Steam Deck is the better choice for tunable performance, control remapping, and PC features. Switch 2 is the better choice if you want a lighter, console-first system with a sharper handheld panel, detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers, and straightforward local co-op. Nintendo officially lists Cult of the Lamb as supported on Switch 2, but says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch rather than advertising a separate enhanced mode. Steam Deck has stronger recent evidence: Valve marks the game Verified, and community reports commonly use 40–60 frames per second with adjustable settings.
Quick answer: which version should you buy?
Choose Steam Deck when your priority is the most adjustable version. You can change graphics settings, cap the frame rate, remap controls, use trackpads and rear buttons, access Steam features, and install PC modifications where supported. A 2026 compatibility report lists the game as Verified, with full controller support, readable interface text, and good default-settings performance. Community players in that report commonly settle between 40 and 60 fps, although those figures vary by configuration.
Choose Switch 2 when you value a simple console interface, detachable Joy-Con 2 play, Nintendo’s local multiplayer setup, and a sharper handheld screen. Nintendo’s store listing labels the game “Supported” and states: “Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That wording confirms compatibility but does not establish a Switch 2-specific resolution, frame-rate target, or visual upgrade.

The comparison is therefore not a proven same-build performance race. No cited source provides a controlled, side-by-side measurement of the current Switch 2 and Steam Deck versions. The practical decision is between Nintendo’s convenience and display hardware versus Steam Deck’s documented PC flexibility and adjustable performance.

What Nintendo officially confirms about the Switch 2 version
Compatibility is official, but an enhancement mode is not
Nintendo’s store page lists Cult of the Lamb as supported on Nintendo Switch 2 and specifically says game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. The page does not advertise a dedicated Switch 2 enhancement mode, a new performance target, higher-resolution assets, or a special graphics preset. Treat the Switch 2 release as a compatible Switch version unless a later update changes Nintendo’s listing.
The same listing gives the game a 1.8 GB file size on both Switch and Switch 2. It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and allows one or two players on one system. Massive Monster is identified as the developer, Devolver Digital as publisher, and 11 August 2022 as the release date.
Current content is broader than the launch build
Nintendo’s listing includes the Unholy Alliance update. That update adds local two-player co-op, with one player controlling the Lamb and the other controlling the Goat, along with tarot cards, relics, buildings, follower traits, quests, and other content. The listing also identifies Woolhaven DLC dated 22 January 2026. These additions matter if you are comparing a new purchase with memories of the original 2022 release: the available game is not limited to its launch campaign.
Performance: what each platform can actually prove
Switch 2 performance evidence is indirect and dated
The most concrete published Switch performance observations come from Nintendo Life’s 11 August 2022 review of the original Nintendo Switch version. It found performance generally consistent until busy scenes, when the frame rate became “real choppy.” The reviewer reported frame drops that could cause unnecessary damage or lost runs, one crash, several softlocks, and loading screens lasting up to 15 seconds.

- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
Those observations should be dated correctly. They describe the launch-era Switch build, not a controlled 2026 test of Switch 2 hardware. They are useful warning signs about the game’s original optimization, but they do not prove that the same drops, crashes, softlocks, or loading times still occur on Switch 2. Nintendo’s current listing confirms compatibility and consistent behavior with Switch; it does not publish a separate Switch 2 performance target.
Steam Deck has current Verified and community evidence
A 2026 Steam Deck compatibility report says Valve marks Cult of the Lamb as Verified. The report describes full controller support, legible interface text, and good performance at default settings. Its community sample commonly reports play between 40 and 60 fps. Those reports demonstrate headroom and adjustability, not a universal lock at either value. Different frame caps, display settings, background processes, and hardware revisions can change the result.
Steam Deck’s advantage is the ability to choose a target. A 40-fps cap can reduce power use while keeping motion smoother than 30 fps; a 60-fps cap favors responsiveness when the device and settings allow it. If a particular scene or effect causes a dip, you can lower settings or select a different cap instead of accepting a fixed console profile. The evidence supports that flexibility, not a promise that every moment reaches 60 fps.

The same 2026 report estimates battery life for this game at approximately 4 hours 54 minutes at 30 fps, 2 hours 53 minutes at 40 fps, and 2 hours 48 minutes at 60 fps. These are community/configuration estimates rather than laboratory measurements. Use them as planning figures, not guarantees; brightness, wireless activity, system updates, battery health, and your chosen power settings can alter runtime.
| Steam Deck target | Reported battery estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | About 4h54m | Longest estimate in the cited sample; useful when endurance matters more than motion smoothness. |
| 40 fps | About 2h53m | A middle-ground community estimate balancing responsiveness and battery use. |
| 60 fps | About 2h48m | Only about five minutes shorter than the cited 40-fps estimate; still configuration-dependent. |
Visuals and handheld displays
Switch 2 has the sharper native panel
TechRadar’s 31 August 2025 hardware comparison lists the Switch 2 handheld display at 1920×1080 with up to 120 Hz. It lists Steam Deck at 1200×800 with up to 90 Hz. On panel specifications alone, Switch 2 offers more pixels and higher refresh headroom. Text, menus, and the game’s flat illustrated artwork can look crisper on that native display when the software uses the available resolution effectively.
A sharper screen does not prove that Cult of the Lamb renders at 1920×1080 on Switch 2. Nintendo’s “behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” statement does not promise higher-resolution rendering or an asset overhaul. The safe conclusion is that Switch 2 supplies the more capable handheld panel, while the game-specific output remains undocumented as a dedicated enhancement.
The art style is readable on either screen
The game’s visual identity is its flat, hand-drawn, cute-but-horror presentation: bold shapes, expressive followers, and dark humor rather than photorealistic texture detail. Nintendo Life praised that art direction even while criticizing launch performance. Steam Deck’s 1280×800-class presentation has fewer pixels than Switch 2’s listed panel, but the stylized artwork and clear silhouettes remain well suited to a compact screen. The choice is more about panel sharpness and software tuning than about one platform having a different art direction.
TV and tabletop considerations
Switch 2 supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes according to Nintendo’s listing. That gives you a direct path from portable play to a television or tabletop session without leaving the console ecosystem. Steam Deck can also connect to a larger display through compatible accessories, but its appeal is the PC-style range of display and graphics controls rather than a fixed console mode. If your routine frequently changes between handheld and couch play, decide whether you prefer Nintendo’s mode switching or Steam’s configurable desktop-and-dock approach.

Controls and input flexibility
Switch 2: detachable Joy-Con 2 convenience
TechRadar describes Joy-Con 2 as usable attached to the console, detached for separate-hand play, or combined as a gamepad. It also reports added mouse-control functionality. For Cult of the Lamb, conventional sticks and buttons cover movement, attacks, dodges, menu navigation, and building tasks. Detachable controllers are especially useful when two people want to play locally without buying a second console.
The trade-off is that Nintendo’s console interface exposes fewer of the deep remapping and community-layout options associated with a PC handheld. You get an immediately understandable control scheme and Nintendo’s controller ergonomics, but not the same breadth of per-game input experimentation.
Steam Deck: more ways to map the same actions
Steam Deck combines dual trackpads, thumbsticks, a touchscreen, and rear buttons. TechRadar identifies those inputs as a major control advantage over conventional handheld layouts. You can keep the sticks for movement and combat, assign menus or frequently used actions to rear buttons, and use trackpads or the touchscreen for cursor-like interactions. Steam’s controller configuration system also allows more extensive remapping than a standard console profile.
That flexibility is valuable during crusades, where combat, resource collection, menus, and base management alternate quickly. It is also useful if you have a preferred accessibility layout or need to move an action away from a difficult button combination. The additional inputs are optional; players who prefer a traditional gamepad can ignore the trackpads and rear buttons.

Co-op and platform features
Local play on Switch 2
Nintendo documents one-system support for one or two players. The Unholy Alliance update makes that local option more substantial by letting one person play the Lamb and the other the Goat. This is the simplest choice for a household that wants to hand over a controller and start a shared session on one console.
Steam features on Deck
Steam’s official listing tags the game for controller support, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. Shared or split-screen play suits people already using Steam’s friend and streaming features; Remote Play Together can extend a local-style session to a friend through Steam’s supported remote-play system. Exact network quality depends on both players’ connections and the host setup, so it should not be treated as equivalent to an offline local session.
Both platforms therefore support shared play, but they emphasize different ecosystems. Switch 2 is the cleaner couch-console experience. Steam Deck offers more ways to involve remote friends and integrate the game with an existing PC library.

Portability, suspension, and everyday use
Switch 2 favors console simplicity
Switch 2 is the lighter, console-first option in this comparison. Its interface, game installation, controller pairing, and suspend/resume behavior are designed around Nintendo’s handheld-console workflow. If you want to close the system, carry it, and return without managing PC settings, that simplicity has practical value. You also avoid choosing between multiple graphics presets before a short play session.
Steam Deck favors PC ownership and configuration
Steam Deck gives you access to the broader Steam library and PC-style controls. You can change graphics options, frame caps, controller layouts, and power behavior, then keep those choices for future sessions. That control comes with more menus and more opportunities for a setting to affect battery life or image quality. Players who enjoy tuning hardware will see that as an advantage; players who want a console appliance may see it as unnecessary overhead.
Price context and what to verify
TechRadar’s 31 August 2025 list prices were $449.99 for Switch 2 and $399 for the base Steam Deck. These are dated list-price figures, not a guarantee of the price, stock, taxes, bundles, or regional availability when you buy. Check the current official store listings and your region before treating either number as a budget ceiling. The price difference should be weighed alongside storage, accessories, game ownership, and whether you already have a Steam library or Nintendo account.

How to choose by play style
Pick Switch 2 if these statements describe you
- You want the sharper 1920×1080 handheld panel and do not need proof of a special game render mode.
- You regularly play in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes and prefer a console-first interface.
- You want detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers for flexible solo play or local co-op.
- You value Nintendo’s straightforward suspend/resume routine more than deep graphics and input tuning.
- Your friends or family will play together on one system.
Pick Steam Deck if these statements describe you
- You want the strongest current evidence of a well-supported handheld PC version: Verified status, full controller support, and readable text.
- You want to select a 30, 40, or 60 fps target and adjust settings when performance or battery life matters.
- You will use trackpads, touchscreen input, rear buttons, or extensive remapping.
- You already own games on Steam or want Steam features such as Remote Play Together.
- You are comfortable trading some console simplicity for PC configuration freedom.
Practical setup guidance
Before starting on Switch 2
- Confirm that the store listing and your installed software include the current game updates, including the content you expect from Unholy Alliance or Woolhaven.
- Choose handheld, tabletop, or TV mode based on where you will play; Nintendo lists all three modes as supported.
- For two players, pair or attach the controllers you intend to use before launching the local session.
- If you encounter a crash, softlock, or unusually long load, record the game version and circumstances. The published launch-era review reported those problems on original Switch, but that evidence cannot establish whether your Switch 2 installation has the same issue.
Before starting on Steam Deck
- Install the latest game update and let Steam finish shader or system updates before judging performance.
- Begin with the default profile, since the 2026 compatibility report describes default-settings performance as good.
- Set a frame cap that matches your priority: 30 fps for the report’s longest battery estimate, 40 fps for a balance, or 60 fps for maximum responsiveness when sustained by your configuration.
- Use Steam Input to move actions to rear buttons or create a layout suited to your hands; keep the sticks for movement and combat if that feels most natural.
- If battery life is shorter than expected, lower the frame cap, reduce brightness, and check background downloads before changing multiple graphics settings at once.
Known uncertainties and how to read them
- No side-by-side benchmark: The available sources do not measure the same build on Switch 2 and Steam Deck under identical conditions.
- No Switch 2 frame-rate promise: Nintendo confirms support and Switch-consistent behavior but does not publish a dedicated target in the cited listing.
- Launch review age: Nintendo Life’s performance criticism is from 11 August 2022 and concerns the original Switch release.
- Community battery data: Steam Deck runtime figures are estimates from a 2026 compatibility report, not laboratory tests.
- Panel versus render resolution: Switch 2’s 1920×1080 display specification does not prove that the game renders at that resolution.
- Prices change: The cited $449.99 and $399 figures are TechRadar list prices from 31 August 2025 and may not match current regional pricing.
Final recommendation
For most technically minded handheld players, Steam Deck is the safer recommendation: its Verified status, current community evidence, adjustable frame-rate targets, broad control options, and Steam features make its strengths measurable and configurable. Select Switch 2 instead when your priorities are Nintendo’s lighter console experience, sharper 1080p handheld panel, detachable Joy-Con 2 controls, and easy one-system co-op. The Switch 2 version is officially supported, but it should be purchased for those platform advantages rather than on the assumption that it is a separately enhanced build.
