Godlike.Host offers hosted CS 1.6 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
A traditional Counter-Strike 1.6 dedicated server running GoldSrc/HLDS uses UDP port 27015 by default for game traffic. Forward that UDP port from your router to the server computer’s fixed private (LAN) address, and allow it through the computer’s firewall. Add TCP 27015 when you use RCON or a client/network setup that requires the TCP service.
HLDS must also be started for Internet play with +sv_lan 0. If you select a different port, change it in HLDS, the router rule, the host firewall, and every player’s connection address. A mismatch at any one of those points makes the server appear offline.
What port does a CS 1.6 server use?
The normal port for a Counter-Strike 1.6 server is 27015. This is the default documented by Valve for GoldSrc client connections and by Steam for dedicated or listen servers. The number is not a special requirement of every possible server configuration: it is the default HLDS value, and an administrator can choose another port with the -port option.
Use the transport protocol for the job it performs. A router rule that forwards only TCP will not carry ordinary gameplay packets, because players normally reach the game service over UDP.

Steam’s required-ports documentation describes local TCP 27015 as the default SRCDS RCON port and local UDP 27015 as the default gameplay port. For a GoldSrc CS 1.6 server, treat UDP as the essential forwarding rule and TCP as an additional rule rather than a substitute.
How the connection path works
Players on the Internet do not connect directly to your computer’s private address. Their packets first reach your public address, then the router’s NAT table decides which internal machine receives traffic for the selected port. The complete path is:
- The player enters your public address and port, for example
203.0.113.10:27015. - Your router receives the packet on its Internet-facing interface.
- A port-forwarding rule translates external UDP 27015 to UDP 27015 on the server PC’s private address.
- The operating-system firewall permits the packet to reach HLDS.
- HLDS accepts the connection because it is listening on that port and is running with Internet mode enabled.
Every link in this chain matters. Opening a port on the router cannot bypass a blocked host firewall, and an HLDS process listening on a different port cannot receive traffic sent to 27015.
What you need before creating the rule
- A reachable host: the computer running HLDS must remain powered on and connected while people play.
- A stable private address: record the server’s LAN address, such as
192.168.1.100. Reserve that address in the router’s DHCP settings or configure a static internal address so a reboot does not move the forwarding target. - Router administration access: the label may be “Port Forwarding,” “Port Range Forwarding,” “NAT,” or “Virtual Server,” depending on the vendor.
- Host-firewall access: you need permission to create an inbound rule for HLDS or for the selected UDP/TCP ports.
- Internet hosting mode: HLDS must use
+sv_lan 0. The value+sv_lan 1intentionally restricts the server to LAN clients.
If your Internet service places your router behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), you may not have a public IPv4 address that accepts inbound connections. In that case, a rule on your own router may never receive the traffic; you will need a public address from the provider, an upstream router configured by whoever controls it, a relay-based networking mode, or a managed host.
Open UDP 27015 for an Internet server
1. Find and stabilize the server’s LAN address
Look up the IPv4 address assigned to the computer running HLDS. On Windows, ipconfig shows the address; on Linux, ip addr or the distribution’s network settings does the same. Do not forward to a temporary DHCP lease. Create a DHCP reservation in the router for the computer’s network adapter, or assign a static address that is outside the router’s automatic pool and consistent with its subnet.
Write down the address in the exact form the router expects. If the server currently appears as 192.168.1.100 and later changes to 192.168.1.117, the old forwarding rule will point at the wrong device even though the rule itself still looks correct.

2. Start HLDS in Internet mode
Use the GoldSrc executable and set Internet mode explicitly. A typical Windows console launch is:
hlds.exe -console -game cstrike +sv_lan 0 +map de_dust2 -port 27015The -port 27015 argument is optional when you want the documented default, but including it makes the intended value visible in a script or service definition. On Linux, use the equivalent HLDS launcher, commonly:
./hlds_run -console -game cstrike +sv_lan 0 +map de_dust2 -port 27015The executable location and wrapper name vary by installation. What matters is that the process is the GoldSrc HLDS server, the game is cstrike, sv_lan is zero, and the port value is the one you will configure everywhere else. After startup, use the server console to confirm that it loaded the expected map and did not report a port-binding error.
3. Create the router/NAT forwarding rule
Sign in to the router’s administration page and create a rule with these values:

If the interface offers a single-port rule, enter 27015 once. If it asks for a range, use 27015 as both the start and end. Do not select “all protocols” unless you have a specific reason; a narrow UDP rule exposes less than a blanket rule.
Add a second rule for TCP 27015 when you use RCON or when testing shows that your particular compatibility setup needs it. The TCP rule does not replace UDP 27015 for gameplay.

4. Allow the port through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule on the server computer for UDP 27015. You can instead allow the HLDS executable, but a port-specific rule is easier to audit when the server is moved or the executable path changes. Add TCP 27015 only if you created the corresponding router rule for RCON or compatibility.
Ensure the rule applies to the network profile actually in use. A rule limited to a private profile will not work if the operating system has classified the connection as public. Keep the scope as narrow as practical: allow the selected port, and do not disable the entire firewall as a test.
5. Give each type of player the right address
Internet players should use the public address and port, for example 203.0.113.10:27015. The public address is assigned by your Internet provider and can change unless you have a fixed address or a separate dynamic-DNS arrangement.
Players on the same home network should normally use the server’s private address, such as 192.168.1.100:27015. Many consumer routers do not support NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT), so a local player may fail when using the public address even though an external player can connect successfully. Steam’s router guidance specifically recommends the internal form for same-router clients.
What to do when 27015 is already in use
Another server, a second HLDS instance, or an unrelated application may already be bound to 27015. HLDS can use another port, but the number must be changed as one coordinated configuration:
- Choose an unused port permitted by your network and hosting provider.
- Set
-port Nin the HLDS startup command, replacingNwith that number. - Forward external UDP
Nto internal UDPNon the server’s stable LAN address. - Add or change the host-firewall rule for UDP
N; add TCPNif RCON requires it. - Tell Internet players to connect to
public-address:Nand LAN players toprivate-address:N.
Steam’s router guide advises trying another port when the default is unavailable. Do not forward a new number while leaving HLDS on 27015, and do not change HLDS without updating the router and firewall; those partial changes create the same symptoms as a closed port.

How to test whether the server is reachable
Check HLDS locally first
- Confirm the process is running and listening on the intended port.
- Check the console for a bind failure or a message showing that another process owns the port.
- Verify the server reports
sv_lan 0for Internet hosting. - From another device on the same LAN, connect to the private address and selected port.
A successful LAN test proves that HLDS and the local firewall are working, but it does not prove that the router or upstream provider permits Internet traffic.
Test from a genuinely external network
Use a friend on another connection or a device on cellular data. A second device connected to the same home Wi-Fi is not an Internet test and may also be affected by NAT loopback behavior. Have the external tester use the public address with the explicit port. If that test works while the public address fails only inside the house, the forwarding rule may be correct and the limitation is local loopback support.
Troubleshooting: why friends cannot see or join the server
HLDS is listening on the wrong port
Recheck the startup command and any service script. If you changed the command to -port 27020 but still forward 27015, no packet can reach the process. Also check for a second HLDS instance that consumed the default port.
The router points to an old address
Compare the forwarding destination with the server’s current LAN address. A DHCP lease change is one of the most common causes of a rule that worked yesterday and fails after a reboot. Reserve the address, then update the rule if necessary.
The operating-system firewall is blocking traffic
Confirm that an inbound UDP rule exists on the active network profile and that it covers the selected port. Temporarily disabling the firewall is not a sound permanent fix; if you use it as a tightly controlled diagnostic, re-enable it and create the precise rule afterward.
sv_lan is set to one
+sv_lan 1 is for LAN-only play. Remove it or change it to +sv_lan 0, then restart HLDS so the setting applies at launch.

The public address is not truly assigned to your router
Inspect the router’s WAN address and compare it with the address an external service reports. If the router shows a private or carrier-grade address, another NAT device is upstream. Forwarding only on the inner router cannot solve that topology. Ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address, configure forwarding on the upstream device if you control it, or use a relay or managed host.

The server works by direct address but is missing from a browser
Discovery and direct connection are separate issues. First test the explicit public address and port. If direct connection works, investigate server registration, query filtering, map/mod compatibility, or client-side browser behavior rather than changing NAT rules at random.

Valve documents Steam Networking support for Counter-Strike and other GoldSrc games. On a supported current build and networking mode, Steam Datagram Relay can carry connections through Valve’s relay infrastructure, which may remove the need for inbound port forwarding on a home router.
This is not a universal switch for every legacy installation. Confirm that the exact CS 1.6 build, launch configuration, and networking mode support Steam Networking before deleting working NAT or firewall rules. Relay routing can use a different network path from direct hosting, and availability depends on the relay service. Direct hosting gives you more control over the path and the server’s exposure; relay hosting reduces the need to accept unsolicited inbound traffic at home.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running HLDS at home is appropriate when you want complete access to files, plugins, maps, and configuration and can keep the machine and connection online. A managed host shifts the network and hardware work to a provider. The choice is operational rather than a different CS 1.6 port standard: a managed installation may still use 27015 or another assigned port, according to that provider’s setup.

Whichever model you choose, keep the server software updated, use a strong RCON password, and expose only the ports you actually need.
