A copper-centered cuboctahedral cluster can act as a reactive scaffold for an unusual kind of bonding called inverse coordination. In the 2018 report, a Taiwan–France research team first made a copper cluster with cuboctahedral geometry, then reacted it to obtain clusters in which sulfide, bromide, or chloride ions occupy exceptionally crowded coordination environments. Chemistry World described those products as having the highest coordination number observed at that time. The report text does not give the numerical coordination count, molecular formulas, reaction conditions, or evidence that the historical record still stands today.

What the 2018 report actually established

The work followed a clear structure-to-reactivity sequence. First, the scientists synthesized a copper-centered cluster arranged in a cuboctahedral geometry. The report described this precursor as the first copper-centred cluster reported to show that geometry. They then carried out further reactions that produced inverse-coordination clusters containing sulfur, bromine, or chlorine; the relevant anions were identified as sulfide, bromide, and chloride.

This sequence matters because the precursor was not merely an isolated structural curiosity. Its arrangement could be transformed into new clusters in which a main-group anion occupied the center of a metal-rich environment. That is the opposite of the arrangement most students first encounter in coordination chemistry, where a metal ion sits at the center and surrounding ligands donate electron pairs to it.

“The precursor is the first copper-centred cluster to show cuboctahedral geometry, and can be further reacted to give sulfur, bromine or chlorine inverse-coordination clusters with the highest coordination number ever observed.”

“Highest coordination number ever observed” is a historical claim about the state of the field described in that 2018 report. It should not be read as a verified present-day record, and the retrieved report text does not state the number itself.

What a cuboctahedral copper cluster is

The geometry

A cuboctahedron is a highly symmetrical polyhedron with triangular and square faces. In its ideal mathematical form, it has 12 vertices around a central point. When chemists describe a cluster as copper-centered and cuboctahedral, they are describing a molecular arrangement organized around a central copper position and a surrounding set of copper-containing sites that approximate this shape. The word describes the geometry, not a complete molecular formula.

Real molecules are not perfect textbook solids. Metal–metal distances can differ, atoms can shift away from ideal positions, and attached ligands can distort the shell. “Cuboctahedral” therefore identifies the dominant structural motif established for the precursor, rather than promising a flawless geometric model.

Why the shape is useful chemically

A compact, symmetric metal framework creates several closely spaced contact sites. That can provide a preorganized environment for a later reaction: an incoming atom or ion does not have to assemble an entire cluster from separate components if the copper scaffold already places many metal sites in a suitable arrangement. The cuboctahedral precursor thus supplies a platform whose connectivity can be redirected by reaction.

The report identifies the precursor’s geometry and its subsequent conversion, but it does not provide the exact copper count, ligand set, bond lengths, or distortion parameters in the retrieved text. Those details would be needed to reproduce the structure precisely or to compare it quantitatively with other copper clusters.

Inverse coordination versus ordinary coordination

Feature Conventional coordination picture Inverse-coordination cluster in this report
Central site A metal ion is surrounded by ligands or donor atoms. A main-group anion, such as sulfide, bromide, or chloride, occupies the interior of a metal-rich cluster.
Role of surrounding atoms Ligands donate electron density toward the central metal. Copper sites surround and interact with the central anion.
What coordination number counts The number of neighboring donor atoms or contacts assigned to the central metal. The number of metal contacts assigned to the central main-group ion; the report does not state the numerical values.
Structural challenge Many familiar complexes have well-established coordination geometries. Placing a relatively large anion inside a tightly packed metal framework can produce unusually high coordination.

“Inverse” does not mean that ordinary coordination rules have been discarded. It signals that the identity of the site being coordinated has changed: the anion is treated as the center whose contacts to surrounding copper atoms are analyzed. The same cluster can still contain conventional ligand-to-metal interactions elsewhere.

How the structure-to-reactivity sequence works

  1. Build the copper-centered precursor. The team synthesized a copper cluster with a cuboctahedral arrangement, reported as the first copper-centred cluster with that geometry.
  2. Use the precursor as a reactive scaffold. Further chemical reactions were performed on the cuboctahedral cluster. The retrieved account does not specify reagents, solvent, temperature, atmosphere, yields, or purification steps.
  3. Form inverse-coordination products. The reactions produced clusters in which sulfur, bromine, or chlorine appeared as sulfide, bromide, or chloride ions inside a copper-rich environment.
  4. Assign unusually high coordination. The surrounding copper atoms gave the central anions a coordination number characterized by Chemistry World as the highest then observed. No numerical count is supplied in the available text.

This ordering is important. The result was not presented as three unrelated compounds discovered independently. It was presented as a precursor-to-product relationship: a distinctive copper geometry enabled access to a different coordination regime for main-group anions.

What is known about sulfide, bromide, and chloride products

Anion named in the report What the report says What is not stated in the retrieved text
Sulfide Appears in an inverse-coordination cluster derived from the copper-centered cuboctahedral precursor. The numerical coordination number, formula, oxidation-state assignment, preparation conditions, and structural measurements.
Bromide Appears in an inverse-coordination cluster made through further reaction of the precursor. The numerical coordination number and any comparative ranking against the sulfide or chloride product.
Chloride Appears in an inverse-coordination cluster made through further reaction of the precursor. The numerical coordination number, detailed bonding description, and whether its value differs from the other anions.

The three anions are chemically different in size, polarizability, and charge distribution, so it is reasonable to expect that they may not produce identical structures. However, the retrieved report does not establish a product-by-product trend. It only identifies all three as members of the unusual inverse-coordination series.

Why unusually high coordination is notable

Crowding and geometry

Coordination numbers become difficult to increase because neighboring atoms need physical space and favorable bonding contacts. A compact metal shell can make many contacts possible, but crowding also introduces steric repulsion and geometric strain. A structure is therefore not assigned a high coordination number simply because many atoms are nearby; chemists must decide which contacts are genuine and chemically meaningful.

Bonding is not always a set of identical two-atom links

Metal clusters can distribute electron density across several atoms at once. Some contacts may be shorter or stronger than others, and a description based on multicenter or delocalized bonding may fit better than a drawing with one independent bond per neighbor. For that reason, a high coordination number is a structural classification, not a claim that every contact has the same bond order.

Main-group ions in a metal framework

Sulfide, bromide, and chloride are main-group anions rather than transition-metal centers. Their placement inside a copper framework challenges the usual separation between “metal center” and “ligand.” The inverse-coordination label highlights that the anion can be the site whose surrounding contacts are counted, even though the cluster’s electronic structure involves the entire assembly.

These points explain why the 2018 claim attracted attention without requiring a numerical record. The unusual feature is the topology and chemical role of the central anion, not simply the existence of another copper compound.

How to interpret the historical record claim

There are three separate statements that should not be conflated:

  • First cuboctahedral copper-centered cluster: the report described its precursor that way.
  • Inverse coordination of sulfide, bromide, and chloride: the report described products containing those anions in copper-rich clusters.
  • Highest coordination number then observed: Chemistry World attributed this qualitative record to the 2018 work.

The available account does not include a number for any coordination count. It also does not identify the primary paper, provide molecular formulas, or establish whether later publications have reported larger values. A careful article can therefore explain the significance of the claim while avoiding a fabricated statistic or an unsupported statement that the record remains current.

What evidence would be needed to verify the structures

For a cluster claim of this kind, structural verification normally requires more than a proposed drawing. A crystallographic model can locate the copper and main-group atoms and provide interatomic distances. Bonding and charge assignments may then be examined with complementary spectroscopic, analytical, or computational methods. The exact combination of methods, data quality, and refinement details is not given in the retrieved report text.

Coordination-number assignment also needs a stated criterion. One study may count contacts within a selected distance threshold; another may use bond metrics, electron-density analysis, or a chemically defined bonding model. Without the original paper’s definitions and measurements, readers should treat “high coordination number” as the report’s qualitative conclusion rather than reconstructing a number from the shape alone.

Why the precursor-to-product strategy matters

Preorganization instead of random assembly

Cluster synthesis often depends on controlling how many metal atoms join, how they are connected, and which small ions or ligands are incorporated. A preorganized cuboctahedral copper framework can narrow the range of structures available to a subsequent reaction. That is a general design idea: make a scaffold with a useful arrangement first, then alter its composition or internal occupant.

Access to coordination environments that ordinary complexes do not offer

Many textbook coordination compounds place a central metal in an environment of two, four, six, or another familiar number of donors. A metal-rich cluster can surround an anion with substantially more contacts because the surrounding atoms belong to a connected framework rather than to a single, isolated ligand shell. The reported sulfide, bromide, and chloride products illustrate that possibility.

A bridge between cluster chemistry and main-group chemistry

The work also blurs a common division of the subject. Copper cluster chemistry supplies the metal framework, while sulfur, bromine, and chlorine provide the main-group centers whose coordination is analyzed. Studying both parts together can reveal bonding patterns that are hard to recognize in a conventional metal–ligand complex.

Limits on what can be concluded

  • The retrieved text does not state the coordination number for sulfide, bromide, or chloride.
  • It does not provide molecular formulas, ligand identities, reaction conditions, yields, or characterization data.
  • It does not identify the primary research paper in the material available here.
  • It does not establish that the 2018 “highest coordination number” claim remains a current world record.
  • It does not show that the three anions have equal coordination numbers or identical geometries.

Those limits do not erase the central result. They define its proper scope: a reported copper-centered cuboctahedral precursor was converted into inverse-coordination clusters containing sulfide, bromide, or chloride, and the 2018 account characterized their coordination as exceptionally high for that time.

Key takeaways

  • A cuboctahedral copper cluster is a copper-containing framework organized around the highly symmetrical cuboctahedron motif.
  • The reported precursor was described as the first copper-centred cluster with cuboctahedral geometry.
  • Reactions of that precursor produced inverse-coordination clusters in which sulfide, bromide, or chloride occupied the metal-rich interior.
  • Inverse coordination counts contacts to the central anion, reversing the usual metal-at-the-center picture.
  • Chemistry World’s 2018 report called the coordination number the highest then observed, but supplied no numerical count in the available text and does not prove that the record still stands.
