Cyberpunk 2 is still in preproduction, but its creative direction is no longer a fixed concept from one director. CD PROJEKT RED says the former Project Orion completed its conceptual phase and entered preproduction on 28 May 2025. The Boston-led team is now testing ideas, reassessing Cyberpunk 2077, and using a shared, agile process to decide what belongs in the sequel.
What Cyberpunk 2’s status actually is
CD PROJEKT RED publicly renamed Project Orion as Cyberpunk 2 when it announced the project’s move into preproduction on 28 May 2025. The company’s 2025 annual report also listed the game as in development on 31 December 2025.
“Preproduction” means the team has moved beyond a purely conceptual pitch, but it does not mean the game is feature-complete or close to launch. Core creative and technical decisions are still being tested. CD PROJEKT RED has not announced a release date, final platform list, plot summary, gameplay reveal, or complete feature list.

Who is directing the sequel?
Gabe Amatangelo: game direction
Gabe Amatangelo is the project’s vice president and game director. He previously led Cyberpunk 2077’s major post-launch work, including Phantom Liberty, and is responsible for the overall game direction and production of the sequel.

Igor Sarzyński: creative direction
Igor Sarzyński is creative director, overseeing narrative, world-building and lore. The North American group also includes Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty veterans such as Paweł Sasko, giving the sequel continuity with the earlier game while expanding the leadership base.
A larger Boston-led team
In an October 2026 feature, CD PROJEKT RED said that more than 180 developers were working on Cyberpunk 2. That is a company-reported headcount, not an independently audited staffing figure. It does show that the sequel is being shaped by a sizable, cross-disciplinary organization rather than by a single creative voice.

Why the original vision is changing
The sequel’s leaders describe development as an active process of testing assumptions instead of protecting an early pitch. Sarzyński said the team is “evaluating the previous game,” discussing what it liked, identifying ideas with more potential, and deciding which elements “didn’t pan out” or no longer justify the team’s time.

Amatangelo describes the same culture as continual challenge and iteration. “We’re always wanting to do more,” he said, characterizing that impulse as part of CD PROJEKT RED’s development culture. In practice, the directors’ comments point to a feedback loop: write down a vision, test it with other disciplines, reassess the result, and revise priorities.
How the team decides what survives
Cross-discipline feedback
Narrative, world-building, design and production are being discussed together rather than finalized in isolation. A story idea must fit the world and the playable experience; a system must justify its implementation cost and support the game’s intended tone.

An agile priority backlog
The production process uses an agile backlog that ranks work against available time and resources. This makes the sequel’s direction deliberately adjustable. If testing shows that an element is weak, too expensive or less valuable than another opportunity, it can be lowered in priority before large amounts of production work are committed.
Lessons from Cyberpunk 2077
The directors are explicitly using the previous game as material for evaluation. Their comments support a careful reassessment of what worked and what had unrealized potential, but they do not identify a final list of returning or removed mechanics. Any claim that a particular vehicle system, character, district or feature is confirmed for Cyberpunk 2 would go beyond what the studio has announced.

Is Cyberpunk 2 bigger than Cyberpunk 2077?
The only published scale figure is the more-than-180-developer headcount for Cyberpunk 2 in CD PROJEKT RED’s October 2026 feature. That does not establish the sequel’s map size, budget, development length, quest count or final commercial scope, and it cannot by itself prove that the game will be “bigger” than Cyberpunk 2077.
What can be said is that the project has a broad leadership structure and a Boston-led North American development presence supported by veterans of the earlier game. The studio’s process is designed to expand or cut ideas as evidence accumulates, so scope remains a production decision rather than a locked promise.
When will Cyberpunk 2 release?
There is no announced release date. CD PROJEKT RED has also not confirmed launch platforms, a public gameplay demonstration or a finalized product specification. Because the game is in preproduction, dates circulating through leaks or speculation should not be treated as official scheduling information.

Will the sequel fix Cyberpunk 2077’s problems?
The honest answer is not yet knowable. The team says it is examining what did and did not work in Cyberpunk 2077, which creates an opportunity to address weaknesses. However, no specific fix has been promised, and no final systems have been shown. The confirmed commitment is to reassessment and iteration, not to a particular technical, design or storytelling solution.
Do not confuse the game with Edgerunners 2
Edgerunners 2 is a separate Netflix anime expansion of the Cyberpunk universe, not the Cyberpunk 2 game. The official listing gives 20 October 2026 as its Netflix date; actual availability and regional rights should be checked in the viewer’s country. Its release does not provide evidence about the game’s launch schedule or features.
