Use CSS transitions for a simple dialog fade or transform when your dialog primitive exposes entering and exiting states and keeps the element mounted until the exit finishes. Choose an animation library when you need presence management, coordinated effects, or a declarative API that would otherwise require custom mount and unmount logic. The decisive issue is lifecycle: if React removes the dialog immediately on close, there is no element left for CSS to animate.

The short answer

For one self-contained effect, CSS is usually the clearest implementation. A dialog can transition opacity, a small scale change, or a vertical offset with a few rules. That approach is appropriate only when the overlay implementation exposes a state you can style and handles the close lifecycle correctly.

A library becomes justified when it solves a concrete problem: retaining a component during its exit animation, coordinating several elements, sequencing stages, or expressing dynamic animation values in React. Motion for React provides this presence handling through AnimatePresence. React’s ViewTransition API is another option, but its exact availability and behavior depend on the React version used by your project.

Situation Most practical choice Reason
One fade or small transform and the primitive exposes enter/exit states CSS transition or keyframes Few moving parts; styling stays in CSS while the primitive manages removal.
Closing currently unmounts the dialog immediately A presence-aware primitive or animation library The element must remain mounted for an exit animation to run.
Several children must move in a coordinated sequence Animation library Declarative variants, sequencing, and shared presence state reduce custom lifecycle code.
Project is evaluating React’s native transition API ViewTransition, after a version check React documents enter and exit transitions, CSS customization, and Web Animations API callbacks, but support is version-sensitive.

Why dialog exits are a lifecycle problem

Opening and closing are different operations

On open, React can render a dialog in an initial visual state and then let a transition move it to its visible state. Closing is harder because many components represent a closed dialog by removing it from the tree immediately. Once unmounted, the element has no computed style, so a CSS transition cannot play.

An implementation therefore needs two distinct moments: a request to close and the eventual removal of the dialog. The exit animation occupies the interval between them. Your dialog primitive may already provide that interval; if it does not, you must add presence handling yourself or use a tool that supplies it.

What the overlay implementation still owns

Animation does not replace dialog behavior. The primitive remains responsible for opening and closing state, focus handling, dismissal rules, the backdrop, and the relationship between the dialog and the rest of the page. The animation layer should not make the dialog permanently unavailable to keyboard or pointer users while it is leaving.

Check the primitive’s documentation for its close behavior rather than assuming that every React dialog supports delayed removal. The React Aria documentation describes entering and exiting states for supported overlays and says the component waits for animations to finish before removal. That guarantee applies to the supported components documented there, not automatically to every dialog package.

CSS transitions: the lean option for a simple effect

When CSS is a good fit

  • The effect is limited to properties such as opacity, transform, or another self-contained visual change.
  • The dialog or overlay component exposes a reliable entering state and an exiting state.
  • The component keeps the node mounted until the exit transition or keyframe animation completes.
  • You do not need JavaScript to calculate a sequence or coordinate many independent elements.

Motion’s own getting-started guidance makes the same distinction: “For simple, self-contained effects (like a color change on hover) a standard CSS transition is a lightweight solution.” That is vendor guidance rather than an independent performance benchmark, but it is a useful boundary for deciding whether a dependency solves a real problem. See Motion for React’s documentation.

State-based CSS with an overlay primitive

The selectors below illustrate the shape of an implementation. Replace the example attributes with the exact selectors documented by your dialog primitive. React Aria describes an entering state as the start of an entry animation and an exiting state as the end of an exit animation.

.dialog {
  opacity: 1;
  transform: translateY(0) scale(1);
  transition: opacity 180ms ease, transform 180ms ease;
}

/* The primitive applies this state at the start of entry. */
.dialog[data-entering] {
  opacity: 0;
  transform: translateY(8px) scale(.98);
}

/* The primitive applies this state while the node is leaving. */
.dialog[data-exiting] {
  opacity: 0;
  transform: translateY(8px) scale(.98);
}

The normal rule defines the settled state. The entering rule supplies the initial style; once the primitive removes that state, the transition moves the dialog to the normal rule. The exiting rule supplies the destination style while the node remains mounted. The timing value is a design choice, not a universal requirement; keep it consistent with the duration your overlay implementation observes when deciding that removal is complete.

Transitions versus keyframes

Use a transition when the dialog moves between two states and the browser can interpolate the properties directly. A keyframe animation is useful when the effect has several stages, such as a short overshoot before settling. React Aria documents support for both CSS transitions and keyframe animations for supported components. Whichever form you choose, verify that the primitive waits for the relevant animation to finish; otherwise the final frames can be cut off by unmounting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where the CSS approach can fail

  • Immediate unmount: the close handler sets the dialog to false and removes it before the exit style can be observed.
  • Unknown state names: a selector such as [data-exiting] does nothing if the primitive uses a class or a different attribute.
  • Backdrop mismatch: the panel fades out but the backdrop disappears immediately, producing a visually abrupt close.
  • Transitioning the wrong property: layout properties can cause unwanted movement; use the properties the design actually needs and test the resulting interaction.
  • Timing disagreement: a CSS duration and the primitive’s removal detection do not match, so the animation is shortened or the dialog remains mounted after it looks finished.

The fix is to inspect the component’s documented lifecycle and state selectors first, then test both opening and closing with the browser’s rendered styles. Do not infer lifecycle support from the presence of a transition declaration alone.

Animation libraries: presence handling and richer orchestration

What Motion for React adds

Motion documents entry animation with initial and animate, and exit animation with exit together with AnimatePresence. The presence component keeps a child in the DOM while its exit animation runs, allowing React state to control visibility without writing a separate delayed-unmount mechanism.

import { AnimatePresence, motion } from 'motion/react';

function Dialog({ open, onClose }) {
  return (
    <AnimatePresence>
      {open && (
        <motion.div
          key='dialog'
          role='dialog'
          aria-modal='true'
          initial={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
          animate={{ opacity: 1, y: 0, scale: 1 }}
          exit={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
        >
          {/* Dialog content and the primitive's focus behavior go here. */}
        </motion.div>
      )}
    </AnimatePresence>
  );
}

In this pattern, changing open removes the JSX branch from React’s render result, but AnimatePresence retains the exiting child long enough for the exit values to apply. The stable key identifies the entering and leaving instance; use a key strategy that matches the way your dialog can be reopened.

When a library earns its place

  • The current primitive does not delay removal and implementing that delay would duplicate lifecycle code.
  • The panel, backdrop, and nested content need coordinated entry and exit values.
  • Animation values depend on React state, direction, or measured conditions.
  • You need the same declarative presence pattern in several parts of the interface.

A library is not automatically better because it uses JavaScript. Its value is the lifecycle and animation model it provides. If the dialog already supplies correct entering and exiting states and the effect is a single fade, adding a dependency may solve no concrete problem.

Responsibilities that remain outside Motion

AnimatePresence handles presence for the animated child; it does not define your dialog’s focus trap, escape-key policy, click-outside behavior, or screen-reader labeling. Keep those concerns in the dialog primitive and verify that they continue to work while the exit animation is running. If the primitive itself unmounts its content before Motion can retain it, place the presence boundary around the component that actually remains in the tree or use the primitive’s supported transition mechanism.

React ViewTransition: a native API to evaluate carefully

React’s reference documents enter and exit transitions when a ViewTransition is added to or removed by a component during a Transition. It describes CSS customization through generated classes and imperative customization through Web Animations API callbacks. This can be attractive when the project wants React’s transition model rather than a third-party animation abstraction.

The API is version-sensitive. Confirm that the React release, renderer, and target browsers used by your application support the exact ViewTransition behavior before designing a dialog around it. The current reference is React’s ViewTransition documentation.

How to assess it for a dialog

  1. Check the project’s React version against the API reference and confirm that the build can import and render ViewTransition.
  2. Identify the state update that adds or removes the dialog and ensure it occurs inside the Transition mechanism required by the API.
  3. Choose whether CSS classes are sufficient or whether a Web Animations API callback is needed for dynamic control.
  4. Test the close path with focus, dismissal, and backdrop behavior, not only the visual frames.

Do not treat ViewTransition as a drop-in replacement for an accessible dialog primitive. It supplies a transition mechanism; it does not by itself define the dialog’s semantics or interaction policy.

CSS, Motion, and ViewTransition compared

Decision factor CSS states on a supported primitive Motion for React React ViewTransition
Exit removal Handled by the primitive when it waits for exit completion. AnimatePresence retains the child during exit. Documented for components added or removed during a Transition; verify release support.
Simple fade or transform Strong fit. Works, but may add abstraction beyond the need. Possible, subject to API and browser support.
Coordinating several animated parts Requires carefully shared states and CSS. Declarative values and presence coordination are the main advantage. Can be customized with CSS or Web Animations API; exact implementation depends on the React version.
Where animation is declared Stylesheets or component styles. React props such as initial, animate, and exit. CSS classes or Web Animations API callbacks described by React.
Bundle-size or runtime advantage Not quantified in the cited documentation. Not quantified in the cited documentation. Not quantified in the cited documentation.
Comparative accessibility outcome Not established by the cited documentation. Not established by the cited documentation. Not established by the cited documentation.

The table deliberately separates documented capabilities from claims that have not been quantified. There is no reliable dialog-specific performance, bundle-size, adoption, or accessibility comparison in the cited material, so a project should measure its own build and test its own component behavior.

A practical implementation workflow

1. Inspect the dialog primitive before choosing an animation tool

  1. Locate the close handler and determine whether it merely changes an open value or immediately removes the dialog component.
  2. Find the documented entering and exiting selectors, if any.
  3. Confirm whether the primitive delays removal until CSS transitions or keyframes finish.
  4. Record which element owns the backdrop, focus behavior, and dismissal events.

If the primitive provides all four lifecycle pieces, begin with CSS. If it removes the node immediately or exposes no usable exit state, evaluate a presence-aware solution.

2. Build the CSS version first for a two-state effect

  1. Define the settled dialog style.
  2. Define the initial entering style and the final exiting style.
  3. Apply the selectors supplied by the primitive rather than inventing attribute names.
  4. Set transition properties and duration in one place so the lifecycle can observe them consistently.
  5. Repeat the same state treatment for the backdrop if it should fade with the panel.

Keep the first version limited to opacity and transform. Add more properties only when the design requires them; every additional property is another value to test during entry, exit, interruption, and reopening.

3. Add Motion only for a demonstrated lifecycle or orchestration need

  1. Wrap the conditional dialog child in AnimatePresence.
  2. Give the animated child a stable key.
  3. Set explicit initial, animate, and exit values.
  4. Keep semantic attributes and focus management in the dialog implementation.
  5. Test a close followed quickly by a reopen so that an old exiting instance cannot interfere with the new one.

4. Treat ViewTransition as a version-gated option

  1. Verify the React release and the API surface in the official reference.
  2. Confirm that the dialog’s add and remove operations occur in the required Transition.
  3. Start with CSS customization through the documented classes.
  4. Use Web Animations API callbacks only when CSS cannot express the needed behavior.
  5. Keep a fallback path if the target environment cannot use the selected API.

Interaction and accessibility checks

Animation choice does not establish an accessibility outcome by itself. The available documentation does not provide a comparative accessibility study of CSS transitions, Motion, and ViewTransition for dialogs. Test the component behavior directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keyboard close: Escape or the documented close command should still work while the dialog is visible and while a close is being requested.
  • Focus: opening should move focus according to the primitive’s contract; closing should return it to the appropriate trigger after the dialog is actually gone.
  • Dismissal: clicking the backdrop or another outside-dismissal mechanism should not be blocked by an exiting layer that is visually transparent but still intercepts events.
  • Semantics: retain the dialog role, accessible name, and modal relationship for the entire period in which the dialog is presented to assistive technology.
  • Reduced motion: the cited sources do not establish reduced-motion behavior. Add a project-approved prefers-reduced-motion policy and verify that it shortens or removes movement without breaking removal timing.
  • Interruption: test rapid open-close-open sequences and navigation away during an exit so that focus and state do not become stranded.

Common failure modes and fixes

The dialog flashes instead of easing in

The entering style may be applied after the browser has already painted the settled style, or the selector may not match the primitive’s actual state. Inspect the rendered element and verify that the initial state is present before the transition begins.

The dialog disappears without an exit

React is probably unmounting it immediately. Move the animation boundary to a component that remains mounted, enable the primitive’s documented exit handling, or use a presence mechanism such as AnimatePresence.

The exit animation runs, but the overlay remains interactive

An element can be visually transparent while still receiving pointer events or retaining focus. Decide when interaction should be disabled, and coordinate that state with the primitive rather than relying on opacity alone.

Motion’s exit prop appears to be ignored

Check that the child is actually inside AnimatePresence, that its key is stable, and that the conditional branch is being removed when open changes. If a parent primitive unmounts the entire subtree first, Motion cannot retain a child that no longer exists in its own tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ViewTransition works in one environment but not another

Recheck the React version, renderer, and target browser support. The React reference describes the API, but exact availability is release-sensitive; do not assume that a successful experiment in one setup guarantees support across your deployment targets.

How to make the final choice

Choose CSS when the primitive already solves presence

Select CSS when the desired effect is a small, self-contained fade or movement and the overlay component exposes documented entering and exiting states with delayed removal. This keeps animation declarations close to the visual design and avoids writing a second lifecycle system.

Choose Motion when presence or coordination is the requirement

Select Motion when the missing capability is retaining the component during exit, coordinating several animated pieces, or expressing state-dependent values declaratively. The dependency is easier to justify when it replaces custom lifecycle code used in more than one place.

Choose ViewTransition only after compatibility validation

Select React ViewTransition when the project deliberately targets its API, has verified the React release and runtime support, and benefits from the documented CSS or Web Animations API customization. It should be evaluated as a version-dependent platform capability, not assumed to be universally available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable decision sequence is therefore: inspect removal behavior, try CSS for a genuinely two-state effect, add a library when it solves a specific presence or orchestration problem, and validate every option with real close, focus, dismissal, interruption, and reduced-motion tests.
