A custom OS can replace the software supplied with a Samsung tablet, but support is specific to the exact model and variant—not just the Galaxy Tab name. The available official LineageOS example in the sources here covers only the older Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GSM, models P3100 and P5100; it does not show that newer Galaxy Tab models are supported. Before considering an installation, verify the full model number, regional and carrier variant, bootloader-unlock options, and current instructions from the project that maintains the build.
What a custom OS means on a Samsung tablet
A custom OS, often called a custom ROM or custom firmware, is software that replaces or modifies the operating system provided by the manufacturer. People may consider one when they want a different software experience or when they are investigating alternatives to the tablet’s stock software. Availability and suitability depend on whether a project supports the exact device and whether its bootloader can be unlocked in that device’s region and configuration.
“Samsung tablet custom OS” is not one universal installation. Wi-Fi and cellular versions, regional models, and carrier variants can differ. A guide for one Galaxy Tab cannot safely be assumed to apply to another that has a similar name.

- Identify the complete model number. Check the tablet’s settings or its device label, and note whether it is Wi-Fi or cellular and any regional or carrier variant.
- Find the project’s official device page. Confirm that it lists your complete model or variant, and read that page’s installation instructions and current maintenance information. Do not rely on a guide for a similarly named tablet.
- Check bootloader unlocking separately. Confirm whether your exact model and configuration allow unlocking in your region. The sources cited here do not establish a comprehensive, current unlockability list for Samsung tablets.
- Check Samsung support separately. Samsung’s Knox supported-device page lists Knox compatibility and, for some devices, software or security-maintenance targets. It is not a catalogue of custom OS builds, and Samsung notes that features and compatibility can vary by region and OS platform. See Samsung Knox device compatibility.
The official LineageOS guide cited here is explicitly for “Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GSM)” and names P3100 and P5100. That is evidence for those listed models and that guide—not for current Galaxy Tab models generally. Read the LineageOS guide for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GSM.

What changes when you move away from approved Samsung software
Knox and device integrity
Samsung says the Knox Warranty Bit provides “a tamper-resistant, persistent record of when a device runs in a non-approved state.” Samsung’s Knox attestation documentation also describes checking whether a device has been rooted or run unofficial firmware. These are reasons not to assume Knox-dependent functions or apps that rely on device integrity will continue to work after modification; the outcome can depend on the specific app and service.

Maintenance is a separate question
Stock-software updates from Samsung and maintenance of a custom build are separate support channels. Check both: whether Samsung lists maintenance information for your device and whether the custom OS project currently publishes and maintains a build for your exact model. Knox compatibility alone does not establish custom OS support.
What to prepare before an installation
Do not use generic Samsung flashing steps as a substitute for a model-specific guide. For the named Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GSM, the LineageOS instructions call for reading the full guide first, enabling USB debugging, checking that the stock operating system functions, using a computer connection, and removing Google accounts to avoid Factory Reset Protection. The guide also describes resetting or formatting data.

- Back up anything you need to keep; installation can erase data.
- Confirm that every model identifier in the guide matches your tablet before following any steps.
- Have access to a computer and a suitable USB data cable. Check your tablet’s connector rather than assuming a cable type.
- Read the complete, current instructions for your device before beginning, including prerequisites and recovery directions.
- Stop if a step fails. The LineageOS guide warns against proceeding after a failure and says to follow its instructions precisely.
The LineageOS guide says installation is at the user’s risk and that “LineageOS is provided as-is with no warranty.” Its preparation and package steps apply only to the device it names; they are not a general procedure for Samsung tablets.

- Consider it only when an official project page supports your exact model and variant, bootloader unlocking is feasible for your configuration, and you are comfortable with data loss and recovery risk.
- Pause or stay on stock software when the project page does not list your model, you cannot verify unlockability, you depend on Knox-sensitive functions, or you do not have a reliable backup and a device-specific recovery path.
If no official project page supports the exact tablet, the available evidence does not establish that a custom OS can be installed on it. A similarly named model’s guide is not a safe workaround.
