Verdict: The Cuisinart CPT-5A is a two-slice stainless-steel toaster identified by that exact model code in Australian retail and CHOICE records. It is listed as discontinued, and the retailer listing checked for this review showed no stock. If you find one, treat it as a remaining-stock or second-hand purchase: verify the model marking, condition, Australian/New Zealand plug, 230V/50Hz rating and return terms before paying. The retailer lists seven browning settings, extra-wide self-adjusting slots, AlwaysEven technology, high lift, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel controls, plus a removable crumb tray. CHOICE’s published comparison found performance very close to the Kmart Anko LD-T007, but detailed scores are membership-only and there is no meaningful owner-review trail for the CPT-5A.
What the Cuisinart CPT-5A is
CPT-5A is the model code for a two-slice Cuisinart toaster sold for the Australian market. Peter’s of Kensington lists it as “2 Slice Toaster CPT-5A Stainless Steel,” while CHOICE’s Australian product database also identifies CPT-5A. That exact code matters when you are searching clearance shelves, marketplace listings or old packaging: a similarly named American model is not proof that you have the same appliance.
The United States product page for CPT-160P1 describes a different toaster. Its six shade settings, 1.5-inch slots and three-year limited warranty cannot be transferred to CPT-5A. No exact-model manufacturer manual or specification sheet was located in the available material, so the feature list below is explicitly the Australian retailer’s description rather than an independently verified specification.
Key specifications reported for CPT-5A
| Item | What is reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Two slices | Designed for two pieces at a time; no four-slice capacity is indicated. |
| Finish | Stainless-steel body | The retailer’s product title and description identify a stainless-steel exterior. |
| Slot design | Two extra-wide, self-adjusting slots | The retailer claims the slots accommodate thicker slices and adjust around bread; exact slot width is not stated. |
| Shade control | Seven browning settings | Seven numbered choices are reported, but the temperature or timing for each setting is not published. |
| Evenness feature | “AlwaysEven technology” | The retailer says it is intended to produce consistent browning; that claim is not independently confirmed here. |
| Controls | Bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel | These functions are listed by the retailer. The exact heating pattern for bagel mode is not documented in the available exact-model material. |
| Lever | High-lift function | Useful for raising smaller items above the normal carriage position, according to the listed feature. |
| Cleaning | Removable crumb tray | The tray is reported as removable; check that it slides freely and is present if buying used. |
| Electrical market | Australian/New Zealand plug, 230V/50Hz design | This is the retailer’s market specification. Confirm the rating label on the actual unit before connecting it. |
| Current status | Discontinued in CHOICE’s database | Availability is therefore dependent on remaining inventory or used listings. |
Because these details come from a retailer listing, they should be read as a description of the advertised unit, not as laboratory measurements. In particular, the description does not provide a wattage, exact slot dimensions, cord length, exterior dimensions, weight, warranty term or repair-parts catalogue.

How the listed controls translate into everyday use
Seven browning settings
Seven shade positions give more adjustment than a simple light/medium/dark switch. In practice, you would start with a middle setting, note the result with your usual bread and move one step lighter or darker on the next cycle. Bread thickness, moisture, sugar content and whether a slice is frozen can change the result, so a number on the dial is not a universal colour standard. The available listing does not state the time or temperature associated with each position.
Extra-wide, self-adjusting slots
The retailer describes both slots as extra-wide and self-adjusting. That combination is intended for variable slice thicknesses, such as dense sourdough or a thick café-style cut, without requiring a separate width selector. Since no exact measurement is provided, inspect a display unit or ask the seller for the slot width if you regularly toast unusually thick bread.
AlwaysEven technology
“AlwaysEven technology ensures consistent and even browning results” is a product-description claim from the retailer. It signals the feature’s purpose, not a guaranteed outcome for every bread type. CHOICE’s independent comparison is more useful for judging real-world evenness than the marketing phrase alone.

Bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel
These four buttons cover common special cases: bagel mode for a bagel-shaped item, defrost for frozen bread, reheat for warming without a full fresh cycle, and cancel for stopping early. The exact side-to-side heating behaviour in bagel mode, the default timings and whether settings are remembered are not stated for CPT-5A. If those details matter to you, request the original manual from the seller rather than relying on documentation for another Cuisinart model.
High lift and crumb tray
A high-lift lever is useful when the top of a small slice sits below your fingertips after the carriage rises. The removable tray should make routine crumb removal easier than a fixed-base design. For a used toaster, check that the lever latches, releases and returns smoothly, and that the tray is not warped or missing.
What independent testing says
The clearest independent evidence comes from a CHOICE comparison of CPT-5A and Kmart’s Anko LD-T007. CHOICE described the two appliances as virtually indistinguishable in appearance and reported that their final scores were separated by one percentage point. That is a close result, not evidence that the two models are identical or that every buyer will get the same outcome.

| Comparison area | CHOICE’s reported result | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Final score | The models were one percentage point apart; the accessible summary does not show the numerical scores. | Overall performance was closely matched in that comparison. |
| Toasting evenness | Anko LD-T007 rated “good”; CPT-5A rated “OK”. | Anko had the advantage on uniformity in that test. |
| Multigrain bread | CPT-5A was a little ahead. | CPT-5A may be the more attractive choice if multigrain slices are a frequent part of your routine, subject to availability. |
| Cycle consistency | CPT-5A was a little ahead. | Repeated cycles were a relative strength for Cuisinart in the reported comparison. |
| Speed | Anko completed the toasting race in 2 minutes 35 seconds, 20 seconds faster than Cuisinart. | Anko had the shorter measured cycle in that test. |
| Price context | The article used $90 for the Cuisinart in a historical splurge/save pairing. | This is old comparison context, not a current Australian price or recommended resale value. |
CHOICE’s public product page identifies CPT-5A, but the detailed score breakdown is locked behind membership in the accessible result. It would be misleading to supply an overall score, individual numerical marks or a complete test methodology that is not visible there. The comparison should therefore be used for its published trade-offs—uniformity, multigrain performance, repeatability and speed—rather than as a full specification sheet.

- No hands-on inspection for this article: the physical finish, noise, lever feel and actual slot dimensions have not been independently examined here.
- No exact-model warranty confirmation: the three-year warranty shown for CPT-160P1 belongs to that separate US model and should not be applied to CPT-5A.
- No owner-consensus signal: the retrieved ProductReview.com.au directory entry shows no reviews for CPT-5A, so it cannot establish long-term reliability, failure rates or customer-service experience.
- No verified current price: the $90 figure is historical comparison context, and the checked retailer listing was unavailable.
- No confirmed replacement parts: compatibility of a crumb tray or other component from another Cuisinart model has not been established.
Availability in Australia: how to check a listing safely
Discontinued does not mean that every unit has disappeared. It means normal manufacturer distribution is no longer assured, so each listing needs more scrutiny than a current model in a major chain.
- Confirm the model code. Ask for a clear photograph of the rating plate or base showing “CPT-5A.” Do not accept a listing that only says “Cuisinart two-slice toaster.”
- Check the electrical label. For an Australian installation, look for the Australian/New Zealand plug and a 230V, 50Hz rating. A US plug or a different voltage marking is not an acceptable substitute without specialist electrical advice.
- Ask whether it is new, display stock or used. Remaining stock may have been stored for years; used units can have worn carriage mechanisms or hidden heat damage.
- Verify what is included. Confirm the crumb tray, power cord and any original documentation are present. Do not assume accessories from CPT-160P1 or another model fit.
- Read the return terms before payment. A seller’s return window and warranty, if any, are more important when the manufacturer has discontinued the model.
- Inspect the seller identity. Marketplace photographs, serial information and a physical Australian return address provide more assurance than a copied stock image alone.
- Test immediately if a return period applies. Run each slot, the lever and cancel control, then check the special modes with a safe bread load. Stop using the unit if the cord, plug or casing becomes abnormally hot or damaged.
A listing that cannot show the exact model marking, electrical rating or return policy should be treated as an unverified Cuisinart toaster rather than as a confirmed CPT-5A.

Electrical compatibility for Australian shoppers
The retailer says its appliance is fitted with Australian/New Zealand plugs and designed for 230V/50Hz. That is the relevant configuration for a normal Australian household, but the unit’s own rating label remains the final check because marketplace sellers can mix regional stock. Buyers importing into another country should compare the label with local voltage and frequency requirements and use only an appropriate, safety-approved solution. A travel plug adapter changes the pin shape; it does not convert voltage or frequency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How CPT-5A compares with the Anko LD-T007
The Anko LD-T007 is the most useful comparison in the available independent evidence because CHOICE tested it alongside CPT-5A. It is not a statement that the models share the same construction, controls or current availability. The practical choice depends on which performance characteristic matters most and which model you can buy with acceptable warranty protection.
| If your priority is… | The CHOICE comparison favoured… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| More even browning | Anko LD-T007 | Rated “good” for evenness versus “OK” for CPT-5A. |
| Multigrain bread | CPT-5A | Reported as a little ahead in that category. |
| Repeatability from cycle to cycle | CPT-5A | Reported as a little ahead for toasting consistency. |
| Shorter measured cycle | Anko LD-T007 | Finished in 2:35, 20 seconds ahead of Cuisinart in the cited test. |
| Simple purchasing and returns | Whichever has current, verifiable local stock | CPT-5A’s discontinued status makes seller terms and condition decisive. |
Because the published final scores were only one percentage point apart, the comparison does not justify paying a large premium solely for the Cuisinart badge. A clearly documented CPT-5A with a good return policy may still make sense for someone who values its reported multigrain and consistency results, while a currently supported alternative is the lower-risk choice for buyers who prioritise warranty and easy replacement.

How to judge a current alternative if CPT-5A is unavailable
Use the same decision criteria rather than matching a brand name. For a two-slice replacement, compare:
- Slot geometry: verify the measured width and length if you use thick sourdough, crumpets or bagels.
- Shade control: count the settings, then check whether the control is repeatable with your normal bread.
- Special modes: confirm whether bagel, defrost and reheat functions are separate buttons and how the manual says they operate.
- Low-slice retrieval: look for a genuine high-lift mechanism if you toast small pieces.
- Cleaning: make sure the crumb tray is removable and readily available as a replacement if it is damaged.
- Electrical and warranty details: choose the correct Australian plug and voltage, and prefer a seller with a clear local return process.
- Independent results: give more weight to measured evenness, consistency and speed than to unverified phrases such as “always even.”
This approach also prevents a common mistake: assuming that a newer Cuisinart model is an equivalent simply because it has two slots and a stainless finish. Model codes, electrical ratings and control layouts must match the specification you actually need.
Should you buy a remaining CPT-5A?
It can make sense when
- The base or rating plate clearly says CPT-5A.
- The unit has the Australian/New Zealand plug and 230V/50Hz marking.
- The price reflects discontinued or used status rather than an inflated “rare” premium.
- You receive a workable return period and can verify the lever, slots, controls and crumb tray.
- Your priorities align with the reported strengths in multigrain performance and cycle consistency.
Choose a current model instead when
- The seller cannot prove the exact model or electrical region.
- There is no return option, especially for used or display stock.
- You need a published warranty, readily available parts or predictable replacement stock.
- Even browning and faster cycles matter more to you than the CPT-5A’s reported advantages.
- The asking price approaches that of a current toaster with comparable controls and local support.
Final assessment
CPT-5A is a real Australian-market model, not a safe shorthand for every two-slice Cuisinart toaster. Its retailer-listed package is appealing on paper—seven shade settings, wide self-adjusting slots, high lift, four special functions and a removable tray—and CHOICE found it broadly competitive with the Anko LD-T007. The evidence is nevertheless narrow: the model is discontinued, detailed CHOICE scores are not publicly visible, owner reviews were absent from the directory checked, and the retailer feature list has not been independently verified. For an Australian buyer, exact-model identification, electrical compatibility, condition and return protection should decide whether a remaining unit is worth pursuing.
