The CSS masonry debate has a direction: CSS Grid Level 3 now describes grid-lanes, and WebKit says the CSS Working Group chose the Grid Lanes approach. It remains work in progress, not a promise of stable support across browsers. The change reframes the question in Bytes #340—whether masonry belongs in Grid—as a question about how the emerging Grid Lanes model will develop and become usable.

What was the “to grid or not to grid” debate?

Bytes #340, published November 11, 2024, considered how CSS should express masonry-style layouts: arrangements where items pack together like bricks rather than lining up in uniform rows. The pattern was often built with JavaScript, and browser teams disagreed about the CSS approach.

The debate was not about whether ordinary CSS Grid should exist. It was about whether masonry should be a separate layout mode or an extension of Grid. Each option had a different cost in clarity, complexity, and compatibility.

A separate masonry display mode

One proposal used a new display value, display: masonry. A distinct mode could have defaults tailored to masonry and might be easier to learn and configure on its own. The tradeoff was potential duplication between the Grid and masonry specifications, with responsive design becoming harder to reason about across two related layout systems.

Masonry integrated with Grid

The alternative described in the issue extended Grid, including a proposal to add collapsed to grid-template-rows and grid-template-columns. Keeping the feature within Grid could allow progressive enhancement as implementations developed. But adding special behavior to existing property values risked making Grid harder to learn and configure.

Those were the proposals and tradeoffs as the November 2024 issue described them; neither proposal’s syntax should be mistaken for the eventual direction.

What is CSS Grid Lanes?

The current CSS Grid Layout Module Level 3 Editor’s Draft describes “grid lanes layout,” also known as masonry or waterfall layout. It defines grid-lanes as an inner display type. WebKit’s December 19, 2025 article presents display: grid-lanes as the syntax, and its January 2026 update says the CSS Working Group chose Grid Lanes after considering the earlier proposals.

The later name and syntax mark a direction for standards work; they do not mean that the 2024 proposals became stable CSS features unchanged. The draft also records that the item-* unified-flow proposal was dropped.

Can you use display: grid-lanes now?

The evidence supports only a dated, limited availability claim: WebKit said readers could try the feature in Safari Technology Preview 234 when its December 2025 article was published. That does not establish support in current stable Safari, or broad stable support across browsers. The CSS Grid Level 3 document is still an Editor’s Draft.

If you are evaluating the feature, check the current compatibility information for the exact browser and version you intend to support before relying on it. Treat the draft syntax as experimental standards work, and plan a suitable fallback for users whose browser does not implement it. The sources establish neither a cross-browser support baseline nor a universal production-ready date.

What should developers take from the change?

  • The original question was about the model. The 2024 discussion weighed a standalone masonry mode against integrating the layout with Grid; it was not a debate about replacing ordinary Grid.
  • The direction now has a name. The Level 3 draft calls the layout Grid Lanes and defines the grid-lanes inner display type.
  • The tradeoffs have not disappeared. A separate mode could avoid overloading Grid concepts, while integration could keep related layout behavior together. The selected direction is a standards decision, not proof that every implementation or authoring question is settled.
  • Implementation status is separate from specification status. A working draft and a feature in a technology preview do not establish stable, interoperable availability.
