Use the classic Region dialog to change how Windows 11 displays dates. Open Control Panel > Clock and Region > Change date, time or number formats, then choose either an available format on the Formats tab or Additional Settings > Date for individual date options. This changes presentation, not the computer’s actual clock, time zone, or Windows interface language.
The exact controls can differ by Windows language and build. Windows documents the navigation and the Date tab, but it does not establish one universal custom-pattern code syntax for every Windows 11 installation, so use the controls displayed on your computer rather than copying an unverified token recipe.
Decide what you actually need to change
“Date format” can mean several different Windows settings. Identify the target before opening a dialog so you do not change more of your regional profile than intended.
Date presentation
This is the order and style used to display dates, such as whether a day appears before a month, how month names are written, and which regional conventions are used. The Region dialog is the correct place to make this change.

Calendar system
Some Windows installations expose a calendar-type choice in the Date tab. Microsoft’s documented example uses that control to select the Japanese calendar. The calendars available to you depend on the selected regional format and Windows build.
Actual date, time, or time zone
If the clock is wrong, the date itself is incorrect, or the time zone needs changing, use Settings > Time & language > Date & time. The Settings app controls the system’s time, date, time zone, and daylight-saving behavior; the Region dialog controls how those values are presented.
Windows interface language
The display language determines the language used by the Windows user interface. It is separate from regional formatting. You do not need to change the display language simply to alter date order or another date convention.

Windows offers a broad regional choice and a narrower date-specific route. Pick the narrowest scope that solves your problem.
| Route | Where it is | Scope | Use it when | Possible side effects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Choose a regional format | Region dialog, Formats tab | Applies the selected locale’s standard regional conventions | You want a complete regional default, including its normal date presentation | Other region-sensitive formats can change as well |
| Adjust date settings individually | Additional Settings > Date | Targets the date options exposed by your installation | You want to change a date detail without switching the whole regional profile | Available fields vary by language and Windows build |
If the only requirement is a different date order, start with the individual settings route. Changing the entire regional format can also affect number, currency, time, and other locale-sensitive conventions.
Open the Windows 11 Region dialog
- Open Start and search for Control Panel. Select the desktop Control Panel app from the results.
- In Control Panel, select Clock and Region. If your Control Panel is using a different view, switch to a view that shows categories or locate the same Region controls through the available list.
- Select Change date, time or number formats. Windows opens the classic Region dialog.
- Stay on the Formats tab to review the current regional format and its date/time previews. Do not use the separate Date & time page in Settings for this task; that page changes the clock and time-zone configuration.
The labels can be translated when Windows uses another interface language. Look for the controls that correspond to Clock and Region, Change date, time or number formats, Formats, and Additional Settings.
Choose a complete regional format
When this is the right choice
Selecting a different entry in the Formats tab is appropriate when your work, residence, or data conventions have moved to another locale and you want Windows to use that locale’s normal defaults. It is also the simplest option when you want the date, time, decimal, and other regional conventions to be internally consistent.

How to apply it
- In the Region dialog’s Formats tab, open the regional-format list.
- Choose the locale whose conventions you need. Review the date and time examples shown in the dialog before committing the change.
- Use the dialog’s confirmation controls to apply the selection. Depending on your build, the controls may be labeled Apply, OK, or presented in a slightly different order.
- Reopen the dialog if necessary and confirm that the selected format remains shown.
This route changes a regional profile rather than one isolated date field. Check applications that use numbers, currency, or time as well as applications that show dates.

Customize individual date settings
Use Additional Settings when you want to keep the broader regional identity but adjust a date-specific option.
- From the Region dialog, select Additional Settings.
- In Customize Format, select the Date tab. This is the documented location for individual date controls and calendar-related settings.
- Read every field that your installation provides. Depending on the selected locale and Windows build, you may see choices for date presentation or a Calendar Type control. The available list is authoritative for your computer; it is not safe to assume that another Windows 11 edition exposes the same fields.
- Change only the option that addresses your requirement. If you are changing a calendar type, confirm that the chosen calendar is supported by the selected regional format and that the displayed examples change as expected.
- Use the dialog’s apply and confirmation controls when they are available. Microsoft documents Apply and OK in related Customize Format examples, but the exact buttons can vary by build and by the setting being edited.
- Close the remaining Region dialog after the change is saved.
Windows documentation confirms the Date tab and its calendar example, but does not provide a universal list of custom date-format tokens. Do not paste a code copied from an unrelated guide unless the field and syntax are explicitly present in your own dialog.
Understand the date options you see
Date order and separators
A regional convention determines whether the day, month, and year are presented in a particular order and which separators or textual forms are used. The preview in the Region dialog is the safest way to identify the effect of a selection. If your installation exposes separate date fields, change the relevant field and inspect the preview before accepting it.

Some Windows builds expose more than one date presentation, commonly a compact form and a longer form that may include a written month or additional text. Do not assume that every application uses the same one. An app can choose its own format even when Windows provides both values.
Calendar type
Where the Date tab offers Calendar Type, the choice affects how dates are interpreted and displayed in supported Windows surfaces. The Japanese-calendar example in Microsoft’s documentation demonstrates the location of this control; it does not mean that every calendar is available in every locale.
Locale names and translated labels
The regional-format list and field names follow the language and locale configuration of Windows. A translated label can look different from an English screenshot while representing the same setting. Use the preview and the position of the control, not an exact screenshot, to verify your selection.
What changes and what does not
What the Region settings can influence
Windows regional preferences provide date conventions to the operating system and to applications that read those preferences. File listings, notification surfaces, and Microsoft applications may reflect the change after the setting is applied, although some programs refresh only when restarted.

What they do not guarantee
There is no universal guarantee that every third-party application honors Windows regional formatting. Software can store its own locale, use a server-defined format, or format dates according to an account or document setting. If one application continues to show a different order, check that application’s language, region, report, or date-display preferences.

What a regional switch can affect beyond dates
Changing the overall format can alter other regional conventions, including number or currency presentation and possibly time-related defaults. If those changes are unwanted, return to the original regional format and use the individual controls under Additional Settings instead.
Verify the result without changing the clock
- Return to Control Panel > Clock and Region > Change date, time or number formats.
- On the Formats tab, review the displayed regional format and date previews.
- Open Additional Settings > Date and confirm that the individual choice or calendar type is still selected.
- Open a Windows surface that displays a date, such as a file list or notification, and check whether its presentation now matches the preference.
- Restart an application that was open while you changed the setting. Programs that cache regional values may not update an existing window.
Do not use the clock in the taskbar as the only test. It can show a date according to its own display context, while a document, file list, or application may use a different date field.
Troubleshoot common problems
The Control Panel path is difficult to find
Search for Control Panel from Start rather than searching Settings. In Control Panel, open Clock and Region, then choose Change date, time or number formats. If category links are not visible, use the Control Panel view options to locate the Region entry.
The Date tab is missing or has fewer fields
The available controls depend on the selected locale, Windows language, edition, and build. First verify that you opened Additional Settings from the Region dialog, not a similarly named Settings page. If the Date tab is present but has fewer choices, use the fields that are actually provided; do not substitute undocumented pattern codes.
The change appears in Windows but not in an application
Close and reopen the application, then inspect its own regional or date preferences. If the application obtains dates from an online service or a document template, its format may be controlled outside Windows. The operating system setting is a preference supplied to compatible software, not an enforcement mechanism for every program.
The wrong value is shown, not merely the wrong format
If the day, month, or year itself is incorrect, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Check the date, time, time zone, and automatic time options there. Changing a regional format cannot repair an incorrect system clock.
Changing the region affected numbers or currency
That is an expected consequence of choosing a different complete regional format. Reopen the Region dialog, restore the prior format, and then use Additional Settings > Date for a narrower adjustment. Record the original selection before experimenting so it can be restored accurately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA setting reverts after a restart
Recheck the Region dialog after restarting. If the selection is no longer saved, your organization may be applying a policy, a management profile, or a sign-in script. On a managed computer, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the value.

Keep regional format, display language, and account settings separate
Windows lets you combine a display language with a different regional format. The interface can remain in one language while dates follow another locale’s convention. This is useful for multilingual users and international teams, and it avoids changing menu labels merely to obtain a different date order.
Some Microsoft applications also expose account, document, or application-level language settings. If a document continues to use a different date style after Windows is configured, inspect those settings before changing the operating-system language.
Use a safe change-and-restore workflow
Regional preferences can influence work files and reports, so make changes deliberately when a computer is used by more than one person.
- Write down the current entry on the Region dialog’s Formats tab.
- Note whether the Date tab contains a custom choice or calendar type that must be restored.
- Change one setting at a time.
- Check a representative file list, document, and application.
- If an unrelated format changes, restore the recorded regional format and choose a narrower date setting.
Changing these preferences does not convert date values stored in files. A spreadsheet or database may store a date as an underlying value and apply its own display format; changing Windows can affect the display of compatible views without rewriting the stored data.
Limits you should expect across Windows 11 builds
Windows 11 is delivered in different languages, editions, update levels, and organizational configurations. The path through Control Panel is documented, but the exact names, previews, field order, and available calendar choices can differ. Screenshots from another build may therefore show controls that are absent on yours.
Use the labels in your current Region dialog as the source of truth. If an option is not shown, Windows has not exposed that customization through the selected locale or build. Avoid treating an online list of formatting tokens as a universal Windows 11 interface; the documented material does not establish such a syntax for every installation.
Quick decision checklist
- Need to correct the clock, date, or time zone? Use Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Need a complete locale change? Select a regional format on the Region dialog’s Formats tab.
- Need only a date detail or calendar choice? Open Additional Settings > Date.
- Want to keep Windows menus in their current language? Leave the display-language setting unchanged.
- Did one app ignore the change? Restart it and check its own date or locale preferences.
- Did numbers or currency change unexpectedly? Restore the original regional format and make an individual date adjustment instead.
- Cannot find a promised field or code box? Treat its absence as a build or locale difference; do not invent a syntax.
Restore the previous configuration
To undo a change, return to Control Panel > Clock and Region > Change date, time or number formats. Select the regional format you recorded earlier, or reopen Additional Settings > Date and select the previous date option. Confirm the dialogs, then restart affected applications. If the problem concerns the actual clock rather than its presentation, restore the value under Settings > Time & language > Date & time instead.
