Cybernews’s 2026 roundup names Bluehost its best overall FTP-hosting pick and evaluates providers on performance, features, support, usability, and price-to-quality. Its published test results are short-term observations, not guarantees, and its plan details may have changed. This guide summarizes six providers from the roundup; check the provider’s current plan terms before choosing.
What Cybernews evaluated
Cybernews says its team tested 64 web hosting providers for the roundup. Its stated method included uptime monitoring, response-time observations, and stress tests with 50 virtual users. The monitoring periods were not uniform: the article describes one month of monitoring for Bluehost and two-month assessments for several other providers. These are Cybernews’s reported methods and findings, not independently replicated results.
The article uses “FTP hosting” to mean web hosting that provides server space and access for transferring and managing website files. Typical tasks include uploading site content, making updates, and transferring backups. An FTP client such as FileZilla is software used to connect to a server; it is separate from the hosting service.

FTP, FTPS, and SFTP are different protocols
- FTP is the original File Transfer Protocol. Do not assume that a plain FTP connection encrypts credentials or transferred data.
- FTPS adds SSL/TLS protection to FTP. FTPES is an explicit form of FTPS; the provider and client must support compatible settings.
- SFTP is SSH File Transfer Protocol, a distinct protocol that operates over SSH. It is not simply another name for FTPS.
Before buying a plan, verify which secure protocol it supports, whether that feature is included in the specific plan, and whether you need SSH access or another configuration. The labels are not interchangeable.

Account limits, protocol access, pricing, and other plan terms can change, and the roundup’s comparison table and provider write-ups contain some inconsistencies. Treat the test figures as the publisher’s observations under its stated assessment, not as service-level commitments or a reliable prediction of performance for your site.
How to choose a plan for file transfers
1. Confirm the protocol you need
For credentials and file contents to be protected in transit, verify that your chosen plan supports SFTP or FTPS and that you can configure it in your client. If you specifically need SFTP, FTPS support alone does not meet that requirement. Likewise, a mention of SSH or SFTP in a provider overview does not establish that the feature is available on every plan.

2. Check account limits and access controls
Compare the number of FTP accounts or users permitted by the plan and whether you can restrict each user to a particular directory. Separate accounts can reduce the need to share credentials with collaborators. Confirm how account creation, password changes, and access revocation work in the provider’s current control panel.

FTP access is only one part of file hosting. Check the plan’s storage and bandwidth limits against the size and frequency of your uploads, backups, and downloads. Do not infer unlimited storage or bandwidth from a claim about unlimited FTP accounts; they are different limits.

4. Evaluate the control panel and support path
Consider whether the control panel makes it straightforward to create accounts, set directory access, and find connection details. If you rely on logs or advanced client options, verify where they are available. Compare support channels and documentation for the particular plan rather than relying only on a roundup’s general support label.
5. Compare performance evidence and total cost
Look at the duration and method behind any uptime or response-time figure. A short editorial test is not a long-term guarantee, and response times can vary with site configuration, location, and workload. For price, check both the introductory offer and renewal cost, along with the plan term and any storage or transfer limits that could affect your use.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
Cybernews reports 99.63% uptime for Bluehost over one month and 99.99% uptime for SiteGround over two months, with seven minutes of downtime reported for SiteGround. Those different periods make the figures unsuitable as a direct long-term reliability comparison. The response-time figures are also observations from Cybernews’s assessment, not guaranteed latency for every customer or location.

The 50-virtual-user stress-test figure describes Cybernews’s stated test method. It does not establish that every listed plan will handle 50 visitors under all conditions: the article does not make that a plan guarantee, and real capacity depends on the workload and configuration.
