Cyber resilience is the ability to anticipate threats, withstand disruption, recover quickly and continue operating when incidents occur. For a managed service provider (MSP), that means connecting prevention, detection, response and recovery—not relying on a single security product or assuming an attack can always be blocked.

The seven strategies below are recommendations presented by OpenText in a sponsored CRN article, not a universal standard or independently tested ranking. They offer MSPs a practical framework for advising customers and organizing security services.

1. Why is layered security important?

No single control catches every threat. A customer can combine endpoint protection, email security, DNS protection, multifactor authentication (MFA) and security awareness training so that a failure in one layer does not automatically expose the whole environment.

For an MSP, the practical question is whether those controls cover the customer’s actual users, devices, identities and workloads—and whether alerts and policies are coordinated. CRN’s sponsored article attributes an average $2.2 million lower breach cost to organizations combining multiple security layers, citing IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2024. That figure is an attribution in the CRN article, not evidence that adding layers alone guarantees a particular cost reduction.

2. What happens when prevention fails?

Detection and response determine how quickly a suspicious event is identified, investigated and contained. OpenText’s recommendations include continuous monitoring, managed detection and response (MDR), threat hunting, incident response planning and explicit escalation procedures.

For customers, ask how alerts are triaged, who can authorize containment, when the MSP escalates an incident, and what incident-response support is included. A monitoring service is useful only when someone can assess signals and act on them; the workflow should make responsibilities and handoffs clear before an incident.

OpenText’s September 2022 blog describes its MxDR service for MSPs as involving security analysts, threat hunters, digital forensic investigators and incident responders, alongside a vendor-described virtual SOC and shared ticketing and dashboard experience. These are descriptions of OpenText’s service, not independent comparative findings. The blog also frames MSPs themselves as targets for cyberattacks, a reason to include the provider’s own systems and response process in resilience planning.

3. Why are unpatched vulnerabilities still a problem?

Vulnerability management helps an MSP find weaknesses and direct limited remediation capacity toward those with greater potential impact. OpenText’s recommended practices include vulnerability scanning, patch management, asset discovery, configuration reviews and exposure assessments.

Asset discovery matters because a device or service that is missing from an inventory can also be missed by scanning and patch workflows. Pair discovery with a repeatable process for reviewing findings, assigning owners, prioritizing remediation and tracking closure. The recommendation is to prioritize—not to treat every finding as equally urgent or assume that a scan alone reduces exposure.

4. What role do backups play in cyber resilience?

Backups support recovery after data loss, destructive incidents or other disruption, but merely having backup jobs is not proof that a customer can restore operations. OpenText’s recommendations include automated schedules, immutable backups, air-gapped storage, protection for SaaS applications and recovery validation.

MSPs should verify which workloads and SaaS data are covered, how backup copies are protected from alteration or compromise, and whether restoration has been demonstrated. Tie backup and recovery decisions to documented recovery objectives agreed with the customer; the source recommendations do not specify universal recovery-time or recovery-point targets.

5. Is having a recovery plan enough?

A written plan can be incomplete, outdated or unusable under pressure. OpenText recommends exercising recovery and continuity procedures through disaster recovery tests, backup restoration exercises, tabletop simulations, incident response drills and business continuity reviews.

  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Choose exercises that test different parts of the process. A restoration exercise checks whether data can be recovered; a tabletop can expose unclear decisions, contact paths or escalation responsibilities without simulating a full technical outage. Record gaps, assign owners and follow through on corrective actions so that testing changes operational readiness rather than simply producing a completed exercise.

6. Why does employee training still matter?

Security controls do not remove the need for people to recognize and report risky activity. OpenText recommends continuous awareness work, including ongoing training, phishing simulations, executive education, secure working practices and regular reinforcement of policies.

For an MSP, training should be treated as an ongoing customer practice rather than a one-time event. Include executives as well as other users, reinforce the reporting path for suspected incidents, and ensure that policy guidance reflects how the customer actually works.

7. How does consolidation improve resilience?

Fragmented security tools can leave visibility gaps, complicate investigations and add administrative work. OpenText argues that simplifying and consolidating operations can improve shared visibility, speed investigations, simplify administration and make controls more consistent.

Consolidation is not automatically beneficial in every environment. Evaluate whether a proposed approach preserves necessary coverage and integrations while reducing operational friction. For an MSP, useful comparison criteria include:

  • Coverage: endpoint, email, DNS, identity and MFA, cloud and SaaS data, and backup.
  • Detection and response: monitoring hours, alert triage, escalation paths, human investigation and incident-response support.
  • Recovery: backup isolation or immutability, supported workloads, restoration testing and documented recovery objectives.
  • Operating model: multi-tenant administration, integrations, policy consistency, reporting and staffing burden.
  • Evidence and fit: deployment and operational requirements, fit for customer environments, and verifiable service commitments.

These criteria are a practical way to assess fit, not a tested product ranking. A CRN-sponsored article attributes to the 2026 Cybersecurity Insiders’ Report the finding that 69 percent of organizations named tool sprawl as the top factor limiting cloud security effectiveness. That statistic is reported by CRN; it is not independently validated here, and it should not be read as proof that consolidation alone resolves cloud security issues.

How MSPs can put the strategies together

The seven recommendations work as a connected operating model: reduce avoidable exposure, detect and contain incidents, protect recoverable copies of data, and rehearse how the customer will continue and restore operations. When comparing managed-service approaches, assess the full delivery model—not just the number of tools—including coverage, response responsibilities, recovery evidence, administration and staffing demands.

OpenText’s official MSP page describes its Secure Cloud platform as supporting account management, license provisioning, security insights and threat response, and lists endpoint security, email security, SaaS backup and business communications archiving. It also describes program features such as monthly billing, channel support, Microsoft CSP licensing benefits, PSA integrations and go-to-market enablement. These are vendor descriptions and may change; MSPs should verify current program and service terms directly with OpenText: OpenText Cybersecurity MSP solutions.

OpenText’s PEM study page presents its own partner-economics figures: a $6.73 revenue multiplier for Expert partners over three years, 76.8% of total partner revenue occurring after procurement in the Adopt & Manage stages, and 35% of total revenue in Year 3 coming from managed services alone. OpenText frames the page as a study of full-lifecycle cybersecurity services; these are vendor-published study figures, not general industry benchmarks. See OpenText’s PEM Study page.
