Artists can accept cryptocurrency for artwork or services, or sell an NFT linked to their work—but those are different transactions with different costs, rights and risks. Crypto is optional: before accepting it, decide how you will price the work, record the payment, handle conversion and explain what the buyer is allowed to do with the art.

How can artists accept cryptocurrency?

For a commission, download, or other service, accepting cryptocurrency is a payment arrangement. It does not require minting an NFT. Agree with the buyer on the amount, the asset and network, who pays transaction costs, and whether the quoted price is denominated in dollars or in crypto. If the price is set in dollars, specify how and when you will calculate the crypto amount, since the value of many cryptocurrencies can change between quotation and payment.

Set up the payment before accepting an order

  1. Choose what you are willing to receive. Consider whether you want a volatile cryptocurrency or a stablecoin, and whether you can use the chosen asset and network where you live. A stablecoin is designed to track a reference value, but that design does not remove transaction, custody or issuer-related risks.
  2. Choose how you will receive it. You might receive payment to a wallet you control or through a service that supports crypto payments. Check the service’s availability, supported assets and networks, fees, custody arrangements and withdrawal rules before quoting a client. Do not assume a marketplace or payment service supports every country or payment method.
  3. Put the terms in writing. State the amount or pricing method, accepted asset and network, payment deadline, responsibility for fees, delivery timing and what happens if a payment is sent incorrectly or arrives short. Separately describe the buyer’s rights to reproduce, display or adapt the work.
  4. Confirm payment in the correct account and network. Compare the receiving address and network with the instructions you gave the buyer. Treat a transaction as paid only when you can verify it in the wallet or service you use; a screenshot or an email is not, by itself, confirmation that funds arrived.
  5. Save the transaction record. Keep the date, amount received, asset, transaction or exchange record, fees, and the value you use for your accounting. Retain the agreement and invoice alongside those records.

If you cannot readily use or convert the asset, accepting it may add work rather than convenience. Decide in advance whether you will keep the crypto, convert it, or decline crypto payments; conversion can create another reportable transaction for U.S. federal tax purposes.

How is accepting crypto different from selling an NFT?

When you accept crypto for a commission or artwork, you receive a digital asset as payment. When you mint and sell an NFT, you create or list a token associated with a digital item and transfer that token to a buyer. The NFT sale does not automatically transfer copyright in the associated artwork.

Before listing an NFT, write down what the buyer receives: for example, whether they may display the work, use it commercially, make copies, or create adaptations. Also state which rights you retain. The token’s sale and the artwork’s copyright or license are separate matters. Coinbase’s NFT terms make the distinction explicit for purchases using its service: “When you purchase an NFT using our service, you should not assume that you own any copyright or license to the content associated with the NFT.” Review the terms of the particular marketplace as well as your own buyer-facing license; the marketplace may itself receive a license to content under its service terms.

What fees can reduce an NFT sale’s proceeds?

Marketplace charges and blockchain transaction costs are separate. OpenSea’s help page dated May 12, 2026 lists typical fees of 1% for selling NFTs and 10% for primary drops. It says fees can change. Gas is a separate cost paid to blockchain validators, not to OpenSea. These are dated OpenSea examples, not a universal or permanent fee schedule; check the terms and transaction screen at the time of sale.

Do NFT artists get royalties on resales?

Not reliably on every resale. OpenSea describes creator earnings as optional or enforced. Enforcement depends on compatible contract standards and configuration, and does not mean every marketplace will collect and pay an earning on every secondary-market sale. Treat resale earnings as conditional, not guaranteed income. Check how the relevant marketplace handles creator earnings and whether the NFT’s contract supports the configuration you intend to use.

Do artists have to pay taxes on crypto payments?

For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets—including cryptocurrency, stablecoins and NFTs—as property, not currency. The IRS’s digital-assets guidance says, “For U.S. tax purposes, digital assets are considered property, not currency.” Its January 28, 2026 reminder says taxpayers must report related income, gains or losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. The exact treatment of a particular payment depends on the facts, and this is not individualized tax advice.

Keep records even if no tax form arrives

The IRS says most Forms 1099-DA for 2025 will not include basis. A form therefore may not contain all the information needed for your records or return. Keep your own transaction dates, amounts, fees, wallet and exchange records, and the value used in your accounting. Preserve records for both receipt and any later sale, exchange or spending of the asset, and follow the filing instructions that apply to the tax year and your circumstances.

This guidance is about U.S. federal taxes. State, local and non-U.S. rules may differ. An artist with substantial transactions, uncertain valuation, or cross-border activity may need advice from a qualified tax professional.

How can artists keep crypto in a wallet safely?

With self-custody, you control the wallet and are responsible for protecting access to it and backing up its recovery passphrase. Coinbase’s NFT terms warn, in the context of its service, “Because you control your wallet, there is no way for us to help you if you lose control over your wallet.” Losing the recovery information or exposing it to someone else can put access to the assets at risk.

  • Keep the recovery passphrase private and store its backup securely; never send it to a buyer or disclose it in response to an unsolicited message.
  • Check the asset, network and destination address carefully before confirming a transfer. A transaction sent to the wrong destination or on an unsupported network may not be recoverable.
  • Use a separate wallet or account for business activity if that helps you keep payments and records organized.
  • A hardware wallet is an optional accessory for people who choose self-custody, not a requirement for every artist. It does not replace careful transaction review or safe recovery-passphrase storage.

If using a custodial service instead, check who controls the wallet, how account recovery works, and what happens if withdrawals are restricted. Custody arrangements differ, so read the service’s current terms rather than assuming a marketplace is holding assets on your behalf.

What should artists check before choosing a marketplace?

Marketplace features and availability change, so compare the current terms for the places you can actually use. Check primary-sale and secondary-sale charges, gas and other transaction costs, how creator earnings are applied, who controls the wallet, the recovery process, the content license granted to the service, the buyer’s rights, supported jurisdictions, payment methods and networks.

Do not rely on older descriptions of Coinbase NFT as a standalone marketplace: Coinbase says that marketplace began sunsetting on July 10, 2024, and that marketplace functions halted except for listing cancellations. This status does not establish whether other Coinbase services support a particular transaction. Verify current product availability directly before relying on it.
