CVE-2026-73570 can let an unauthenticated attacker execute operating-system commands as the zimbra service account on certain Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) servers. The exposure is conditional: the server must be running a ZCS version before 10.1.20, have the optional zimbra-snmp package installed, and have SNMP notifications enabled. Zimbra lists version 10.1.20 as the fix release. Because authorities have reported active exploitation, administrators should verify those conditions, upgrade to a currently supported fixed release, and investigate potentially exposed systems for signs of compromise.

What CVE-2026-73570 affects

Zimbra describes CVE-2026-73570 as command injection in the SNMP monitoring component when SNMP notifications are enabled. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) identifies the affected configuration as ZCS before 10.1.20 with the optional zimbra-snmp package installed and notifications enabled. That means an older version alone does not establish that a server meets the stated vulnerable configuration. Check the package and notification settings as well as the version. Zimbra’s security advisory and the CSA alert provide the vendor and government descriptions.

CSA reports a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.9 out of 10. The NVD record surfaced a CNA-provided 8.9 HIGH score, while its own assessment was not yet provided in the record available for this coverage; the score should therefore be attributed to CSA or the CNA, not described as an independent NIST assessment.

How the attack path works

The entry point is specially crafted SMTP input, not an attacker signing in through an SNMP account. Microsoft’s account of investigated activity says the input can reach notification processing without authentication or user interaction. In its described sequence, a service-state change triggers health monitoring, and swatchdog incorporates an attacker-controlled value into a shell invocation of snmptrap. The resulting command execution runs with the privileges of the zimbra service account—not root. This is Microsoft’s investigation-based technical explanation, not an independent reproduction.

  • Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.

The distinction matters operationally: disabling or filtering an SNMP login path should not be assumed to address an SMTP-triggered flaw in SNMP notification handling. Determine whether the affected package and notification condition apply, then prioritize the vendor fix.

How to check and patch ZCS

  1. Identify the installed ZCS version. Compare it with the vendor’s affected range: versions before 10.1.20 are in scope when the stated package and notification conditions also apply.
  2. Check for the optional package. Establish whether zimbra-snmp is installed on the server. Do not infer package presence solely from the ZCS version.
  3. Verify the notification setting. Determine whether SNMP notifications are enabled in the deployment. The sources identify this as part of the vulnerable configuration.
  4. Plan an upgrade to a supported fixed release. Zimbra maps the issue to 10.1.20. Before upgrading, confirm the current supported release and the appropriate upgrade path with Zimbra; its advisory warns that older unsupported versions may share vulnerabilities and should be upgraded to supported versions.
  5. Validate the result. Confirm the installed release after the upgrade and retain the relevant change and system records for security review.

CSA urged users and administrators of affected products to update immediately. The listed fix version is 10.1.20, but the practical target should be a currently supported fixed release rather than an unsupported installation left at an old version.

What exploitation reports mean for incident response

On 21 August 2026, CSA reported that the vulnerability was reportedly being actively exploited. Microsoft’s 30 September 2026 threat-intelligence account describes activity it investigated, including web shells, reverse shells, persistence, privilege escalation, and data collection. Those are observed or reported behaviors—not a checklist that every compromised server will exhibit, nor proof that every stage occurred on one host. Microsoft also cautions that its composite attack-chain depiction combines behavior across multiple confirmed compromises.

If a potentially affected server was exposed before patching, assess it for compromise even after applying the fix. Review available evidence for unexpected process execution, web-root changes, persistence mechanisms, privilege escalation, and data collection. Interpret each command, file change, or connection only for what the evidence supports; an isolated artifact does not by itself establish the entire attack sequence.
