Short answer: CXMT is growing at an exceptional rate as AI data-center demand lifts memory prices, but it has not caught Samsung, SK hynix or Micron in overall DRAM scale. Associated Press reported 50.8 billion yuan (about $7.5 billion) in CXMT revenue for the first quarter of 2026, more than 700% above the year-earlier quarter. That supports the headline’s roughly sevenfold framing, yet the company represented only about 9.5% of second-quarter 2026 DRAM revenue in TrendForce data cited by Tom’s Hardware, versus the three leaders’ combined 90% share in Counterpoint’s figures.

What CXMT’s “7x DRAM revenue” claim actually means

The most recent quarterly figure attributed to CXMT is 50.8 billion yuan ($7.5 billion) for Q1 2026, according to the Associated Press. The report described that as more than 700% year-over-year growth. Mathematically, a 700% increase means the new total is more than eight times the previous year’s level; market headlines often describe the same jump as roughly sevenfold growth because the reported percentage is rounded and stated as “more than” 700%.

Bloomberg separately reported that CXMT’s 2025 revenue exceeded 55 billion yuan ($8 billion), about 130% higher than in 2024. The two figures measure different periods, so they should not be added or treated as a single annual run rate. Together, they show an unusually rapid expansion rather than proof that CXMT has reached incumbent scale.

Is CXMT catching Samsung, SK hynix and Micron?

Not yet. The latest published share estimates still place CXMT well behind the established suppliers.

Supplier DRAM revenue share Period and source
Samsung 39% Q2 2026, Counterpoint Research
SK hynix 26% Q2 2026, Counterpoint Research
Micron 25% Q2 2026, Counterpoint Research
CXMT 9.5% Q2 2026, TrendForce data cited by Tom’s Hardware; 7.6% in Q1

Counterpoint’s three leaders account for 90% of the market in that estimate. The 9.5% CXMT figure comes from a different research provider, so the percentages are directional rather than a perfectly matched league table. They nevertheless show the central distinction: CXMT leads on growth rate, while the incumbents lead on installed capacity, customer coverage and cumulative manufacturing experience.

Counterpoint Research Vice President Neil Shah summarized the trajectory this way: “The question is not about ‘how’ but ‘when’ CXMT will be able to break into the Big Three Memory Club.” That is a statement about potential timing, not confirmation that the break has already happened.

Why the AI boom is lifting CXMT’s revenue

AI servers use high-bandwidth memory (HBM) alongside large quantities of conventional DRAM. Data-center operators are buying both types as they build and expand accelerator systems. When demand grows faster than new wafer and packaging capacity, suppliers can raise average selling prices, and even a smaller producer can post very large revenue gains.

S&P Global and Visible Alpha forecast CNY374 billion in CXMT revenue for 2026 and CNY366 billion in traditional-DRAM revenue. The same forecast called for a 206% increase in traditional-DRAM average selling prices and a 79% increase in shipments during 2026. Those are forecasts, not reported results, and they depend heavily on unusually strong pricing and continued shipment growth.

SK hynix’s slower growth relative to its peers also illustrates how share can move during a boom. Counterpoint Research Director MS Hwang said the company “grew slower than the competition as its market share declined with Samsung and Micron squeezing from both ends.” A fast-growing CXMT can gain percentage points without displacing the leaders in absolute production volume.

What CXMT is actually shipping

G5 DRAM and 24Gb LPDDR5X

CXMT’s fifth-generation platform, known as G5, has reportedly entered mass production with 24Gb LPDDR5X devices. That indicates commercial output for low-power memory used in mobile and other systems, but a process dimension is not a complete performance comparison.

Tom’s Hardware noted that the reported 11.95nm active-area half-pitch is not a conventional process-node designation. The number alone does not establish parity with the latest Micron, Samsung or SK hynix technologies. Public information still does not fully disclose CXMT’s yields, power consumption, bit density, cost per bit or the proportion of tested dies that meet customer specifications.

Proposed server DDR5 RDIMM

CXMT president Cao Kanyu was reported as saying the company expects a server DDR5 registered DIMM (RDIMM) based on a 4F² cell layout by the end of 2026. The vertical-transistor design is intended to reduce the cell footprint by about one-third on paper.

  • Top-Tier Overclocking: 32GB of DDR5 RAM 32GB, 6000MHz at extended timings of 36-38-38-80 provide stable overclocking performance and lower latency compared to usual Crucial Pro Series DRAM modules

No speed, capacity, customer, production-volume or independent test results were announced. CXMT also has not posted a corresponding announcement in its Chinese or English newsroom. Until those details and customer qualifications appear, the RDIMM should be treated as a roadmap target rather than an available, validated server product.

Could CXMT make RAM cheaper?

Its near-term competitive threat is pressure on commodity-DRAM pricing and capacity, not an immediate flood of cheaper HBM. If CXMT adds substantial output while demand cools, extra supply could weaken prices for standard PC, mobile and server DRAM. If AI infrastructure continues absorbing capacity, the opposite can occur: higher prices persist even as CXMT gains share.

  • Price relief becomes more plausible if CXMT’s yields improve, its fabs run at high utilization and its products qualify with major system customers.
  • Relief is less likely while AI-related demand keeps conventional DRAM and HBM supplies tight.
  • Retail DDR5 pricing will not track CXMT revenue one-for-one. Module prices also reflect distributors, module assembly, inventory cycles, exchange rates and the mix of capacities and speeds.

A DDR5 RAM module or server DDR5 RDIMM sold at retail is not evidence that the module was made by CXMT, and buying one does not provide exposure to CXMT’s potential IPO or company valuation.

Can China make HBM at the scale AI chips require?

The available information does not establish that CXMT has reached the HBM production scale, packaging maturity or customer qualification of the leading suppliers. HBM requires stacked DRAM dies, advanced packaging, high yields and close coordination with accelerator designers. CXMT’s disclosed 24Gb LPDDR5X production is therefore not proof of a competitive HBM product.

Access to advanced chipmaking tools is another constraint. The practical comparison is not only transistor dimensions; it includes packaging equipment, inspection, testing, materials, yield learning and the ability to expand capacity. Restrictions on access to some advanced manufacturing tools can make each of those steps slower or more expensive.

Is the growth sustainable for investors?

Revenue growth alone does not show that CXMT’s margins, cash flow or future share value are durable. The 2026 S&P Global/Visible Alpha forecast assumes a 206% rise in traditional-DRAM average selling prices and a 79% shipment increase, conditions that may not persist through a memory down-cycle.

Investors would need to distinguish several risks:

  • Price-cycle risk: DRAM revenue can fall sharply when supply outpaces demand.
  • Yield risk: High-volume output is less valuable if too many dies fail qualification or require costly rework.
  • Customer risk: Server and mobile buyers must validate products before large, recurring orders.
  • Tool and expansion risk: Fabs require sustained capital, equipment access and process learning.
  • HBM risk: Conventional DRAM growth does not guarantee entry into the most profitable AI-memory segment.

The reported numbers can support a thesis that CXMT is becoming a serious capacity and pricing competitor. They do not, by themselves, establish a durable profit trajectory, a confirmed IPO valuation or parity with the Big Three.

What to watch next

  1. Whether CXMT’s quarterly share continues rising beyond the 9.5% Q2 2026 estimate.
  2. Independent data on G5 yield, power, density and cost per bit.
  3. A formal CXMT announcement and customer qualification for the 4F² server DDR5 RDIMM.
  4. Evidence of qualified HBM production, including stack yields and advanced packaging volume.
  5. Traditional-DRAM average selling prices and shipments as 2026 forecasts meet actual results.
  6. Capacity expansion plans, equipment availability and the cash required to fund new fabs.

The practical reading of the sevenfold headline

CXMT’s surge is real and strategically important: AI demand has given the Chinese supplier a powerful growth window, and its expanding conventional-DRAM output could eventually influence prices. But the company remains a distant fourth by reported share, with important unknowns around yields, HBM, customer qualification and unrestricted access to advanced tools. “Rivaling” the incumbents is therefore a longer-term possibility, not the current market position.
