree is strong. You do not have to make Technical Ability your primary attribute, but most long-term builds benefit from treating it as a deliberate support investment.
Four reliable starting builds
Netrunner and smart-weapon hybrid
The official Hack-&-Slash Netrunner progression begins in Intelligence. It is a good choice if you want to solve encounters remotely, then switch to an aggressive Monowire or smart-weapon finish when enemies close in.
- Take Optimization first to improve RAM regeneration.
- Move into Hack Queue so you can prepare multiple quickhacks efficiently.
- Take Data Recycler to improve the value you get from completed hack sequences.
- Return to the middle Intelligence branch for Overclock, which lets you push beyond a normal RAM-only rhythm at a health cost.
- Later, add Body’s Adrenaline Rush for an overshield that makes aggressive Monowire play safer.
The official build article identifies Militech Paraline, the starting cyberdeck, as a flexible option because it supports Monowire and smart weapons while using relatively little Cyberware Capacity. Keep enough capacity available for the deck, Monowire and defensive implants; a netrunner that spends every slot on damage can be fragile when hacking no longer controls the room.

Reflex blade or fast-firearm build
Choose Reflexes if movement is part of the fun for you. Spend perks on the blade or fast-firearm family you actually carry, then use mobility to control distance and break enemy aim. Do not buy every Reflexes branch simply because it is available: a blade-focused character and a submachine-gun character share the attribute but not necessarily the same efficient perks.
Keep Technical Ability as your support investment. Reflexes gives you speed and weapon specialization; Technical Ability lets you install enough cyberware to survive the fights where speed alone fails. This is a role-based recommendation, not a published ranking of one “correct” Reflexes allocation.
Body shotgun or brawler build
Body is the easiest lane for a player who would rather recover from a mistake than reload a save. Health and stamina support close-range fighting, while shotguns and blunt weapons reward committing to an enemy instead of trading small amounts of damage from cover.
Pair Body with enough Technical Ability to support defensive cyberware. Pick implants that improve survival and close-range uptime rather than spending early money on cosmetic clothing. The build is forgiving, but it still needs a plan for ranged enemies: use cover to close the distance, then let your health and stamina advantages matter.
Cool stealth and precision build
Cool suits players who want to choose the first target, land headshots and avoid a prolonged firefight. Invest in the pistol, precision and stealth perks you actually use. If an encounter turns loud, a Cool-only character can be less forgiving than a Body build, so add Body for a health buffer or Technical Ability for cyberware-based defenses rather than buying thin perks in every attribute.
Stealth is a resource loop of its own: patience, line of sight and target selection replace the RAM or stamina management that defines other builds. A precision weapon is strongest when you can preserve that control, not when you rush into every room.
Your first hours: a practical progression route
- Finish the prologue and the first Ripperdoc mission. Treat Watson as a low-risk tutorial area where you can test your chosen weapon, quickhacks and movement before committing to difficult side content.
- Sell surplus weapons and junk at drop points. Use the money for cyberware and an operating system that supports your lane. Since clothing is mostly cosmetic after Update 2.0, do not make expensive clothing purchases your early priority.
- Check your Cyberware Capacity whenever you level. A new implant is useful only if you can equip it without displacing a more important piece. Technical Ability and capacity-related perks become increasingly valuable as your build matures.
- Manually save before major missions and dialogue decisions. At minimum, create a separate save before The Pickup and The Heist, and keep a save before any branch you are unsure about.
- Use perk redistribution outside combat. Try a new perk in several encounters, then move the point if the effect does not match your weapon or resource loop. This is safer than treating the first allocation as permanent.
- Track Street Cred separately from character level. Character level improves attributes, perks and gear access. Street Cred unlocks fixer work, vendors and discounts. Raising one bar does not automatically raise the other.
Early choices that can be missed or changed only with a save
The Pickup
The guide identifies The Pickup as a mission worth saving before. Its mission state and dialogue decisions can alter how the encounter develops, so keep a manual save rather than relying on an autosave that may already have crossed a branch.

The Heist and Jackie’s body
Save before The Heist and pay attention to the choice involving Jackie’s body. The outcome is consequential, and a later replay is much easier when you have a pre-mission save instead of restarting the entire game.
Konpeki Plaza loot
Konpeki Plaza is effectively a one-time visit. Before leaving, search for the unique items Satori, Kongou and the Iguana Egg. If you leave without collecting them, do not assume the area will remain available for a normal return trip.
Nocturne Op55N1 and the point of no return
The elevator in Nocturne Op55N1 is the base game’s point of no return until the credits. Clear the side content you care about before entering it. After an ending, the game reloads you before that decision, but the pre-elevator save is still the cleanest way to postpone the finale while preserving your chosen build and inventory state.
Cyberware, money and survivability after level 2.0
Think of cyberware as your armor, build multiplier and capacity budget at the same time. A weapon tree tells you how to deal damage; implants determine how often you can survive the return fire and how many complementary systems you can run.
- Budget capacity deliberately: reserve room for the operating system, your signature weapon implant such as Monowire, and defensive pieces before filling every remaining slot with minor bonuses.
- Use Edgerunner knowingly: it can exceed your normal Cyberware Capacity, but the health cost changes the survivability calculation. It is a power ceiling, not a free upgrade.
- Buy function before fashion: clothing no longer supplies the bulk of armor, so early funds are better directed toward cyberware and an operating system.
- Match implants to your loop: a netrunner needs RAM and deck support; a Body build needs health and close-range resilience; a Cool build needs stealth or precision support; a Reflexes build needs mobility and enough defense to survive when movement fails.
Ripperdocs are therefore progression checkpoints, not merely cosmetic vendors. Revisit them after major attribute or perk milestones and compare a new implant’s capacity cost with the actual benefit to your chosen lane.
When to start Phantom Liberty
In a normal first playthrough, start Phantom Liberty after the base-game Transmission mission and around level 15–20. That timing gives you enough tools to understand your build before entering Dogtown while still leaving substantial room for the expansion’s progression.
Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown, the Relic tree and new gear. Owners also raise the level cap from 50 to 60 and receive 10 additional attribute points plus 10 additional perk points. Those points expand an established build; they do not remove the value of choosing a coherent primary lane early.

Relic points are a separate progression system
Relic points do not come from ordinary leveling. The guide reports 15 available points in total: six awarded through the expansion’s story and nine found at Militech Data Terminals. Relic points can be reassigned, so you can test a Relic branch and move the points when your preferred combat loop changes.
Use saves before Phantom Liberty branches
Phantom Liberty choices can affect endings. Make a manual save before major branch missions, especially when a decision changes which characters, missions or outcomes remain available. The expansion’s flexibility is useful, but it does not make every narrative choice reversible without a prior save.

If your character feels weak, diagnose the mismatch
You spread points across all five attributes
Stop buying shallow perks and choose one primary lane. Keep the perks that directly support your weapon or hacking loop, redistribute inefficient perks outside combat, and use the next attribute points to deepen that lane.
Your damage is fine but you die quickly
Check Cyberware Capacity before replacing your weapon. Add Technical Ability or capacity-related perks, then install defensive cyberware that fits your resource loop. A clothing upgrade will not solve the post-2.0 armor problem because most armor now comes from implants.
Your cyberdeck or signature implant will not fit
Remove low-impact implants, inspect capacity-related Technical Ability perks and reconsider Edgerunner only if you can absorb its health cost. Capacity is a build constraint, not a temporary inventory problem.
You run out of resources mid-fight
Match the remedy to the lane: Intelligence builds need a reliable RAM regeneration and queue rhythm; Body builds need stamina and health management; Reflexes builds need movement that prevents unnecessary trades; Cool builds need to restore stealth control instead of forcing a prolonged firefight.

You missed a unique early item
Reload the manual save made before The Heist or accept that the item is unavailable on the current path. Konpeki Plaza should be searched completely before departure because the visit is effectively one-time.
A compact decision checklist
- Pick one primary attribute: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence or Cool.
- Choose one support attribute, usually Technical Ability or Body.
- Use a weapon and resource loop that matches the perks you buy.
- Check Cyberware Capacity before spending money on another implant.
- Keep clothing purchases cosmetic until your cyberware and operating system are covered.
- Save before The Pickup, The Heist, Konpeki Plaza’s departure and Nocturne Op55N1’s elevator.
- Start Phantom Liberty after Transmission at roughly level 15–20 unless you deliberately use Skip Ahead.
- Keep manual saves before major Phantom Liberty branches because choices can affect endings.
The Skip Ahead option is available for players who want to enter Phantom Liberty immediately with a preset character. It is convenient for a focused expansion run, but a first-time player generally gets more from learning the core systems in Watson and the base game before entering Dogtown.
