When cut and paste stops working, first check whether it fails in one app or across several. In a browser editor, try keyboard shortcuts and confirm the document is in edit mode; on a work or school device, an organization policy may restrict transfers between apps. If content appears but its formatting changes, that is a different problem from a paste that inserts nothing.
First, find out where cut and paste fails
Use the same harmless text or item to test the affected app and, if appropriate, a second app. Note whether the problem is limited to one document, one app, or multiple apps, and whether you are using a keyboard shortcut, toolbar button, or context menu.
- Only one app or document: Check that app’s editing mode, command behavior, and any app-specific issue before changing system settings.
- Several apps: Browser permissions, keyboard shortcuts, operating-system clipboard behavior, or a work/school policy may be relevant. This test narrows the possibilities; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Something pastes, but looks different: Focus on formatting or supported-content options rather than treating it as a failed paste.
In a browser editor, compare shortcuts with menus
Web editors may not have the same clipboard access as desktop apps. Google says that most browsers restrict web apps’ access to the computer clipboard through menus for security reasons. In Google Docs on a computer, the listed shortcuts are Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, and Ctrl+V on PC, or Command+C, Command+X, and Command+V on Mac. Google’s copy-and-paste instructions also describe right-click and toolbar Edit menu options in Chrome; using those menu options requires the Docs Offline extension.

- If the shortcut works but a menu command does not, use the shortcut or check the browser-specific instructions for the editor.
- If neither works, confirm the document is editable and check whether a managed-device restriction applies.
Make sure the document is in edit mode
In Word for the web, Reading view allows selected text to be copied out, but Microsoft says to choose Edit in browser to paste within the document or select individual words and phrases. Keyboard shortcuts work in Editing or Reviewing mode. The exact behavior can differ among Office web apps.

Microsoft also says Firefox users may need to allow JavaScript to use the clipboard for the Word ribbon’s Copy, Cut, and Paste commands. Keyboard shortcuts are an alternative. If the ribbon commands fail in Firefox, check the browser’s permission settings; if the shortcuts work, use them while you verify the setting. Check for work or school app-protection rules
On a managed device, the clipboard may be restricted intentionally rather than malfunctioning. Microsoft Intune’s app-protection policy called Restrict cut, copy, and paste between other apps controls which transfers between managed and unmanaged apps are allowed. The policy’s “Any app” setting does not restrict copy and paste between apps; other settings restrict transfers in particular directions.

For transfers between managed apps, Microsoft also advises checking that the destination document is opened from a managed location, such as OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online. Its guidance says app-protection policies do not apply to unsaved new documents. If you do not administer the device, ask your organization’s IT administrator to check the policy and the document location rather than trying to bypass the restriction. If paste works but formatting or content changes
A successful paste can still look wrong because the destination handles formatting or content differently. In Word, paste options include keeping source formatting, merging formatting, or keeping text only. These choices affect how formatting and non-text elements carry over; choose the option that matches the result you need. Microsoft explains the choices in its Word paste-formatting guide.

Office for the web may also handle tables, lists, images, or workbook objects differently depending on the app and destination. If a complex item loses structure, use the destination app’s supported insert or import method instead of assuming the clipboard is entirely broken. See Microsoft’s Office for the web guidance.
Use the Clip Studio Paint workaround only for the matching crash
Clip Studio Paint documents a specific crash: using Undo after the combined Cut and paste command while a vector line is selected. If that precisely matches your steps, use separate Cut and Paste commands from the Edit menu or the documented keyboard shortcuts. The support page says a future update will address the issue but does not name a release, so it does not establish which version fixes it. This workaround is not a general fix for clipboard failures. Why browser clipboard behavior can differ
Web applications operate under clipboard permission and user-activation conditions described in the W3C Clipboard API specification. That technical context helps explain why a web editor may behave differently from a native desktop app or require a user action or permission; it does not identify the cause in an unnamed app.

If the checks above do not resolve it, provide the affected app and version, device and operating system, browser if it is a web app, and whether the problem occurs in other apps. Describe the exact action—shortcut, ribbon or toolbar button, or context menu—and what happens: nothing, an error, a crash, or content with altered formatting. For a managed work or school device, mention that as well.
