Custom software can support business growth when it removes a meaningful constraint: a process that generic tools cannot handle well, systems that do not share data, or a customer experience the business needs to distinguish. It is not a growth guarantee. The value depends on choosing the right problem, delivering a useful solution, and sustaining it over time.

How custom software can help a business grow

Growth is not limited to adding customers or revenue. A business may also need to handle more orders without multiplying manual work, serve customers more effectively, or adapt its operations as it enters new markets. A tailored application can contribute by changing how work gets done or how customers interact with the business.

Fit a distinctive workflow

When an important process does not fit an off-the-shelf product, employees may rely on spreadsheets, repeated data entry, or workarounds. An application designed around the actual process can encode business rules and reduce friction. That can make operations easier to scale, but only if the software reflects the real workflow and people adopt it. Microsoft’s modern application development guidance describes tailored application development as a way to address specific business and customer requirements.

Connect systems and reduce manual handoffs

Custom applications can exchange information with other systems through APIs or connectors. For example, a business might link order processing with inventory and customer records rather than having staff copy details between separate tools. The potential benefit is more consistent information and less repetitive work; integration still requires careful design, testing, and monitoring.

Shape a customer experience around the service

A business may need a customer portal, booking flow, or service interface that reflects how it actually serves people. A purpose-built experience can support differentiation when generic tools do not offer the right interaction. The software itself does not create customer loyalty: the service, usability, reliability, and fit all matter.

Adapt the application as needs change

Automated testing, monitoring, and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) can help teams release and assess smaller changes. These practices can make it easier to respond to new requirements while checking quality, stability, and security. They require suitable engineering practices and ongoing ownership; they do not make change effortless or risk-free.

What the reported growth figures do—and do not—show

Published figures can provide context, but they should not be mistaken for a forecast of what a custom application will achieve for one business.

  • Developer velocity: A 2020 Microsoft summary of McKinsey’s Developer Velocity research says organizations that recognize developer velocity outpaced competitors’ revenue growth by up to five times. This is an attributed association about organizational developer environments, not evidence that custom software alone caused the growth. See Microsoft’s summary.
  • AI-enabled software development: McKinsey’s 2025 survey article reports improvements of 16–30% in productivity, customer experience, and time to market, and 31–45% in software quality among its highest-performing AI-driven software organizations. Those findings concern high-performing organizations using AI in software development; they are not typical results for custom application projects. See McKinsey’s article.
  • Cloud modernization: McKinsey’s 2018 article cites potential IT overhead cost reductions of 30–40% from cloud adoption. This older estimate is not a current forecast or a guaranteed saving from building custom software. See McKinsey’s cloud-modernization analysis.

None of these figures isolates the causal effect of custom software on business growth. For a specific project, define the expected operational or customer outcome and measure it directly rather than treating broad industry findings as a promised return.

Cloud hosting does not automatically modernize an application

Cloud services can support an application through managed data services, monitoring, or capacity that can be adjusted as demand changes. Those capabilities are useful only when they fit the application’s needs and the team’s operating model.

Moving a traditional, monolithic application to cloud hosting does not by itself give it cloud-native flexibility. McKinsey describes modernization as potentially requiring application remediation, new operating practices, security changes, and workforce upskilling. Cloud can be part of a broader transformation, not a standalone growth switch. Consider the modernization work and skills needed alongside any migration.

Build, buy, or modernize: how to decide

Custom development is one option, not the default. Compare it with an existing product that already fits, or with improving a system you already own. No universal build-versus-buy rule applies: the right choice depends on the value of better fit relative to delivery and ownership demands.

Decision factor Questions to ask
Process and customer fit Which requirements are genuinely distinctive, and can an existing product meet them without fragile workarounds?
Integration and data Can the necessary systems exchange information reliably? What migration, data cleanup, or ongoing integration work is involved?
Time and iteration How soon is a first useful release needed? Can the solution evolve after launch as needs change?
Total ownership What are the delivery costs and continuing costs of maintenance, support, infrastructure, and upgrades?
Scale, availability, and security What capacity, uptime, access controls, and security responsibilities does the application require?
Team capability Does the business have the skills and operating model to maintain the application, or a dependable plan to obtain them?
Value of differentiation Is the expected improvement in service or process important enough to justify building and operating something tailored?

A useful first step is to name the constraint and the outcome in measurable terms—for example, fewer manual handoffs or faster completion of a specific customer request. Then compare solutions against that outcome, including implementation and long-term operating effort. If a ready-made product meets the need reliably, custom work may add unnecessary complexity. If the gap is important and persistent, a tailored application may be worth evaluating.

Is custom software worth it for a small business?

It can be, but size alone does not settle the question. A small business may have a high-value process that no suitable product handles, while a larger business may be better served by standard software. The case is stronger when the problem is frequent or costly, the required improvement is clear, and the business can support the application after launch.

Before committing to a full build, clarify the essential requirements, identify integrations and security responsibilities, and determine how the result will be maintained. The goal is not to own custom code; it is to solve a business problem in a way whose benefits justify both delivery and continuing care.
