Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Counter-Strike 2 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
For a competitive Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, launch with game_type 0 and game_mode 1, select the map or map group, and authenticate the server with a Steam game-server login token through sv_setsteamaccount. Load cfg/gamemode_competitive.cfg first and cfg/gamemode_competitive_tmm.cfg second. Those files establish the Premier-style baseline; apply any event exceptions only afterward.
What the competitive mode pair means
game_type and game_mode are the values that select CS2’s ruleset and its associated mode configuration. Valve’s documented competitive launch pair is game_type 0 with game_mode 1. Using a different pair can put the server in another ruleset even if the map is one normally associated with competitive play.

The pair does not turn a private server into official Valve matchmaking. Matchmaking preferences, including preferred ping and mode selection, are exposed through console variables, but the official matchmaking service controls queue behavior and can change independently of your server configuration. A self-hosted server can reproduce the competitive rules and roster format; it cannot force the public service’s current selection logic.
Prerequisites before you launch
- A current, vanilla CS2 dedicated-server installation. Update it before an event rather than copying an old installation whose mode files may no longer match the running build.
- A Steam game-server login token (GSLT) created for AppID 730. The token is supplied to the process with
sv_setsteamaccount. - The IP address and network policy for the machine that will host the server. The example below uses
10.10.10.12only as an example address. - The map or map group you intend to run, such as
mg_dust247andde_dust2in Valve’s example. - A written list of event-specific overrides, if your rules differ from the competitive baseline. Keeping that list separate makes it possible to audit and reproduce the match.
Launch a competitive dedicated server
Valve-style launch command
This command shows the complete shape of the launch workflow. Replace TOKEN with the GSLT assigned to the server and replace the address, map group, or map with your own values.

-dedicated starts the dedicated-server process, while -debug and -console expose the diagnostic console used during setup. The +mapgroup and +map arguments select the initial rotation and map. +tv_enable 1 enables CSTV at launch; retain it when your event needs a spectator broadcast or a recorded match feed.
Why the login token matters
sv_setsteamaccount connects the process to Steam’s game-server authentication using the token for AppID 730. Treat the token as a credential: do not publish it in a guide, commit it to a public repository, or paste it into a screenshot. If the server is not authenticated, players may see connection or reservation failures even though the game mode and map are correct.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Load the configuration files in the right order
After the process starts, load the two competitive files in this exact order:
- Load
cfg/gamemode_competitive.cfg. - Load
cfg/gamemode_competitive_tmm.cfg. - Load your server-side event file, if one exists, after both mode files.
The second file is not a replacement for the first. Valve’s tournament wording requires the Premier defaults to be established by loading the competitive file and then the competitive matchmaking file. Configuration values loaded later can override values loaded earlier, so reversing the order or loading an event file too soon can silently undo the intended baseline.

Keep overrides deliberate
Put only intentional exceptions in the final event file. Give that file a clear name, preserve a dated copy with the match records, and record every changed convar. Do not treat a tournament exception as a universal setting for a public or casual private server; the Major rulebook is written for tournament operation.
Core settings to check
| Setting | Competitive value or command | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Ruleset | game_type 0 |
Selects the documented competitive game type. |
| Mode | game_mode 1 |
Selects the documented competitive mode. |
| Steam authentication | sv_steamauth_enforce 1 |
Enforces Steam authentication for connected players in the tournament baseline. |
| Detailed logging | log on, mp_logdetail 3, mp_logdetail_items 1 |
Enables server logging and the detailed event and item logging specified by the cited baseline. |
| Warmup | mp_warmuptime 60, mp_warmup_pausetimer 1 |
Sets a 60-second warmup and keeps the warmup timer pause-capable. |
| Automatic 5v5 match pause | sv_matchpause_auto_5v5 1 |
Enables the automatic pause behavior for a five-versus-five match. |
| Halftime pause | mp_halftime_pausematch 1 |
Allows the match to pause at halftime under the tournament baseline. |
| Overtime limit | mp_overtime_limit 0 |
Uses the value shown in the cited Major baseline; change it only when your event rules specify a different overtime policy. |
| CSTV | tv_enable 1, tv_broadcast 1, tv_dispatchmode 0 |
Enables CSTV, broadcast mode, and the dispatch mode used in the cited baseline. |
The rulebook also specifies spectator and voting controls. Because those controls are event-governance settings rather than a single universal matchmaking switch, copy the exact values required by your current competition rules and verify them in the live server before the first map.
Building a 5v5 matchmaking-style server
Roster and pause policy
The sv_matchpause_auto_5v5 1 setting is the explicit five-versus-five element in the cited baseline. It does not create teams or enforce a roster by itself. Your event registration, password policy, and administrator procedures still have to define who may join and when substitutions are allowed.
Use mp_halftime_pausematch 1 when the rules call for a halftime pause. Decide in advance who can resume the match and how technical pauses are documented; otherwise an enabled pause mechanism can become a source of disputes rather than protection for players.

Warmup and ready checks
mp_warmuptime 60 gives players a one-minute warmup under the tournament baseline, and mp_warmup_pausetimer 1 allows that timer to be paused. A pause-capable warmup is useful for confirming rosters, voice communication, and spectator access before the live rounds begin. If your event has a different ready procedure, put the exception in the final override file and record it.
Overtime and clinch behavior
The cited Major baseline sets mp_overtime_limit 0. That number is a tournament-rule value, not a promise that every competitive server should use the same overtime policy. Before launch, decide whether your event ends at the regulation result, plays a defined number of overtime segments, or uses another tiebreaker, then set and document the value required by those rules.

Logging, demos, and CSTV operations
Turn on the baseline logging commands before players connect so the opening events are captured. Keep the resulting logs with the match record, using a consistent filename and time convention. The detailed settings are mp_logdetail 3 and mp_logdetail_items 1, in addition to log on.
Valve’s tournament guidance expects match demos to be recorded. Confirm that your demo-retention process is working before the first official map and preserve the files with the final configuration and change log. CSTV adds another operational path: tv_enable 1 starts it, tv_broadcast 1 enables broadcasting, and tv_dispatchmode 0 selects the cited dispatch mode. Test spectator permissions and the broadcast destination independently of player connectivity.

Verify the live server before the match
- Read back
game_typeandgame_modein the server console. They should show0and1, respectively. - Confirm that the intended map and map group are active, rather than relying on the command line alone.
- Check that the GSLT was accepted and that
sv_steamauth_enforceis1. - Query the logging, warmup, pause, overtime, and CSTV variables listed above and compare them with the event sheet.
- Join with a test account to verify authentication, team assignment, spectator behavior, and the ability to pause and resume under the published rules.
- Start a short test session, stop it cleanly, and confirm that logs, demos, and any CSTV output are actually written where your operators expect them.
Perform this verification after every restart. A startup script can be correct while a later admin command, map change, or automatically loaded file changes the live value.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server starts in the wrong ruleset
Inspect game_type and game_mode first. If either value is wrong, correct the launch arguments and restart, then reload the two competitive files in order. Do not try to repair a mode mismatch by changing unrelated round variables.
Settings revert after startup
Look for a later exec, map-specific file, or administrator command. The competitive matchmaking file must follow the base competitive file, and the event override must follow both. Compare the live value with the dated change log to identify the writer that changed it.
Players cannot authenticate
Check the token passed to sv_setsteamaccount, confirm that it was created for AppID 730, and verify that sv_steamauth_enforce 1 is intentional for the event. A copied, revoked, or mistyped token requires replacement rather than a gameplay-setting workaround.

CSTV or spectator output is missing
Confirm tv_enable 1, tv_broadcast 1, and tv_dispatchmode 0 in the live console. Then check the spectator and voting rules required by the event, since a correct CSTV launch does not automatically grant every observer permission.
Pause or overtime behavior is disputed
Read back sv_matchpause_auto_5v5, mp_halftime_pausematch, and mp_overtime_limit, and compare them with the published competition rules. If the values differ, stop before the official map and load the documented event override instead of changing settings mid-round.
Governance for tournament operators
Valve requires approval for server modifications beyond eBot, and large-scale tournaments require the appropriate Valve license. Treat those requirements as operational gates: obtain approval before deploying a mod, and confirm that the event is licensed before advertising it as a sanctioned large tournament.
Keep the vanilla server image, launch command, ordered configuration files, event override, logs, demos, and change log together. This package lets an administrator reproduce a disputed map and show which settings were active. It also makes a rollback possible when an update or a late edit introduces an unintended change.
What this configuration does not settle
There is no single, permanently published Premier map pool established by the material used for this guide, and no universal update-rate policy that applies to every matchmaking context. Check current Valve documentation and the rules of the specific event before fixing either detail in a public configuration.
Likewise, a self-hosted configuration can match the documented ruleset and tournament controls, but it cannot guarantee the behavior of Valve’s live matchmaking service. Use the mode pair, file order, authentication, and verification checklist as the stable foundation; treat service-side matchmaking preferences and event exceptions as policies that must be checked for the current build and competition.
