A cryptocurrency wallet gives you a way to manage the keys that authorize transactions; it does not store coins or tokens themselves. Your main choice is who controls those keys, how they are kept, and how you will recover access if something goes wrong. This guide explains hot and cold wallets, self-custody and custodians, and practical steps for protecting funds.
What a cryptocurrency wallet actually does
Crypto assets are recorded on their networks. A wallet manages the keys used to access those assets and authorize transactions. A private key authorizes transactions; a public key can be shared to receive assets and verify activity. Losing access to the private key can mean losing access to the associated assets. The SEC’s retail investor bulletin on crypto custody explains the distinction between assets and the keys used to control them.
Many wallets provide a recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, that can restore wallet access. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to access the wallet, so it must be treated like a master key.
Hot and cold wallets: a connectivity trade-off
“Hot” and “cold” describe how a wallet’s keys are connected to the internet, not who owns or controls them. A wallet can be self-custodial or operated by a provider, regardless of the provider’s particular storage methods.

| Wallet type | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hot wallet | Connected to the internet, often through a desktop, mobile, or web application. | Convenient for frequent transactions, but more exposed to online threats. |
| Cold wallet | Generally keeps keys offline. A hardware wallet is one physical option. | Can reduce online exposure, but may be less convenient; a device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. |
Cold storage is not risk-free. A hardware wallet’s security also depends on its setup, recovery backup, and whether you carefully review transaction details before approving them. Phishing, unsafe recovery-phrase storage, and approving a malicious transaction can still put assets at risk. The SEC bulletin, Ethereum.org security guidance, and Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance describe these risks.
Self-custody or a third-party custodian?
Connectivity and custody are separate choices. With self-custody, you control the private keys and take responsibility for securing them and planning recovery. With third-party custody, a provider controls access to keys. That provider may use hot storage, cold storage, or a combination; the label alone does not tell you how assets are protected.

What to check before using a custodian
A provider can be hacked, shut down, or become insolvent. Before entrusting it with assets, examine its background and regulatory status, supported assets, storage methods, security and access controls, insurance terms, privacy protections, fees, use of customer assets, and what happens if it fails. Do not assume that a provider’s insurance covers every asset, loss, or account. The SEC’s custody bulletin recommends examining these details.

What to consider before choosing self-custody
Self-custody gives you direct key control, but there may be no provider able to restore access if you lose the keys and recovery materials. Decide how you will make and protect a backup, and confirm that the particular wallet’s recovery process is clear to you before depositing assets.

How to protect wallet access and transactions
- Keep recovery information private. Never share a recovery phrase or private key with a person, website, or purported support agent. Ethereum.org’s guidance is direct: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
- Avoid cloud-exposed copies. Do not take screenshots of a recovery phrase or private key; screenshots may sync to cloud storage.
- Make a complete, secure backup. Check how the wallet handles recovery. Some wallets manage multiple keys behind the scenes, so a partial backup might not restore all funds, according to Bitcoin.org.
- Inspect every transaction before signing. Compare the recipient address and review the transaction message. Ethereum transactions are irreversible once sent, Ethereum.org warns.
- Limit smart-contract permissions. Where the wallet or application allows it, grant only the spending permission needed rather than unlimited permission.
- Secure online accounts and devices. Use strong passwords and multifactor authentication on online accounts, keep software updated, and watch for phishing.
- Consider multiple approvals for Bitcoin. Bitcoin.org describes multisignature as a way to require multiple independent approvals, including for an individual seeking protection against compromise of one device or location.
How to compare wallet options
There is no single best wallet for every reader. Compare options against your transaction habits, recovery plan, and tolerance for managing security yourself.
- Identify key control: establish whether you or a provider controls the private keys.
- Assess connectivity and convenience: consider how often you transact and whether always-available access is worth the additional online exposure.
- Check recovery responsibilities: understand what backups are needed, who can restore access, and what happens if a device or provider becomes unavailable.
- Verify supported assets and networks: confirm the wallet supports the particular assets and networks you intend to use.
- Review security and transaction approval: examine device, software, and account protections, and whether transaction details are clear before approval.
- Compare fees, privacy, and failure risks: for a custodian, review its fees, privacy practices, and arrangements if it fails; for self-custody, account for your own backup and security responsibilities.
If considering a hardware wallet, verify current network compatibility, security design, transaction display, recovery procedure, firmware and update process, and that you obtain the device through a legitimate seller. No specific model is established here as best; a device alone cannot replace careful recovery handling and transaction review.

What the 2026 U.S. regulatory updates mean for wallet users
On October 1, 2026, SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins said the Commission had proposed a crypto-specific custody framework for investment advisers and funds. He described the proposal as addressing “a gap that has left investment advisers and funds guessing how to effect lawful custody of an asset class that their clients increasingly demand.” This was a proposal in that regulated context, not a general rule telling retail users which wallet to choose.
