Run a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server with cs2 -dedicated (or Linux’s cs2.sh -dedicated), then use a Game Server Login Token for a public listing. Set identity and access with hostname, sv_password and rcon_password; control matches with mp_ commands; and host Workshop content with host_workshop_map or host_workshop_collection. Exact cvar names, defaults and Workshop behavior can change with updates, so check Valve’s current CS2 dedicated-server and command documentation before committing a production configuration.
This guide separates one-time launch options, persistent configuration and live console/RCON actions so you know where each command belongs, what it changes and how to recover when a setting does not behave as expected.

What a CS2 server command actually controls
CS2 administration is split among three command surfaces:

A leading plus sign on a launch line means “execute this command after startup.” A command entered interactively does not need that plus sign. Keep secrets out of shell history and shared configuration files wherever your hosting platform provides a protected secret field.

Install and start the dedicated server
Install or update with SteamCMD
The CS2 dedicated server uses Steam app ID 730, the same app ID as the client. In SteamCMD, run:

Start on Windows
Launch the cs2 executable with the -dedicated switch. Without that switch, the normal game client starts instead. A minimal public-server example is:
cs2.exe -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount <TOKEN> +map de_dust2Replace <TOKEN> with the Game Server Login Token issued for your server. Choose a startup map that exists in the installed build; an invalid map can leave the process running without a playable session.
Start on Linux
Valve’s Linux instructions use the cs2.sh script. The equivalent pattern is:

Server identity, access and authentication
hostname: the name players see
Set hostname in your persistent configuration or at the console to control the browser name. Use a clear name that identifies the community, region or ruleset without pretending to be an official Valve server.

hostname "Community EU — Competitive"Quotes are useful when the name contains spaces or punctuation. If the old name remains visible, issue the command again from the live console and allow the server browser time to refresh.
sv_password: private-server access
sv_password places a join password on the server. It is appropriate for scrims, events and testing. An empty value removes the password:

sv_password "your-join-password"Do not confuse this with the RCON password. The former controls who may join; the latter controls who may administer the running server.
rcon_password: remote administration
Set a strong, unique rcon_password in the server configuration. Anyone who obtains it can issue administrative commands, so never publish it in a public Discord message, startup screenshot or paste.

A public server needs a GSLT supplied at launch with +sv_setsteamaccount <TOKEN>. Treat the token as a credential: do not commit it to a public repository, and revoke or replace it if exposed.
Valve’s older Workshop documentation says a GSLT is restricted to one dedicated-server instance and recommends -net_port_try 1 when multiple instances might otherwise reuse a token. That text is from the CS:GO era; confirm the restriction and the recommended option on the current CS2 page before relying on it for a multi-instance host.

Choose a game mode before loading a map
CS2 exposes separate variables for game type and mode. Valve’s game-mode documentation identifies these controls:
game_typeselects the broad game family.game_modeselects the mode within that family.sv_game_mode_flagsapplies mode-specific flags.sv_skirmish_idselects a skirmish variant when the chosen mode supports one.
Set the required values before loading the map, then load a map so the mode is applied to the new session. CS2 also supports game_alias shortcuts; for example, game_alias competitive sets the corresponding type and mode together. Because aliases and mode IDs can change, use the current Valve server page as the authority for the values in your build.

map de_dust2If a mode appears wrong after changing cvars, issue the mode command first and reload the map. Changing a variable after a round has started may not rebuild all rules for the current session.
Match flow and warmup commands
Restart a match safely
mp_restartgame <seconds> schedules a match restart after the specified delay. A short delay gives connected players a visible warning:
mp_restartgame 5Use this instead of abruptly killing the process. A process restart also re-runs startup commands and can create avoidable token or map-loading problems.
Start, end and time warmup
These commands control the warmup phase:
mp_warmup_startstarts warmup immediately.mp_warmup_endends warmup and proceeds toward the match.mp_warmuptime <seconds>sets the warmup duration.

mp_warmuptime 60Changing mp_warmuptime can restart warmup, according to commonly documented behavior. Warn players before applying it during an event.

Do not copy a claimed default for mp_freezetime from an older guide. Published values differ, so verify the default on Valve’s current page or query the live server before changing it.
mp_buy_anywhere is frequently used for practice configurations, but whether it requires sv_cheats 1 and how that requirement is enforced should be confirmed for your current build. A safe procedure is to test it on a password-protected server, check the console response, and keep it out of a public competitive configuration unless the current documentation confirms the behavior.

Map changes and RCON operations
Change the current map
From the server console, use the map command with a valid map name:
changelevel de_mirageTo issue the same action remotely, the commonly used form is:
rcon changelevel de_mirageThis changes the level without requiring every player to reconnect to the server process. Verify the rcon prefix and permissions on Valve’s current RCON documentation before scripting it, because third-party examples are not a substitute for the live command reference.
Use RCON deliberately
- Set
rcon_passwordon the server and restart or reload the configuration if your setup requires it. - On the administrator’s client, enter
rcon_password <password>in the console. - Run a harmless command first, such as a map or status query supported by your build, to confirm authentication.
- Apply the required action with the
rconprefix and watch the server log for an error. - Change the password immediately if it appears in a log, screenshot or shared terminal.
Never expose RCON directly to untrusted networks without the access controls supplied by your host. A leaked RCON credential is an administrative incident, not merely a player-join problem.

Single Workshop map
On a dedicated server, use host_workshop_map <file id>. The file ID is the numeric identifier in the Workshop page URL. The client-side map_workshop command does not host a map on a dedicated server, even if the administrator is subscribed to that item.

./cs2 -dedicated +map de_dust2 +host_workshop_map 12345678The launch-line example above is widely repeated from CS:GO-era guidance. Confirm that CS2 still accepts that ordering and syntax before using it for an unattended service.
Workshop collection
host_workshop_collection <collection id> requests a collection rather than one map. A third-party CS2 guide reports a 100-map collection limit; treat that limit as version-sensitive and verify it before designing a large rotation.

Some current guides document:
ds_workshop_listmapsto list Workshop maps available on the server.ds_workshop_changelevel <map name>to change to an available Workshop map by name.
These command names and their availability should be checked in the live CS2 build. If a map is not listed, confirm that the server completed its download, that the item is still published, and that the requested name matches the installed map exactly.
Build a maintainable CS2 server configuration
- Put startup-only values on the launch line. Use
-dedicated, the GSLT, a startup map and any port or instance options required by your host. - Put persistent policy in the server configuration. Store the hostname, join password, RCON password and routine warmup or match settings there, with file permissions restricted to administrators.
- Use the live console for temporary changes. Apply a map change, restart or event-specific mode without permanently altering the baseline.
- Record intentional exceptions. If an event needs a different warmup or password, note the original value so it can be restored after the event.
- Re-test after updates. Check authentication, mode selection, Workshop downloads and the commands your automation calls whenever CS2 updates.
Keep a known-good copy of the configuration outside the live directory. Do not store the GSLT or RCON password in that copy unless it is encrypted and access-controlled.
Troubleshooting command failures
The client opens instead of a server
Confirm that the executable was started with -dedicated. On Linux, invoke the server script rather than the normal client launcher.
The server is not public
Check that +sv_setsteamaccount <TOKEN> is present at startup, the token is valid and assigned to the intended instance, and the process can reach Steam’s authentication services. A missing or invalid token can leave a server usable for local testing but absent from the public listing.
A command has no effect
Read the console response and check whether the command belongs on the launch line, in a configuration file or in the live console. Mode variables may require a map reload; a warmup change may restart warmup; and cheat-protected variables may refuse to change without the appropriate server state.
A Workshop map will not load
Use host_workshop_map, not the client-only map_workshop. Verify the numeric file ID, wait for the server download to finish, and use the server’s Workshop listing command if available. If a collection fails, test one known-good item first to distinguish collection metadata problems from general Workshop connectivity.
RCON authentication fails
Re-enter rcon_password <password> on the client, check for quotation or whitespace mistakes, and verify that the server is using the same current password. If the credential was exposed, replace it rather than repeatedly testing it.
