Cursor skills are reusable, folder-based workflows for Agent: each one packages task-specific instructions in a SKILL.md file and can include supporting scripts, references, templates, or assets. Create a skill folder in a supported project or user directory, then call it in Agent with /skill-name or attach it with @. Use a skill for a repeatable procedure; use a rule for instructions that should apply persistently or to matching files.
What a Cursor skill is
Cursor describes Agent Skills as a portable, version-controlled way to teach agents domain-specific tasks. Think of a skill as a small workflow package rather than a one-line prompt: its SKILL.md explains what to do, while optional supporting files can hold scripts, reference material, templates, or assets. Agent discovers available skills and can load supporting resources when they are relevant, instead of placing every detail in every conversation. See Cursor’s Agent Skills documentation.
For example, a deployment skill might explain which checks to run, how to build and deploy to staging, and how to verify the result. A skill can provide instructions and scripts, but its presence does not by itself establish that those scripts are safe or validated; review them as you would other project files.
How to create a skill
You can ask Cursor’s built-in /create-skill to guide you, or make the folder and file yourself. A minimal project example is .cursor/skills/deploy-staging/SKILL.md. The folder directly containing SKILL.md supplies the skill name; a parent category folder does not.

- Create the skill directory. For a repository skill, use a supported project root such as
.cursor/skills/deploy-staging/. For a personal skill, use a supported user-level root described below. - Add
SKILL.md. Put YAML frontmatter at the top, followed by clear instructions for the task. - Write a specific description and repeatable process. State when the skill is useful, what inputs it expects, and the steps or expected results. Keep the main file focused; move less frequently needed detail into references.
- Add optional supporting folders only if needed. You can include
scripts/,references/, andassets/. Explain script inputs and expected outputs in the instructions. - Open Agent in the relevant project context and invoke the skill. If it does not appear, check its path, folder name, and frontmatter.
The reference requires name and description; the folder name must match the name. Optional paths patterns can limit when a skill is relevant. A compact example is:
---
name: deploy-staging
description: Run the project's checks, deploy to staging, and verify the deployment.
paths:
- "apps/web/**"
---
# Deploy to staging
1. Run the project's required checks.
2. Build and deploy the web app to staging.
3. Verify the deployment health endpoint.
Optional disable-model-invocation: true makes a skill explicit-invocation only, like a traditional slash command. Cursor release notes also document user-invocable: false, which keeps a skill available to the model while hiding it from slash autocomplete and typed slash resolution. These settings describe different behavior; choose the one that matches whether you want model invocation, user invocation, or both. Check the release notes for interface changes.

Where to put a skill
Cursor documents project and user skill directories, along with compatibility discovery from Claude and Codex skill directories. Project skills can be committed and reviewed with a repository; user skills are intended for your local setup.

| Scope | Supported directory | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Project | .agents/skills/ |
You want the skill stored with and shared through the project. |
| Project | .cursor/skills/ |
You want a Cursor-specific project location. |
| User | ~/.agents/skills/ |
You want a personal skill available across local projects. |
| User | ~/.cursor/skills/ |
You want a personal skill in Cursor’s user-level location. |
| Compatibility | .claude/skills/, .codex/skills/, ~/.claude/skills/, or ~/.codex/skills/ |
You want Cursor to discover skills in these documented compatibility locations. |
Nested project locations such as apps/web/.cursor/skills/ are supported. A nested skill is surfaced when Agent works within the relevant project area. Optional paths frontmatter can likewise scope relevance; it is a relevance setting, not a security boundary. Because discovery behavior can change, consult the current Agent Skills documentation and Skills Help Center article if a skill is not found.

How to invoke a skill in Agent
- Slash invocation: Type
/and choose a skill, or enter its name, such as/deploy-staging, to use it for the request. - Attach as context: Type
@and select the skill. - Keep it active for a session: Cursor documents using a skill through a Custom Mode. In the interface covered by its current skills guidance, press
Option+Enteron Mac orAlt+Enteron Windows. CLI behavior is documented separately, so do not assume the same interaction applies there.
Skills are discovered and made available to Agent; that does not mean every skill automatically runs in every conversation. Explicitly invoke one when you want to ensure the workflow is used. See the Skills Help Center article for current interface guidance.
Skills or rules: which should you use?
Cursor’s practical distinction is that rules provide concise constraints or guidance, while skills supply detailed, repeatable procedures. Rules can apply always, be selected intelligently, match file patterns, or be mentioned manually. Skills are generally available to Agent and used when relevant or explicitly invoked.

- 【2-in-1 Mouse & Jiggler – Keep Your Computer Awake】** Combine a wireless mouse and mouse mover in one convenient device. Press and hold the DPI button for 3–5 seconds to activate jiggler mode. Quiet random cursor movements help keep your computer awake during presentations, downloads, meetings, or short breaks without using a separate mouse mover.
- 【Smart Auto-Pause & Resume Jiggler Mode】** Need to start working again? Simply move the mouse and jiggler mode pauses automatically, allowing you to use it as a normal computer mouse. After 3–5 seconds of inactivity, the cursor movement resumes. Press and hold the DPI button again for 3–5 seconds to fully exit jiggler mode.
- 【Rechargeable, Quiet and 4 Adjustable DPI】** The built-in rechargeable battery can be conveniently charged with the included USB-C cable, helping reduce the need for disposable batteries. Quiet clicks minimize distractions in home offices, shared workspaces, libraries, and late-night environments. Choose from 800, 1200, 1600, or 2000 DPI for browsing, spreadsheets, and everyday work.
- 【Light-Up Design and One-Receiver Convenience】** Colorful lighting adds personality to your desk setup while making the mouse easy to spot in low-light environments. Both standard mouse and jiggler functions work through one included USB receiver, helping save valuable USB ports on laptops with limited connections. Simply plug in the receiver, turn on the mouse, and start using it.
- 【Ergonomic Design & Universal Compatibility】 The ergonomic mouse is designed with human-engineered contours perfect for S/M hand sizes. This cordless mouse reduces wrist fatigue during long work sessions. Plug & play via USB-A connection – no drivers or adapters needed. This rechargeable wireless mouse works with Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux. (Note: side buttons not compatible with macOS). Backed by a 12-month warranty – just message us if any issue arises
| Choose a rule for… | Choose a skill for… |
|---|---|
| A short instruction such as “Use TypeScript for new files.” | A multi-step workflow such as running checks, deploying to staging, and verifying health. |
| Guidance that should apply persistently or to matching files. | A procedure you want Agent to follow when needed. |
These are different triggering models: a skill is not simply a rule that always runs. Cursor’s documentation also provides /migrate-to-skills for eligible dynamic rules without globs and eligible slash commands. Rules that always apply or target specific file patterns have different triggering behavior and are not migrated by that tool; user rules are not migrated because they are not filesystem files. See Cursor’s Rules documentation and its Agent Skills documentation.

~/.cursor/skills/sync to Cloud Agents, and only when Settings → Agents → Sync Skills for Cloud Agents is enabled. Cursor describes this sync as private to the user. Teams or Enterprise administrators may disable skill sync. - Team marketplace: To publish a personal skill to the team, open Customize → Skills, select the skill, and publish it to the team’s Default marketplace.
- Self-hosted workers: Unsynced local skills are not automatically present. Include the skill in the project files or bake a copy into the worker image, then confirm it exists in that runtime.
