Use Flexbox when items need to flow and share space along one axis—a row or a column. Use CSS Grid when items need coordinated placement across rows and columns. Both can be responsive, and they can be nested together; choose by the relationships your layout needs to preserve, not by the size of the component or page.

How are CSS Grid and Flexbox different?

Question Flexbox CSS Grid
How many dimensions does it coordinate? One axis at a time: a row or a column. Two dimensions: rows and columns together. MDN explains the distinction.
What guides the layout? Content and available space influence item sizing and how items grow, shrink, align, or distribute along the chosen axis. You define tracks, then place items into them or let auto-placement fill the grid. This is often described as layout-in rather than Flexbox’s content-out approach. MDN’s layout-method comparison covers both approaches.
What happens when items wrap? Each flex line distributes its items independently; positions on one line are not coordinated with items on another. Shared tracks coordinate item positions across rows and columns. MDN describes how the methods relate.
Can it be used inside the other? Yes. A Flexbox container can be a Grid item. Yes. A Grid container can be a Flex item. CSS-Tricks discusses why Grid does not replace Flexbox.

When should you use Flexbox?

Choose Flexbox when the primary relationship among items runs in one direction. It is a natural fit for a navigation row, toolbar, button group, or vertically stacked controls when those items need to flow, align, or share available room along that row or column. These are common examples, not exclusive rules.

Flexbox can wrap items, but its lines do not form a shared two-dimensional track system. When the layout’s priority is how items relate along a single axis, that behavior is useful; when positions across separate lines must line up, consider Grid instead.

When should you use CSS Grid?

Choose Grid when the design depends on coordinated rows and columns—for example, a card or gallery layout whose columns should stay aligned across multiple rows. Define tracks to express the shared structure, then place items explicitly or let Grid auto-place them.

If you find yourself assigning widths to Flexbox items mainly to force wrapped rows to line up with one another, reconsider whether shared Grid tracks better represent the design. The deciding factor is the alignment relationship, not whether the component is large.

Can you combine Grid and Flexbox?

Yes. Use each method for the part of the layout it handles well. For example, Grid can arrange a page’s regions while a navigation group inside one region uses Flexbox. A Grid item can itself be a Flexbox container, and a Flex item can itself be a Grid container. CSS-Tricks covers this complementary relationship; O’Reilly’s Grid Layout chapter also treats Grid as one layout method among others.

How do Grid and Flexbox fit into responsive design?

Both methods can support responsive layouts. Start with the available space and the content, then add a breakpoint when the content or component begins to look cramped or otherwise unsuitable—not simply to target every device size individually. MDN’s responsive design guidance describes adapting layouts where the content needs it.

Check the browser versions and CSS features your project must support before relying on a particular behavior. CSS-Tricks reported that unprefixed Grid had shipped broadly in major browsers in March 2017, but that is historical context, not a current feature-by-feature compatibility assessment. CSS-Tricks’ 2022 article gives that rollout context.
