The best beginner build in Cyberpunk 2077 is not a universal skill tree. It is a coherent loop you can execute comfortably: choose how you want to fight, spend attributes and perks on that approach, then make your operating system, weapons and cyberware reinforce it. A direct gunfighter, mobile blade user, stealth infiltrator and netrunner can all be strong when their parts work together.
This guide targets the redesigned systems introduced in Update 2.0 and the clarifications made in Update 2.1. Update 2.0 launched on September 21, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, replacing older perk, cyberware, vehicle-combat and police-system assumptions. Phantom Liberty owners also have the Relic progression tree and Dogtown to account for.
Choose a combat loop before you choose a build
Cyberpunk 2077 gives you enough flexibility to change direction, so copying a level-by-level “perfect” build is unnecessary for a first playthrough. Decide what you want to do repeatedly in a fight, then select upgrades that make that action safer, faster or more powerful. The official CD PROJEKT RED Build Planner displays the current base-game perk trees and, for Phantom Liberty owners, the Relic tree.

| Beginner direction | What you do most often | What to prioritize | Useful fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct combat | Take space, use firearms and finish enemies at close or medium range. | The attribute and perk branch for your preferred weapon family, plus survivability cyberware. | A second weapon with a different range or damage profile. |
| Blade and mobility | Close distance quickly, evade, and attack with blades. | Reflexes-oriented movement and blade perks, then implants that improve speed and staying power. | A firearm for exposed targets or enemies that punish melee. |
| Stealth | Control detection, isolate targets and end encounters before alarms spread. | Hacking and detection-control tools, with perks that reward patient positioning. | A dependable close-range weapon when stealth fails. |
| Netrunner | Scan, queue quickhacks and use the environment or connected devices to weaken groups. | Intelligence and quickhack-related perks, an operating system that supports the loop, and enough health or armor to survive discovery. | A conventional weapon for targets that resist or outlast your hacks. |
These are starting frameworks, not promises of objectively higher damage. No authoritative source publishes a universal beginner success rate, DPS ranking or single “best build.” The practical test is whether you can open an encounter, survive its counterattack and finish it without abandoning your plan.

Spend attributes and perks without locking yourself in
1. Pick one primary branch
Put early attribute and perk points into the branch that improves your chosen weapon or hacking loop. A character who wants to fight with blades should not divide every point among unrelated gun, stealth and quickhack bonuses during the opening hours. Focus creates noticeable improvements sooner and makes it easier to understand why an upgrade helped.
2. Add one support branch
After your main loop feels reliable, add a support branch for its most common weakness. A close-range fighter may need mobility or durability; a stealth character may need a loud fallback; a netrunner may need survivability for the moment an enemy reaches them. Support spending should solve a problem you have actually encountered, not fill empty slots.
3. Read the whole perk effect
Update 2.0 redesigned the skill trees. Do not assume that a pre-2.0 guide’s location, cost or effect still applies. Read prerequisites, resource changes and activation conditions in the current menu, and try a new perk in a low-risk activity before committing further points around it.

5. Reassess after several missions
Your first hours are a tutorial for your own preferences. If you discover that you enjoy quickhacks more than rifles, or blades more than pistols, move the next points toward that loop rather than protecting an earlier choice. The game supports experimentation; a comfortable build is more valuable than a theoretically optimal one you cannot execute.
How cyberware works after Update 2.0
Cyberware is a core build layer, not cosmetic decoration. CD PROJEKT RED describes implants as gear that supports and enhances a playstyle, and your character has a limit on how much cyberware can be equipped. That capacity makes every slot and upgrade an opportunity cost.
Buy for synergy, not for a full list of implants
Start with cyberware that directly improves your combat loop. A mobility-and-blade character benefits more from movement or survivability effects than from an unrelated hacking bonus. A netrunner should favor implants and an operating system that help scanning, quickhack use or recovery. A direct-combat character can prioritize defenses and the resource that their weapons consume. Leave capacity open when no available implant clearly helps; an empty slot is better than spending money on a mismatch.
Use ripperdocs as build checkpoints
Visit ripperdocs when you gain levels, change your main weapon or begin dying to a specific threat. Compare the implant’s effect with your actual behavior, check its capacity cost, and keep enough currency for a replacement if the result does not fit. Because Update 2.0 changed cyberware and its relationship to builds, an older shopping list may recommend effects or limits that no longer exist.

| Decision | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Does it enable the loop I use most: quickhacks, reflex-based combat or another core approach? |
| Capacity | Will this implant’s benefit matter in nearly every encounter, or is it a narrow bonus? |
| Survivability | What usually ends the fight: burst damage, being surrounded, detection or running out of a resource? |
| Upgrade timing | Am I replacing a weak implant because my needs changed, or buying something merely because a slot is empty? |
A repeatable combat routine for new players
Do not stand in the open and trade damage. Update 2.0’s perks, cyberware and vehicle systems reward active movement and preparation, but the fundamentals remain manageable if you follow the same opening sequence.
- Scan before committing. Identify enemies, cameras, turrets, explosive objects, cover and alternate routes. A few seconds of information can prevent an alarm or an unwinnable crossfire.
- Choose the first target. Remove a lookout, disable a camera or isolate the enemy who can force you out of cover. Your first action should support the rest of your loop rather than scatter damage everywhere.
- Bypass defenses when possible. Use quickhacks, stealth routes, doors, vertical paths or environmental interactions to reduce the number of threats before the main exchange.
- Commit to your primary tool. Use the weapon, blade or quickhack sequence your perks and cyberware support. Switching constantly between unrelated tools makes resource and timing effects harder to read.
- Keep moving between cover. Change angle after an attack, use elevation and avoid staying in one predictable lane. Mobility is especially important for melee characters, while a netrunner needs distance and line-of-sight breaks after initiating hacks.
- Heal before the emergency. Treat healing as part of your rotation, not a last-second rescue. Refill or recover when you have cover so an interruption does not leave you at critical health.
- Use grenades and the environment deliberately. Throw a grenade to split a group, force movement or create an opening rather than tossing every charge immediately.
- Keep a backup weapon. Carry a tool for a different range or situation. An enemy who resists your primary method should be an inconvenience, not a hard stop.
Set difficulty as a learning control
Lower difficulty is a sensible starting point while you learn recoil, stamina, healing timing, quickhack queues and the effects of your cyberware. Raise it after your attributes, perks, operating system and equipment feel coherent. Difficulty is a practice setting, not a verdict on your build or your skill.
What to do first in Night City
Night City rewards a deliberate mixture of story and optional work. Quests, gigs, hustles, NCPD activities, cyberpsychos, loot and vendors provide money, equipment and repetition of the combat situations you are learning. The official Cyberpunk 2077 Complete Official Guide covers main jobs, side jobs, gigs, cyberpsychos and hustles with annotated maps and screenshots, which makes it useful when you want a route rather than another build list.
A practical opening route
- Complete the opening story beats until the city opens up. Use these missions to test your preferred weapon and learn scanning, cover, inventory and healing before buying expensive upgrades.
- Alternate a main job with nearby optional work. After a major story mission, clear a few gigs or NCPD markers in the same district. This keeps travel efficient while supplying cash, gear and combat practice.
- Investigate cyberpsychos when your loadout is stable. These encounters are useful tests of positioning and restraint. If one overwhelms you, return later instead of spending every resource trying to force it.
- Read shards when they clarify a location or objective. They add context and can reveal information relevant to a mission. You do not need to read every entry immediately to progress.
- Check vendors and ripperdocs as you level. Compare new weapons, clothing or implants with the loop you are actually using. Sell or dismantle equipment that does not support it, subject to your preferred crafting and inventory habits.
- Use fast travel selectively. It saves time between distant objectives, but walking or driving occasionally exposes vertical routes, environmental encounters and activities that a marker-to-marker sprint skips.
Why exploration improves a build
Optional activities are not just sightseeing. They give you opportunities to practice against different enemy layouts, earn money for cyberware, find weapons that change your preferred range and discover upgrade opportunities. Mixing activities also prevents the main story from pushing you into a difficult mission with an untested loadout.

Phantom Liberty and the Relic tree
Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown and a separate Relic progression layer. If you own the expansion, include Relic choices in your build plan rather than treating them as unrelated bonuses. The official Build Planner shows the additional tree alongside the redesigned base-game trees.
If you do not own Phantom Liberty, the base game still provides the Update 2.0 perk and cyberware systems; simply plan with the base-game branches. Do not follow an expansion-only recommendation when the required tree or area is unavailable.
Should you buy the base game or Ultimate Edition?
For a new player who wants the complete current package, CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition as combining the base game with Phantom Liberty and including the major free updates. It was announced for release on December 5, 2023. Digital and physical availability varies by platform and market, so verify the store listing for your region before purchasing.
| Option | What you receive | Who it suits | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base game | Cyberpunk 2077 with the free updates available for your platform. | Players who want the main Night City campaign or want to add Phantom Liberty later. | Confirm that your platform is PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S for the Update 2.0-era systems described here. |
| Ultimate Edition | The base game plus Phantom Liberty and the major free updates. | New players who want Dogtown and the Relic tree in the same purchase. | Check whether the edition is digital or physical, the included platform, and regional availability. |
Physical-edition contents
Bandai Namco’s official product information lists physical-edition materials such as game media or a code, a world compendium, a Night City map, postcards and stickers. Contents can vary by market and platform, so treat the retailer’s regional listing as final.
Using a printed guide without following outdated mechanics
The printed Cyberpunk 2077 Complete Official Guide is useful for maps, quest routes and a broad reference to character development and gameplay. Simon & Schuster lists a US$24.99 list price for the standard edition and US$39.99 for the Collector’s Edition; retailer prices may differ. The guide predates later patches, so use it primarily for navigation, quest context and location coverage. For perk effects, cyberware capacity, police behavior and other volatile mechanics, trust the current in-game descriptions and patch notes instead.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every encounter feels expensive and slow. | Attributes, perks, operating system and weapons are serving different loops. | Choose one primary method, redirect upcoming points to it and replace only the cyberware that conflicts with it. |
| You die before your hacks or melee attacks matter. | No plan for the moment enemies close in. | Add a reliable fallback weapon, use cover and movement, and reserve a cyberware slot or perk choice for survivability. |
| Stealth collapses immediately. | Cameras, patrol routes or the first target were ignored. | Scan first, disable or bypass defenses, isolate a lookout and keep a loud fallback ready. |
| You run out of money after one shopping trip. | Currency was spread across unrelated implants or weapons. | Pause purchases until a new item clearly improves your main loop; fund upgrades through nearby gigs and map activities. |
| An old online build does not match your menus. | The advice predates Update 2.0 or was not revised for Update 2.1. | Check the patch label and rebuild from the current in-game tree or official planner. |
| A mission feels far above your ability. | You rushed the main path without optional practice or equipment upgrades. | Leave, complete nearby gigs or NCPD activities, improve the loadout and return with a tested opening routine. |
A simple first-session checklist
- Choose direct combat, blades and mobility, stealth or netrunning as your initial loop.
- Spend early points in one matching attribute and perk branch.
- Equip an operating system and cyberware that reinforce that loop; do not fill capacity with unrelated effects.
- Scan every new combat area and identify cameras, cover and a first target.
- Carry a backup weapon for a different range or resistant enemy.
- Alternate story missions with nearby gigs, NCPD activities or other map markers.
- Use lower difficulty while learning recoil, stamina, healing, quickhack queues and cyberware effects.
- Revisit your plan after several missions and use the official Build Planner before a major reset.
- If you own Phantom Liberty, include the Relic tree and Dogtown in your progression plan.
- Check edition, platform and region details before buying the Ultimate Edition or a physical copy.
Keep advice patch-aware
Update 2.0 changed skill trees, perks, cyberware, vehicle combat, car chases and the police system; Update 2.1 subsequently clarified or changed some systems. When a guide gives a precise perk effect, capacity value or progression interaction, check its patch date. The durable advice is structural: build around a playstyle, spend capacity on synergy, prepare before combat and mix story missions with exploration. The exact numbers and menu behavior belong to the version you are playing.
