For communications service providers (CSPs), curated network data can give AI systems the context to reason about service health, future capacity needs, and application requests. The key is not simply to shrink packet volumes: it is to connect traffic with subscriber sessions, timing, location, network domains, and performance indicators. Predictive maintenance, capacity planning, and third-party applications are three proposed uses of that contextual view—not outcomes established by independent deployment studies.

What curated data means for a CSP

Raw packet traffic is abundant but difficult to use directly for operational reasoning. Rick Fulwiler, senior director of product management at NETSCOUT, defines curation as transforming packet-level traffic into structured, contextualized information that AI systems can query and reason about. In his description, the work correlates details such as subscriber session lifecycle, location, timing, session flow, network domain, and key performance indicators.

That distinction matters: curation is more than filtering or compressing data. A smaller dataset may still lack the relationships needed to tell whether a performance change coincides with a subscriber transition, a particular network domain, or a service-quality shift. The proposed value is a representation of network state with those relationships intact.

Fulwiler’s August 24, 2026 article in The AI Journal is vendor-affiliated thought leadership. It proposes collecting and curating data near its source, including through deep packet inspection (DPI), then making a structured view available to an AIOps platform or AI agent. It does not present independent comparative testing or quantified proof that this architecture improves reliability or reduces cost.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How curated data could support predictive maintenance

Predictive maintenance is the use case most directly tied to detecting changes before they become conventional alarms. Correlating session and performance data could help an AI system identify patterns such as abnormal state transitions, registration failures, traffic degradation, or quality-of-service drift.

In the proposed workflow, an AI agent would flag a risk and recommend a response. One example is scaling capacity for a 5G Standalone user-plane function (UPF) ahead of expected demand. This is a suggested operational scenario, not a demonstrated result: the article provides no deployment evidence, model accuracy, or incident-reduction measurements.

How curated data could improve capacity planning

Capacity planning could draw on historical signaling and traffic-volume patterns organized by market, month, and event type. With those dimensions linked, a CSP might investigate where demand is likely to put resources under pressure and use the forecast to inform capacity decisions and capital spending.

The usefulness of that approach would depend on whether the underlying data is representative, sufficiently fresh, and correctly correlated across relevant network domains. Fulwiler’s article does not report forecasting accuracy, cost savings, or a customer case study, so the proposal should not be read as evidence that curated data alone produces a reliable forecast.

How a third-party application might use network context

Fulwiler describes a hypothetical mobile-banking scenario involving an international transfer. The application needs context about subscriber location and session integrity. In the example, direct Home Location Register (HLR) queries and ingesting raw call-detail records or packet data are described as inadequate for the workload; a curation layer would instead expose a narrower, queryable view.

The article says this approach could provide “second-level resolution” and a better user experience. Those are claims within the author’s example, not independently measured outcomes: it identifies no bank, study design, baseline, or auditably documented implementation. The scenario illustrates a possible data-access pattern rather than proof of banking performance.

Where MCP fits in the proposed architecture

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is presented as a possible standardized gateway between a curation layer and AI agents or third-party applications. In principle, a gateway could let an application request a defined, contextual view rather than consume an unprocessed packet stream. The article does not document a production implementation or establish that MCP itself lowers costs, improves reliability, or guarantees interoperability.

For a CSP evaluating such an architecture, MCP is one integration consideration, not a substitute for deciding what data can be exposed, who may query it, and how its meaning and freshness are maintained. A practical assessment should examine:

Other possible applications—and the evidence boundary

The article also names digital twins, energy-efficient operations, dynamic slice management, closed-loop automation, security, and fraud detection as potential extensions. It does not evaluate these applications or supply measured results for them, so they are possibilities to investigate rather than validated benefits.

Fulwiler’s article includes several broad data-quality figures attributed to IDC, Fivetran, and Gartner, but gives no forecast year or publication year for those claims, and the original publications were not checked in the article review. They should not be treated here as independently verified current statistics. The article also offers an illustrative estimate of roughly nine petabytes of raw user-plane data per day for a 5G Standalone network with 10 million subscribers, close to one million transactions per second; that figure is the author’s example, not an independently verified benchmark.

The supportable conclusion is narrower than a claim that AI automatically benefits from more data: the proposed use cases depend on making network information contextual, correlated, and usable for a specific decision. The article sets out plausible workflows for CSPs, while leaving their accuracy, operational impact, and economics to be established in deployments.
