To fix FPS drops or stuttering in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), first check whether the hitch comes from slow frame rendering or a network problem. Use the in-game Telemetry HUD while the issue happens, then test one local change at a time—starting with background apps and memory pressure, followed by CPU temperature and power behavior, graphics settings, and software conflicts. Average FPS alone can hide a slow frame.
Is it a local FPS hitch or a network problem?
In CS2, open Settings > Game > Telemetry and configure the HUD to show frame rate and network problems either when they are poor or all the time. Reproduce the hitch and note which indicators change at the same moment. A frame-performance drop and a network hitch need different fixes.
The HUD’s ping value is round-trip network latency; it does not measure how quickly your PC renders frames. If you experience rubber-banding or delayed player movement while the frame rate stays steady, inspect the network indicators rather than assuming the graphics settings are responsible. Buffering can smooth some packet loss or jitter, but it adds latency.
Check for slow frames, not just average FPS
A stable average can conceal a single unusually long frame, which may look like a visible hitch or feel like added input latency. Where available, use the Steam in-game overlay performance monitor and look at its minimum performance as well as its average. If the frame behavior worsens when the stutter occurs, focus on local performance.

Reduce background load and check memory
Close unnecessary apps and startup programs for a controlled test. Check available RAM while CS2 is running: when memory is scarce, the system may swap data to disk, which can reduce FPS or cause repeated hitches. Update CPU, graphics, and audio drivers through the relevant device maker or operating-system update channel.
Change one thing at a time, then repeat the same in-game situation. If you close several programs, change drivers, and lower settings all at once, you will not know which change affected the result.
Check CPU temperature, clocks, and power behavior
If FPS suddenly falls during a session, observe CPU temperature and clock or power behavior while playing. Steam identifies overheating and battery-conservation behavior as possible reasons a CPU may slow down. Make sure the computer has ventilation; on a laptop, test while connected to power and using an appropriate performance profile.

- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.

These checks help identify a possible cause; they do not prove that a particular component is defective. If temperature or power behavior changes alongside the slowdown, address that condition before assuming the GPU needs replacing.
Test graphics settings one change at a time
Temporarily lower resolution or graphics settings, then compare performance in a repeatable situation. Settings that exceed what the hardware can support can reduce FPS. If the change helps, restore options individually to find which setting matters on your PC; there is no universal best-settings recipe for every system.
Steam’s general performance guidance also mentions -autoconfig as a way to reset Valve games to detected settings. Treat launch options cautiously: use only a command you understand, and do not stack commands copied from the internet.

Isolate software that interacts with the game
If stuttering started after installing an overlay, capture tool, RGB utility, or monitoring program—or is especially noticeable while moving the mouse—close the suspected program and test again. Steam warns that software repeatedly attempting to inject into CS2 can cause performance degradation, including during low-level mouse events.

That option permits third-party software interaction; it does not establish that any particular utility is safe or improves performance.
When a hardware upgrade is justified
Consider hardware only after observations point to a specific limit. For example, a RAM upgrade may be worth investigating if monitoring shows memory pressure or disk swapping, and only if the kit is compatible with your computer. Do not buy RAM, a GPU, CPU, or SSD on the assumption that it will fix stuttering without evidence of the bottleneck.
Steam lists these Windows minimum requirements for CS2: Windows 10, four hardware CPU threads, 8 GB RAM, a graphics card with at least 1 GB of memory and DirectX 11 / Shader Model 5.0 compatibility, and 85 GB of available storage. Meeting minimum requirements is not an FPS guarantee: Steam Support says that simply meeting system requirements does not mean you will have high FPS or strong in-game performance.
Quick Recap
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Observe: Use Settings > Game > Telemetry during the hitch to compare frame and network behavior.
- Check the frame lows: Where available, use the Steam overlay performance monitor; do not rely on average FPS alone.
- Reduce software pressure: Close unnecessary apps, check available RAM, and update CPU, graphics, and audio drivers.
- Check CPU behavior: Observe temperature, clocks, and power during play; ensure ventilation and test a laptop while plugged in.
- Test graphics: Lower resolution or settings temporarily and compare in the same situation.
- Isolate conflicts: Close programs that interact with the game, especially if symptoms began after installing one or occur during mouse movement.
- Consider parts only with evidence: Verify the bottleneck and hardware compatibility before buying anything.
