The three-key combination is Ctrl+Alt+Delete, but on Windows 10 and Windows 11 it does not directly restart the computer. It opens the security screen, where you can access options such as Task Manager. To restart Windows normally, choose Start > Power > Restart.
What does Ctrl+Alt+Delete do?
In Windows 10 and Windows 11, pressing Ctrl, Alt, and Delete together opens the Windows security screen. Microsoft describes that screen as a place to lock the desktop, switch users, sign out, change a password, or open Task Manager. It is a route to security and system options, not a documented direct-restart shortcut. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference lists the shortcut’s function.
How to restart Windows normally
- Save open work if you can; a restart should not be assumed to preserve unsaved changes.
- Open Start.
- Select Power > Restart. Microsoft documents this as the normal restart route for Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Restart (reboot) your PC.
If the screen is blank or Windows is unresponsive
A blank-screen recovery is different from a routine restart. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance suggests trying Ctrl+Alt+Delete if the security screen appears. From there, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer if it is available. This restarts the Windows interface process; it is not the same as rebooting the computer. What “warm boot” means here
“Warm boot” is the wording used in the question, but it is not a precise description of what Ctrl+Alt+Delete does in current Windows: the shortcut opens the security screen. Use “open the security screen” for the key combination and “restart” for the Start-menu action to distinguish the two outcomes clearly.
Does the shortcut work the same way on every computer?
The steps here are specifically supported for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish how the shortcut behaves across other operating systems, so do not assume the Windows instructions apply to every computer.
