CSS clip-path lets you show an image through a circle, oval, inset rectangle, or custom silhouette without changing the source image. Choose a basic shape for a simple crop; use a polygon or path when you need a more specific outline, and check support for the exact syntax against your target browsers.
What CSS clip-path does
The clip-path property defines which part of an element is visible; pixels outside the clipping region are hidden from view. The image file itself is not destructively edited. MDN describes the property as creating “a clipping region that sets what part of an element should be shown.”
The clipping boundary is mapped to a reference box. If you do not specify a geometry box, the default is border-box. That means the image element’s dimensions affect where the shape falls. To control which part of a photo appears inside that boundary, set the image’s sizing and crop separately—for example, with dimensions and object-fit.

Apply a circular or oval crop
Use circle() when the visible region should be round. The following example gives the image a square box, keeps its contents covered, and clips it to a circle:

}The circle’s size and placement depend on the reference box. For a non-square image box, use ellipse() to specify separate horizontal and vertical radii when an oval is the intended result. If the subject is off-center, adjust the image’s positioning separately from the clipping boundary.

Trim a rectangle with inset()
inset() clips a rectangular region by setting how far its edges sit inside the reference box. It is useful when you want to trim selected margins but keep a rectangular outline. Choose it instead of a polygon when the crop is still a rectangle; the simpler syntax expresses that intent directly.
Build a custom silhouette with polygon()
A polygon is a series of coordinate pairs, one for each vertex, in order around the outline. Percentages make those points scale with the reference box, so the silhouette can follow the element’s dimensions. This diamond uses four points:

}The points start at the top center, then go to the right center, bottom center, and left center. For other straight-edged shapes, define each corner or turn in sequence. See MDN’s polygon() reference for the syntax.
When to use path() or an SVG clip source
For outlines too intricate to express conveniently as a few basic-shape parameters or polygon vertices, CSS also supports path-based clipping and references to SVG <clipPath> sources. These techniques make it possible to define more complex silhouettes, but their details and browser support depend on the specific syntax. Check compatibility for the exact approach you choose before relying on it in production.

Check browser support for the exact shape
MDN marks clip-path as widely available across browsers since January 2020, but support may differ for individual values and functions. Verify the compatibility data for the specific shape syntax—especially a less familiar or newer option—and test in the browsers your site needs to serve. A broad property-availability statement does not guarantee identical support for every function.
