A custom Steam controller layout can be the better choice when you know what feels wrong or need controls adapted to your preferences. A Community Layout is useful when you need a place to start. Neither is automatically better: the right choice depends on the game’s supported inputs and how the controls work for you in play.
When a custom Steam layout is the better fit
Steam lets you inspect and edit a game’s current controller layout, as well as browse and apply configurations shared by the community. Steam Support’s Steam Deck guide describes the current-layout editor; it does not claim that custom layouts outperform shared ones.
Customizing is most useful when you can name a specific problem: a button is hard to reach, an action is mapped in a way you dislike, or the game’s control scheme needs adaptation. You can change the relevant mapping and then test it in the game. This gives you a chance to tune the controls to your needs without assuming that another player’s configuration will suit you.

If you are new to a game or unsure which mappings are practical, browse its Community Layouts and treat one as a starting configuration. A shared layout can show how someone has arranged the controls, but availability does not establish that it is high quality or suitable for your preferences, controller, or game setup.

You can also adapt a community configuration rather than choosing between it and a fully original layout. Keep the parts that work, change the ones that do not, and test the result in the game.
Custom layouts vs. Community Layouts
| What matters | Custom layout | Community Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to your preferences | You choose and adjust the mappings. | Someone else chose the mappings; you can use them as-is or adapt them. |
| Fit to the game’s supported inputs | You can select mappings, but the game must accept the input style you use. | The same compatibility limits apply; a shared configuration is not proof that every mapping will work in your setup. |
| Finding or tuning controls | Requires deciding what to change and testing it. | Offers a configuration to inspect, though you may still need to adjust it. |
| Best starting point | When you already know what control problem you want to solve. | When you want an example or are not sure how to map the controls. |
How do I make a custom Steam controller layout?
On Steam Deck, Steam Support’s documented route starts from the game in your library. Interface wording may vary by SteamOS or client version.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Select the game in your Steam library and open its details.
- Choose the controller icon to open the game’s controller settings.
- View the current layout, then choose the option to edit it.
- Change the mapping you want to test, and try it in the game. If it does not behave as expected, check whether the game supports the selected input style.
To browse shared configurations, open the game’s controller settings, select the current template, and navigate to Community Layouts. Steam Support notes that users can browse and apply community-shared configurations.

Compatibility depends on the game and the input style assigned to a control. Steam’s configuration guidance says Joystick Move and Joystick Camera styles require gamepad support. Flexible Directional Pad and Button Pad mappings can instead use keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands. A control that works in one style may therefore fail if the game does not support the input it sends.

Check the game’s Steam store listing for its controller-support level, then test important controls in the game. Steam defines Full Controller Support as allowing download, launch, and play using only a controller, without needing a mouse or keyboard for configuration or in-game setup. Partial Controller Support means a controller may work during gameplay while a mouse or keyboard remains necessary for installation, configuration, or parts of the interface. These labels describe the level of support, not whether a particular community or custom layout is a good fit.

Steam’s Big Picture guidance names Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. It says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. This guidance is specific to Big Picture and does not guarantee compatibility with every game, operating system, or controller model.

A Steam Deck can also connect to external controllers and peripherals through a dock or hub. Valve’s docking guidance says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work without issue. A dock is relevant to a TV or external-peripheral setup, not a requirement for editing a layout.
