To get started with CUDA, you need a CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPU, a compatible NVIDIA driver, and the CUDA Toolkit installed according to your operating system’s current instructions. Then build and run an official sample to confirm the setup works. The GPU, driver, Toolkit, and CUDA runtime are separate parts of the environment, and a newer Toolkit does not make an older GPU support newer hardware features.

What do you need to get started with CUDA?

CUDA is NVIDIA’s platform for computing on GPUs. A first working setup combines hardware with several software components:

  • NVIDIA GPU: The hardware that runs GPU work. Each GPU has a compute capability, or CC, expressed as a major/minor number such as X.Y. It describes hardware features and parameters.
  • NVIDIA driver: Software installed on the host operating system that enables GPU use. NVIDIA’s CUDA Programming Guide says, “The NVIDIA Driver can be thought of as the operating system of the GPU.” This is an analogy, not a literal description of the driver.
  • CUDA Toolkit: Development tools, headers, and libraries used to write, build, and analyze GPU software.
  • CUDA runtime: A library within the Toolkit that provides APIs and language extensions for common operations, including memory allocation, data transfers, and launching GPU kernels.

The driver and Toolkit are separate; installing one does not mean the other is present. You do not need to buy a GPU if you already have compatible NVIDIA hardware. If you are considering local CUDA practice, check the exact GPU’s compute capability and compatibility before purchasing; no one model is suitable for every system or budget.

Does your GPU support CUDA?

Look up the exact GPU model in NVIDIA’s maintained compute-capability list, then check NVIDIA’s current compatibility guidance for the Toolkit release and driver you plan to use. Do not treat compute capability and CUDA version as interchangeable: compute capability is a hardware feature level, while a CUDA version identifies a software platform or Toolkit release.

  • Original half height bracket matches with the low profile brackets make the Glorto GeForce GT 730 graphics card fit well with all PC tower, small form factor and HTPC(except micro form factor)

Compatibility depends on the relationship among the GPU architecture, driver, Toolkit, and application. A later Toolkit release cannot add hardware features that a GPU does not support, and an application may have its own compatibility requirements. Check NVIDIA’s current guidance for your exact hardware and software combination rather than relying on a universal minimum version.

How do you install the CUDA Toolkit?

Installation steps depend on your operating system and the CUDA release. Start with NVIDIA’s CUDA Quick Start Guide and follow the linked installation instructions for your platform. The CUDA Toolkit documentation hub also links to current installation, programming, compiler, sample, library, and learning resources.

  1. Identify your GPU and operating system. Confirm the exact GPU model and check its compute capability and compatibility with the intended driver and Toolkit.
  2. Choose the platform-specific instructions. Open the Quick Start Guide and the Windows or Linux installation guide that applies to your system and release.
  3. Install the driver and Toolkit as directed. Follow the guide’s sequence and requirements; do not assume the driver is always included with the Toolkit. For example, NVIDIA’s CUDA 13.4 Quick Start Guide says the Linux driver is no longer bundled with the Toolkit and must be installed separately. That statement is specific to Linux and CUDA 13.4.

Use the live guide for the commands and supported installation methods: they can change by operating system and release, so a fixed recipe may not fit your setup.

How do you know CUDA is working?

An installer finishing successfully is not enough to prove the full environment works. Build and run an official CUDA sample, following the instructions for your operating system in the Quick Start Guide.

NVIDIA’s guide describes installing a writable copy of CUDA Samples, building a sample such as nbody, and running the resulting executable. On Linux, run it from its directory so it can find dependent resources. The Windows guide also uses nbody as a verification route. Follow the current guide for the exact commands and paths.

  • If the sample builds and runs as expected, you have verified more than installation alone: the development tools and GPU execution path are working together for that sample.
  • If the sample fails, use the error and the platform guide to check the driver, Toolkit installation, GPU compatibility, and any required files or execution location. A failure does not by itself identify which component is responsible.

What should you learn after the first sample?

Use NVIDIA’s CUDA Toolkit documentation hub to move from setup into the CUDA Programming Guide and additional samples. Once you have working code to improve, consult the Best Practices Guide for optimization guidance rather than treating optimization as a prerequisite for a first run.
