A custom Internet domain is a registered Internet name you choose and configure for your own identity or project. It gives services such as a website or email a name people can use, but the registration itself does not provide a website, hosting, or email service.
What a custom Internet domain means
“Custom domain” is an informal way to describe a domain name registered for your own use. It is not a separate kind of DNS technology or a special type of URL. A domain name is a readable name in the Domain Name System (DNS), which associates names with Internet destinations and services.
ICANN describes registration as creating a named realm in DNS. In other words, registering a domain gives you control over that name’s place in the DNS hierarchy and lets you configure it for services you want to use.

Domain names are hierarchical, with parts separated by dots. In whois.icann.org, org is the top-level domain, icann is the second-level name, and whois is a subdomain at the third level. The authority for parts of a domain can be delegated at different levels.

A subdomain is a name beneath a domain. For example, blog.example.com is a subdomain of example.com. Subdomains can be configured for separate services or areas, provided the necessary DNS and service setup is in place.
How a domain differs from a website, URL, and hosting
A domain is a name, not the content or service that people reach through it. ICANN notes that a domain name is not the same thing as a website or a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). A URL identifies a particular resource and may include a domain as one component; for example, a domain alone does not specify a particular page or file.
- Domain name: the readable name in DNS, such as
example.com. - Website: content or a service made available through a domain.
- DNS hosting: management of DNS records that direct a domain or subdomain to services.
- Web hosting: server storage and access that make website content available to browsers.
- Email hosting: the service that provides mailboxes and handles email for a domain.
Registering a domain does not automatically create a working website or mailbox. The name must be configured to point to the relevant services, and those services must be provided separately or as part of a bundle.
What happens when you register a domain
For names under generic top-level domains, registration is handled through accredited registrars or their resellers. Country-code top-level domains use the registration channels set by their operators. ICANN provides information about the domain name system; it does not sell domain names directly. See ICANN’s registrar information for the registration route.
Rank #2
Registration, DNS management, and hosting are distinct functions, even when one company offers several of them. The registrar handles registration; a DNS host manages the records; and a web or email host supplies the service those records direct users to.

The setup depends on what you want the domain to do. For a website, you need website content and a web host, plus DNS records configured to direct the domain to that host. For email, you need an email service and the DNS records it specifies. You can also use subdomains for separate services, such as a blog or application.
- Register the name through an appropriate registrar or country-code domain operator.
- Choose the intended service, such as a website, email, or a subdomain for another application.
- Set up that service with a web host, email provider, or other service operator as needed.
- Configure DNS with the records and destination details provided by the service. DNS settings may be managed by the registrar or a separate DNS host.
Bundled services can simplify administration, but the underlying jobs remain different: owning the registration does not itself supply the website or email.

How to think about choosing services
If you are preparing to register or configure a domain, check the provider’s terms for the specific service you need. Registration and hosting are separate decisions, even when offered together.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that the provider supports the top-level domain you want.
- Check what DNS records and controls are available if you will connect multiple services or use subdomains.
- Review renewal terms for the registration and any bundled hosting separately.
- Know which organization manages DNS and where to change records when a service is added or moved.
