If a Counter-Strike 1.6 server is missing from the LAN tab, first allow UDP 27015 through the host computer’s firewall, confirm every computer is on the same local network, and keep the server on port 27015. You can still join immediately with the host computer’s private LAN address by using connect 192.168.1.42:27015 in the game console, even when the browser list remains empty.
What the symptom usually means
The LAN browser is a discovery view, not a complete test of whether the server is reachable. A dedicated HLDS server can be running correctly while its announcement or response traffic is blocked. The most common practical causes are:
- The host and player are on different networks, such as a guest Wi-Fi network and the main network.
- The host’s software firewall or security suite blocks unsolicited inbound traffic.
- UDP port 27015 is closed, filtered, or changed to another port.
- The player is trying the public internet address instead of the host’s private LAN address.
- The browser does not detect the server even though a direct connection works.
Valve’s documentation identifies UDP 27015 as the HLDS game and ping port. A dedicated server must accept incoming connections, which routers and software firewalls normally block until an allow rule exists. Discovery details for the LAN tab, including any exact broadcast port, are not established by the available documentation, so troubleshooting should focus on reachability rather than guessing at a discovery-only port.
Check the network before changing settings
Put every machine on the same local network
The server computer and each player must be connected to the same local network. Wi-Fi and Ethernet can work together; the important requirement is that the router allows devices on those connections to communicate. A laptop on the main home network may not see a desktop connected to an isolated guest network, even when both have internet access.

- Connect the host and clients to the same router or access point.
- Do not use a guest SSID, hotspot isolation mode, or any setting described as client isolation or AP isolation for the player devices.
- Disconnect any VPN or second network adapter temporarily if the game is selecting an unexpected address.
This is a LAN problem, so the address you need is the host’s private IPv4 address, normally in a range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Do not use the router’s public internet address for an in-home connection.
Find the host’s private IPv4 address on Windows
- On the computer running HLDS, press
Win+R, typecmd, and press Enter. - Run
ipconfig. - Under the adapter that is actually connected, locate IPv4 Address.
- Record that address. For example, if Windows shows
192.168.1.42, that is the address a LAN player should use.
Ignore disconnected adapters, virtual-machine adapters, and public addresses shown by web sites. If the host has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet active, use the address belonging to the interface connected to the same network as the players.
HLDS ports that matter
The Valve Developer Community wiki lists the following default HLDS ports. The values below describe their usual roles; they do not mean every port must be opened for a basic LAN match.

Forum and third-party port lists sometimes give different recommendations. For a dedicated server, use the Valve port assignments as the baseline. TCP 27015 may be useful for RCON, but opening TCP alone will not make ordinary game traffic visible because the game channel is UDP.

Step-by-step fix
1. Confirm that the server is actually running
Leave the HLDS console or server window open and verify that the process has finished starting before testing from another computer. A server that closed, crashed, or was started on a different machine cannot appear in the LAN browser. If you intentionally configured a non-default port, return to 27015 while diagnosing; a Steam discussion reports that the LAN browser checks only a narrow port range, so a custom port can be reachable yet absent from the list.
2. Allow UDP 27015 through the host firewall
On Windows, create an inbound rule for UDP 27015. Menu names vary slightly by Windows release, but the advanced firewall path is generally:

- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Advanced settings.
- Open Inbound Rules and select New Rule.
- Choose Port, select UDP, and enter specific local port
27015. - Choose Allow the connection, apply it to the profiles used by the host, and give it a clear name such as HLDS UDP 27015.
A program-based rule is another option: allow hlds.exe or the Counter-Strike game binary to accept inbound connections. If a security suite has its own firewall, add the same exception there; allowing the Windows rule does not automatically override a separate security product.
3. Use a short firewall-disable test
If the rule is difficult to diagnose, temporarily disable the host firewall or antivirus network protection for a controlled test while the server is running. Have a player try to connect. If the server becomes reachable, immediately turn protection back on and replace the test with a specific allow rule for UDP 27015 or the HLDS executable. Do not leave the firewall disabled as the permanent solution.

The Valve documentation suggests having another person attempt a connection or watching for incoming UDP traffic on port 27015 with a network monitor. Seeing packets arrive but no successful connection points to the host firewall or server process; seeing no packets suggests the wrong address, network isolation, or a router filter.
4. Connect directly by LAN address
On the client computer, open the Counter-Strike console and enter:

Replace 192.168.1.42 with the IPv4 address you recorded from the host. If the server uses the default port, the explicit :27015 is still useful because it removes ambiguity. A direct connection can succeed even when the LAN tab has no entry; that proves the server and game port are reachable and isolates the remaining problem to discovery or the browser.
5. Add the address to Favorites
If direct connection works but the LAN list does not, add the server’s private address and port to the game’s Favorites list. Favorites avoid repeated discovery searches and are often the most reliable option for a small, stable LAN. Keep the address updated if the router assigns the host a different IPv4 address after a reboot.

Firewall and router details
Do not confuse LAN access with internet port forwarding
Port forwarding on the router is intended to expose a service from the internet to the private network. It is not normally required for players who are already on the same LAN. For this problem, first create the host-computer firewall exception and verify local connectivity. Forwarding a port unnecessarily can expose the server to unsolicited internet traffic.

When the router is the blocker
Some access points prevent wireless clients from communicating with one another. Look for settings named guest network isolation, AP isolation, wireless isolation, or client isolation and turn them off for the network used by the game, or move all players to a non-isolated network. If the host is wired and clients are wireless, check that the router permits wired-to-wireless traffic; the connection type itself is not the problem.
Check the active network profile
Windows can apply different firewall rules to private and public network profiles. The host should use the profile appropriate for a trusted home or office LAN. If the network is classified as public, an allow rule limited to the private profile will not take effect. Rather than weakening all firewall profiles, either classify the trusted network correctly or apply the narrowly scoped rule to the profile that is actually active.

- Recheck the address. Run
ipconfigagain on the host and ensure the client is using the current IPv4 address, not an old DHCP assignment or a public address. - Recheck the port. Keep HLDS on UDP 27015 during diagnosis. A server started on another port may not be checked by the LAN browser, and a firewall rule for 27015 will not help a server listening elsewhere.
- Recheck the firewall. Confirm that the rule is inbound, uses UDP rather than only TCP, and applies to the active network profile. Also inspect any antivirus or third-party firewall.
- Recheck network isolation. Ensure the client and host are on the same non-guest network and that the router allows device-to-device traffic.
- Retest with the host firewall briefly disabled. If the connection now succeeds, restore protection and make a precise exception instead of leaving it disabled.
- Try from a second client. If one player connects and another cannot, the remaining fault is on the second client’s network or firewall rather than on HLDS.
Changing sv_lan is not a dependable first-line fix. Community reports conflict, and it is rarely the reason a correctly addressed server blocked by UDP filtering is missing. Resolve addressing and firewall conditions before experimenting with that variable.
When the LAN tab is empty but the server works
If connect 192.168.1.42:27015 succeeds, the important game path is functioning. The remaining defect is limited to discovery, browser filtering, or the client’s cached list. Use Favorites or the console command rather than repeatedly changing server settings. Keeping the server on the default 27015 port is especially sensible because a Steam discussion reports that the LAN browser searches only a narrow range of ports. That report is community-sourced, so treat it as a practical compatibility constraint rather than a documented specification.
The exact broadcast mechanism and broadcast port used by the LAN tab are not confirmed by the available Valve documentation. For that reason, do not open random UDP ports based on conflicting third-party lists. Start with the documented game port and a direct-connect test.
LAN visibility is different from internet visibility
A server missing from the Internet tab is a separate problem. Internet listing depends on master-server registration and external reachability, not merely on two computers sharing a router. A third-party guide suggests editing masterserver.vdf in the cstrike folder, but that procedure is not verified here and should not be treated as an established fix. Solve local connectivity first; do not use internet-tab advice to diagnose an empty LAN list.

- Allow inbound UDP 27015 for HLDS in Windows Firewall and any separate security firewall.
- Temporarily test with protection disabled, then restore it and keep only the precise exception.
- Join with
connect host-LAN-IP:27015. - If that works, save the address in Favorites and treat the empty LAN tab as a discovery-browser issue.
