Use Intune’s OneDrive administrative-template policy Set a custom name for the OneDrive folder (string ID CustomSyncRootFolderName) to change the local OneDrive sync-root folder shown on Windows devices. The policy maps your tenant ID to the folder name you choose. It affects the local sync location, not your organization’s Microsoft 365 or cloud identity.
Microsoft documents OneDrive policies for configuration through Intune administrative templates. Because Intune labels and policy availability can change, confirm that this setting appears in your tenant’s current Windows policy catalog before assigning it broadly.
What the setting changes
Windows OneDrive commonly creates a local sync root named OneDrive - {organization name}. The Set a custom name for the OneDrive folder policy replaces that local name with one you define for the tenant. Files still synchronize with the same OneDrive account and libraries; only the local root folder name changes.

This is a device policy for the Windows OneDrive sync app. The supplied Microsoft documentation does not establish support for macOS, so do not assume that assigning the Windows policy changes a Mac sync folder. It also does not rename the tenant, SharePoint site, Microsoft 365 organization, or any cloud URL.

Policy identifiers, limits and scope
Keep these values together when designing the profile. The tenant ID is the key that associates a custom name with the correct OneDrive tenant on a device.
| Item | Value or requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Policy display name | Set a custom name for the OneDrive folder | Use this name when searching the OneDrive administrative-template settings. |
| String ID | CustomSyncRootFolderName |
Useful when documenting the policy or locating it in tooling that exposes setting IDs. |
| Machine policy key | HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOneDriveCustomSyncRootFolderName |
The policy writes computer-level configuration, rather than a per-user preference. |
| Value name | Your OneDrive tenant ID | The tenant ID maps the selected folder name to the intended tenant. |
| Value data | Your chosen local folder name | This becomes the sync-root folder name on Windows. |
| Name validation | At least one character; cannot be exactly OneDrive; no characters invalid in Windows folder names |
Invalid input prevents the desired folder from being created. |
| Full sync-root path | Maximum 120 characters under Microsoft’s policy documentation | The root consumes part of the available path, leaving less room for nested folders and files. |
| Supported scenario | Windows OneDrive sync app | The provided rollout and policy information is Windows-specific. |
Microsoft recommends using as few characters as practical. A short, recognizable name leaves more path capacity for project folders, filenames and deeply nested document structures.
Configure the policy in Intune
1. Create or edit a Windows administrative-template profile
In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open the Windows configuration-policy workflow and create or edit a profile that uses OneDrive administrative templates. Search the settings for Set a custom name for the OneDrive folder. If the setting is absent, check that you are in the Windows administrative-template experience and that the OneDrive policy catalog in your tenant is current; do not substitute an unrelated sync setting.
2. Enable the setting and enter the tenant mapping
- Open the setting and set it to Enabled.
- In the setting’s options, add the OneDrive tenant ID as the value name.
- Enter the desired local folder name as the string value for that tenant ID.
- Save the profile and review the resulting configuration before assignment.
Conceptually, the resulting machine policy resembles this mapping:
HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOneDriveCustomSyncRootFolderName
<tenant-id> = <custom-folder-name>
Use the tenant ID exactly as supplied by your Microsoft 365 environment. A typo can leave the policy present on a device but unmatched to the account that OneDrive is trying to configure.

3. Assign to a pilot group first
Assign the profile to a small Windows pilot group before broad deployment. Include at least one device with a new OneDrive setup and one device whose user already synchronizes files. Check Intune device and user deployment results, then inspect the local outcome before expanding the assignment. A successful policy report confirms delivery; it does not by itself prove that an existing sync root has been renamed.

For a new OneDrive user, deliver the policy before the initial OneDrive sign-in and setup. OneDrive can then create the sync root with the custom name from the start, avoiding a later account reset.
Handle users who already synchronize
An existing user’s folder does not change automatically when the policy arrives. Microsoft requires the account to be unlinked and linked again before the new sync-root name takes effect. Treat that operation as a planned change because it temporarily changes the local sync relationship.
Prepare the user and data
- Explain that the account will be disconnected and connected again, and schedule the work outside critical editing windows.
- Open OneDrive’s backup controls through Manage backup.
- Stop folder backup as appropriate for the user’s configuration.
- When prompted, choose where to keep the files. Confirm that the selected location and your organization’s data-protection procedures are understood before proceeding.
Unlink, apply the policy, and relink
- Unlink the OneDrive account from the device after the backup decision is complete.
- Ensure the Intune policy containing
CustomSyncRootFolderNameis applied to the device. - Start OneDrive setup again and sign in to the same work or school account.
- Choose the local sync location when prompted and complete setup.
- Resume folder backup only if your organization’s policy and the user’s chosen file location allow it.
- Verify that the newly created root uses the intended custom name and that expected files and libraries appear.
Do not mass-unlink users until the pilot confirms how placeholders, offline files, backup folders and locally modified documents behave in your environment. The policy changes the root name; it is not a data-migration tool.
Choose a name that will survive real workloads
Meet the validation rules
The value cannot be empty, cannot be exactly OneDrive, and cannot contain characters Windows rejects in folder names. Use a plain, descriptive label such as an abbreviated legal entity or business unit, and test it on a pilot device before publishing it as a standard.

Protect path capacity
The policy documentation limits the complete OneDrive sync-root path to 120 characters. The limit includes the parent directories, the custom root and the remainder of a nested file path. A long organization name consumes capacity before a user creates a single project folder, so shortening the root is a practical way to reduce maximum-path errors.

Keep naming consistent across tenants
If your devices connect to more than one OneDrive tenant, create a separate tenant-ID mapping for each supported tenant and use names that users can distinguish without adding unnecessary length. Document the exact spelling and capitalization used in the profile so service-desk staff can recognize the intended root during troubleshooting.
Verify that Intune and OneDrive agree
Check policy reporting
Start with the profile’s deployment status in Intune. Investigate devices that report errors, conflicts or a pending state before changing local files. A device can receive the profile while OneDrive is signed out, paused or waiting for setup, so policy delivery and application state should be evaluated separately.
Inspect the machine policy
On a test device, an administrator can inspect the documented registry location:

HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOneDriveCustomSyncRootFolderName
Confirm that the tenant ID appears as the value name and that its string data is the intended folder name. Protect registry exports and screenshots because the tenant identifier is organizational configuration data.
Check the user-visible result
After OneDrive setup completes, open File Explorer and confirm the root folder name, then open representative synced folders and files. Check that expected status icons, online-only placeholders and locally available files behave normally. Record the final path for the pilot device so a later support ticket can distinguish a naming issue from a synchronization issue.

- Windows 11Pro for Workstations
The policy reports success but the folder keeps its old name
Check whether the user was already synchronizing when the policy was delivered. Existing accounts require the controlled stop-backup, unlink and relink sequence; merely restarting OneDrive or refreshing policy does not perform that reset. Also verify that the registry value name matches the signed-in tenant ID.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOneDrive rejects the chosen name
Replace an empty value, the exact word OneDrive, or any Windows-invalid character. Keep the replacement short and test it with a new account before asking existing users to relink.
Files still produce path-length errors
Measure the complete path, including parent directories, the custom root and nested names. The policy’s 120-character maximum applies to the full sync-root path, so shortening only a deeply nested project folder may not be enough. Reduce the root name and restructure unusually deep folders where your document-management rules permit.
A relink appears to risk local data
Pause the rollout, review the user’s backup state and confirm the selected keep-files location before unlinking. Validate the procedure with representative files and your organization’s retention, backup and recovery controls. Do not delete the old local folder as a shortcut; first establish that the relink completed and the expected content is available.

- For existing users, communicate the Manage backup, stop-backup, keep-files, unlink and relink sequence.
- Check Intune deployment status and the registry on pilot devices.
- Verify the File Explorer root, representative files and path behavior.
- Expand assignments only after the pilot’s data-protection and support procedures are approved.
What the 2026 rollout notice means
Microsoft’s archived Message Center item MC1242782, Set a custom name for the OneDrive sync folder, was published March 3, 2026 and updated March 18, 2026. It described the capability as an opt-in Windows policy intended in part to help reduce file-path-length problems. The archive marks that notice expired May 6, 2026. Use the current Microsoft Learn policy documentation for configuration and treat the Message Center entry only as historical rollout context: MC1242782 archive.
