Cursor’s recommended installation route for Debian and Ubuntu is its APT repository. Add Cursor’s signing key and package source, then install the cursor package. Cursor also documents an AppImage option. Its reviewed installation pages do not specifically certify either Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04, so treat these as general Debian/Ubuntu instructions rather than version-specific compatibility claims.

Install Cursor with APT

Cursor’s Quickstart labels the Debian/Ubuntu APT method as recommended. The commands below are the ones Cursor publishes; they have not been independently tested for this guide.

  1. Add Cursor’s signing key to the system keyring:

    curl -fsSL https://downloads.cursor.com/keys/anysphere.asc | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/cursor.gpg > /dev/null
  2. Add the stable repository. The architecture qualifier and signed-by setting are part of Cursor’s published configuration:

    echo "deb [arch=amd64,arm64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/cursor.gpg] https://downloads.cursor.com/aptrepo stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cursor.list > /dev/null
  3. Refresh APT’s package index:

    sudo apt update
  4. Install Cursor:

    sudo apt install cursor

These steps add Cursor’s repository to APT, allowing the package manager to install the cursor package. For the authoritative command sequence, see Cursor Quickstart.

Use the AppImage instead

If you prefer a portable application file rather than adding an APT repository, download the Linux AppImage from Cursor’s downloads page. In a terminal, move to the directory containing the downloaded file, then grant it execute permission and launch it:

chmod +x Cursor-*.AppImage
./Cursor-*.AppImage

The wildcard works when the downloaded filename starts with Cursor- and there is one matching AppImage in the current directory. Otherwise, substitute the exact filename in both commands.

Choose between APT and AppImage

Route What Cursor documents
APT package Preferred for Debian/Ubuntu; Cursor says apt packages provide desktop icons, automatic updates, and CLI tools.
AppImage Alternative portable route: download the file, make it executable, and run it. The cited Quickstart does not attribute the package-specific benefits above to AppImage.

Cursor’s stated preference is: “The apt and yum packages are preferred over AppImage. They provide desktop icons, automatic updates, and CLI tools.” This describes Cursor’s rationale; it is not a guarantee about a particular system’s update behavior.

What to know about Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04

The official Quickstart describes the package route for Debian/Ubuntu, and Cursor’s general installation help describes Linux installation through apt or dnf when available, or by extracting an AppImage or archive. Neither reviewed official page explicitly names Ubuntu 24.04 or certifies Ubuntu 26.04. The commands here therefore reflect Cursor’s documented general Debian/Ubuntu method, not a version-specific support statement.

A community discussion about Ubuntu 26.04 reports one user’s update trouble and discusses differences between AppImage and DEB update flows. That anecdote does not establish a general compatibility issue or guarantee how current updates behave. See Cursor Community.

Open Cursor for the first time

After installation, open Cursor, sign in with a Cursor account, and open a project folder. Cursor’s general installation help describes this first-run path; it does not identify Ubuntu-specific prerequisites. See Cursor installation help.
