Use your SSD maker’s utility as the authority for that model’s life estimate, firmware compatibility and drive-specific self-tests. Use CrystalDiskInfo as an independent SMART/NVMe viewer and trend log. If the headline percentages disagree, compare the underlying fields, thresholds and warning bits; neither percentage is a universal countdown to failure.
What the two programs are actually measuring
CrystalDiskInfo presents controller-specific SMART and NVMe data
CrystalDiskInfo is a Windows HDD/SSD utility that supports SMART health status and NVMe drives. Its Health Status is threshold-based: the program evaluates the attributes and limits exposed by the controller, then presents a label such as Good, Caution or Bad. The same label can therefore be based on different fields and thresholds on two different SSD models.
The application also exposes the underlying SMART attributes or NVMe log values, including temperature, power-on information, written-data counters, warning bits and controller-specific remaining-life attributes when the drive supplies them. That visibility makes it useful for checking what a vendor utility is summarising and for recording a value over time.

The maker’s utility adds model-specific interpretation
An SSD maker’s current utility is designed around the firmware and attributes used by that manufacturer. It is the better starting point for the maker’s life estimate, supported firmware versions, compatibility notices and any drive-specific diagnostic or self-test functions.
For example, the Samsung Magician DC guide describes SMART commands that list attributes, log temperature, estimate lifetime, report the percentage of available LBA to replace and execute SMART self-tests. Those functions depend on what the particular model and firmware expose; a different manufacturer’s utility may use a different set of fields or offer fewer tests.
The consumer Samsung Magician documentation likewise says drive-health and total-usage information are available for Samsung-branded products and depend on the SMART attributes a drive supports. A third-party viewer can still read many of those attributes, but it does not know every vendor’s intended wording or maintenance workflow.
“Health” is telemetry, not a cell-by-cell laboratory test
Both programs are presenting information reported by the SSD controller. A health bar is not a direct inspection of every NAND cell and is not a measured probability that the drive will fail on a particular date. It is a calculated or normalized interpretation of wear, spare capacity, errors and other telemetry defined by the device.

That distinction explains why a drive can show a reassuring percentage while still needing attention for a critical warning, media error, failed self-test or rapidly changing value. Conversely, a low-looking percentage can be an endurance estimate that has not produced an immediate fault.
Why NVMe percentages are especially easy to misread
NVMe drives expose a health information log with several fields that are often compressed into one headline number by utilities. Microsoft’s NVMe health-log definition gives these fields different meanings:

Available Spare answers how much reserved replacement capacity remains. Percentage Used answers how much of the manufacturer’s estimated subsystem life has been consumed. They can move at different rates and can legitimately produce different apparent “health” results. A utility that selects one field for its headline and another utility that selects the other field are not necessarily contradicting the controller.

The practical hierarchy is therefore conditional rather than absolute: trust the maker’s utility for what its own life percentage means, whether firmware is compatible and what a self-test result signifies; trust CrystalDiskInfo to independently inspect and trend the fields behind that interpretation.

How to reconcile a disagreement step by step
- Confirm that both programs are reading the same device. Check the model name, serial or namespace information shown by each utility. On a system with several SSDs, it is easy to compare one program’s boot drive with the other program’s secondary drive.
- Check for a storage abstraction. RAID controllers, some motherboard storage modes and vendor drivers can change which SMART or NVMe fields are passed through. If one program sees a virtual volume while the other sees a physical namespace, their values are not a valid one-to-one comparison.
- Record the raw fields. Write down Available Spare, Percentage Used, Critical Warning, temperature, media or data-integrity errors, power-on hours and written-data counters. For SATA drives, record the attribute identifier, current value, worst value and threshold where shown. Do not compare only Good, Caution or a colored bar.
- Identify which field produced each percentage. An NVMe percentage based on Percentage Used is an estimated life-used value; one based on Available Spare is a spare-capacity value. For SATA or vendor-specific attributes, use the model’s documentation or the maker utility’s explanation rather than assuming that 100 always means the same thing.
- Compare thresholds and warning bits. A raw value can be normal for one controller and below threshold for another. A threshold breach or active critical-warning bit is more actionable than a cosmetic difference between two headline percentages.
- Check the maker utility for model and firmware support. Make sure it recognises the exact model and reports whether the installed firmware is supported. The maker’s utility may also reveal a drive-specific self-test or diagnostic option that CrystalDiskInfo does not interpret for you.
- Run an available self-test and preserve the result. Use the maker’s diagnostic function when offered, note whether it passes or fails, and keep the date and drive identity with the result. Do not treat a passing test as proof that future wear is impossible; it is one piece of evidence alongside the health log.
- Start a trend log. Capture the same fields at regular intervals, especially after heavy writes, temperature events or firmware changes. A stable value with no warnings is generally less concerning than a rapidly changing value, a new error or a newly asserted critical warning.
Common disagreement patterns and what they mean
CrystalDiskInfo shows 90%, while the maker utility shows 70%
First determine whether the values represent the same field. The maker may be presenting a vendor-defined lifetime estimate while CrystalDiskInfo is calculating Health Status from a remaining-life attribute or threshold. If the raw values, thresholds and warning bits are normal and stable, the numerical difference alone does not establish a fault. Keep both readings in your log and use the maker’s figure for decisions about that maker’s stated life estimate.
CrystalDiskInfo shows a low percentage, but the maker utility says the drive is healthy
Inspect the attribute behind the low number. A controller-specific remaining-life field may use a scale that CrystalDiskInfo labels conservatively, or the value may represent spare capacity rather than wear. Check for errors, critical warnings, temperature excursions and self-test results before deciding that the SSD is near failure. If the maker utility identifies a supported firmware issue or diagnostic failure, follow that information even when the third-party percentage looks better.
The NVMe Percentage Used reaches 100%
That value means the manufacturer’s estimate of NVM subsystem life used has reached its defined endpoint. It is not a promise that the drive will stop working at that instant. Back up the data, verify whether any warning or error is present, and plan a replacement rather than relying on the percentage as a countdown clock.

Available Spare falls while Percentage Used changes slowly
These fields measure different things. Available Spare tracks normalized reserved capacity remaining; Percentage Used is a vendor-specific life-used estimate. A change in one does not require a matching change in the other. Compare each with its own threshold and watch for a critical warning.

The percentage is high, but a critical warning or failed self-test appears
Give priority to the warning or failed test. A headline percentage can remain high because it represents wear, while a separate warning reports an electrical, media, reliability or spare-capacity condition. Back up first and investigate the specific condition through the maker’s utility and the operating system.
How TBW and host writes fit into the picture
Total bytes written (TBW) is a common endurance measure, but it is not an exact failure date. The SanDisk endurance guidance directs NVMe users to the Data Units Written field when checking host writes. Use that counter as context: compare accumulated writes with the model’s published endurance rating, while remembering that workload pattern, temperature, spare area and error history also affect the controller’s estimate.
Do not convert a TBW rating into a guaranteed number of remaining days. A drive can exceed a nominal endurance figure and continue operating, or develop a warning before reaching it. Conversely, a low host-write total does not rule out firmware, media or electrical problems. The health log, warning bits and self-test result remain necessary evidence.
When a reading requires immediate action

Microsoft’s critical-warning guidance treats that condition as a reason to back up and investigate rather than wait for a percentage to fall further. The SanDisk endurance information likewise warns that an SSD with no life remaining will enter a read-only state. These are operational triggers, not merely cosmetic changes in a dashboard.

Choosing a replacement after an exhaustion warning
Do not buy a generic replacement solely because CrystalDiskInfo shows a lower percentage. Match the replacement to the computer’s interface (SATA or NVMe), physical form factor, capacity and workload endurance requirement. Confirm that the system has the required slot or connector and that the operating system or enclosure supports the chosen interface.
If the old drive is still readable, make the backup or migration before experimenting with firmware updates, extended tests or repeated full-drive writes. If it has entered read-only mode, prioritize copying irreplaceable files and creating a verified backup over attempts to reset the health number; resetting SMART or NVMe counters would not restore exhausted NAND or erase a hardware warning.
A monitoring routine that gives the readings context
- Establish a baseline. Record the model, firmware version, interface, capacity, temperature, power-on hours, host-write counter, Available Spare or relevant SATA wear attribute, Percentage Used where available, and current warning state.
- Use both views after major events. Check the maker utility and CrystalDiskInfo after a firmware change, unusually hot operation, a large data migration or an unexpected system error.
- Keep dates with every value. A single percentage has little meaning without knowing whether it has been stable for months or changed sharply in a week.
- Escalate on behavior, not color. New warnings, failed tests, rising integrity errors, read-only behavior or a fast trend change deserve action even if a green indicator remains.
- Retain the model-specific interpretation. Save the maker utility’s explanation or support information for that exact model so that a future comparison does not substitute a generic threshold for the manufacturer’s definition.
This routine lets CrystalDiskInfo serve as an independent record while the maker utility remains the reference for vendor-defined life, firmware and diagnostics. The result is a decision based on fields, thresholds and trends instead of whichever percentage happens to be larger.
