Crypto transactions rarely have one single “fee.” Your total cost can combine an exchange trading charge, a spread in the quoted price, payment or fiat-transfer charges, and a crypto withdrawal charge that reflects blockchain network costs. The amount you actually pay depends on the service, asset, order type, fee tier, funding method and network selected, so the transaction preview shown immediately before confirmation is the authoritative figure.
What you actually pay when using crypto
Buying, selling or moving cryptocurrency can involve several independent price layers. An order-book trade may have a maker or taker fee. An instant-buy quote may build a spread into the displayed exchange rate. Depositing or withdrawing government-issued currency can add a bank or payment charge. Sending crypto to another wallet can add an exchange withdrawal charge and a blockchain network fee. Some services bundle one or more of these costs into a single quote, while others show them separately.
- Trading fee: charged when an exchange executes your buy or sell order.
- Spread: the difference between a reference market price and the price offered to you.
- Fiat funding charge: a fee for depositing or withdrawing dollars, euros or another national currency, or for using a payment method.
- Crypto withdrawal charge: an amount the exchange deducts when it broadcasts a withdrawal to a blockchain. It is often based on an estimate of network cost.
- Network fee: the blockchain’s own charge for processing and including a transaction.
There is no documented market-wide “typical crypto fee” that can be applied to every platform. Published schedules are product-specific and can change with volume, market conditions, location, asset and payment route.

How maker and taker orders work
A centralized exchange maintains an order book. A maker order rests on that book and adds liquidity because it does not match immediately. A taker order removes existing liquidity by matching an order that is already available. Market orders generally execute immediately and are taker orders.

A limit order is not automatically a maker order. If its price crosses the orders already available, it can execute immediately and be charged at the taker rate. A limit order that rests first is maker only for the portion that rests. A partially filled order can therefore contain both maker and taker portions, with each portion charged under the applicable rate.
Why the percentage changes
Exchange schedules commonly use trailing 30-day trading volume. The applicable tier can also depend on the trading pair, product and whether each fill is maker or taker. Coinbase Exchange states that its tier is based on trailing 30-day USD volume and the tier in effect when the order is placed. Kraken says its executed trading fee depends on 30-day volume, the trading pair and maker/taker status. A rate shown for one interface or pair does not automatically apply to another.
| Published example | Rate or result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Exchange, $0K–$10K tier | 60 basis points taker; 40 basis points maker | Schedule accessed in 2026; this is one exchange tier, not a market average |
| Coinbase Exchange, displayed tier range | Taker rates from 0.04% to 0.60%; maker rates from 0.00% to 0.40% | Across the tiers shown on that published schedule, accessed in 2026 |
| Kraken worked BTC/USD example | On a $10,000 order with $125,000 trailing volume: $25 at 0.25% taker or $12 at 0.12% maker | Example in Kraken’s trading-fee explainer, updated October 1, 2026 |
To estimate a trading charge, multiply the executed order value by the rate that applies to each fill. For example, a 60-basis-point rate is 0.60%, so a completely filled $1,000 order at that rate would produce a $6 trading charge. Your actual result can differ if the order fills at several prices, qualifies for a different tier or contains both maker and taker portions.

Spreads and instant-buy quotes
A spread is the gap between a reference market rate and the price a service gives you. Instant-buy and instant-sell products may include that spread in the quote as well as a named trading fee and a payment-method fee. Kraken’s documentation says its Instant Buy/Sell spread can vary with volatility, asset, order size and order type, VIP status and account activity. A low advertised commission or a fee waiver therefore does not prove that the all-in price is low.

Use the confirmation screen rather than a headline percentage as your comparison point. Record the amount of fiat you will pay, the quantity of crypto you will receive, the quoted rate, every named fee and any payment charge. Dividing the total money debited by the quantity received gives you an effective purchase price that incorporates the visible components of that quote. Do not assume that an instant interface is always more expensive or always cheaper; the result is transaction-specific.
Fiat deposits and withdrawals are separate costs
Moving cash into or out of an exchange is not the same as trading. A bank transfer can be free while a wire or card route costs money, and the exchange fee may be only one part of the bank’s total charge. The following figures are from Coinbase Exchange’s displayed fiat table accessed October 13, 2026.
| Fiat route | Deposit charge | Withdrawal charge |
|---|---|---|
| ACH | Free | Free |
| USD wire | $10 | $25 |
| SEPA EUR | €0.15 | Free |
These are Coinbase Exchange examples for the stated routes, not universal banking terms. Other routes listed by an exchange, including SWIFT, can have different pricing. Kraken also separates cash funding charges from crypto withdrawal fees and notes that a funding provider may add its own charge. Check both the exchange’s schedule and the bank or payment provider’s terms for your country.

Exchange withdrawal charge versus blockchain fee
When you withdraw crypto to an external address, the exchange must arrange a blockchain transaction. The network may require a fee in its native cryptocurrency, while the exchange may present you with a withdrawal charge calculated from an anticipated network cost, an operational policy or both. The amount you pay can therefore differ from the amount the exchange ultimately pays miners or validators. The exchange should show the charge and selected network before you confirm.

Coinbase’s Global Exchange network-fee explanation says a network fee is paid in the blockchain’s native cryptocurrency to incentivize transaction inclusion and that its own charge is based on an estimate of network charges it anticipates paying. Coinbase’s Help page states: “All fees we charge will be disclosed at the time of your transaction.” Treat that disclosure as the relevant figure for the specific product, asset and network. The same documentation says USDC withdrawals are free across supported networks under that service’s stated policy; that exception should not be generalized to every Coinbase product, token or network.
The amount that arrives
Before sending, verify the destination network and the net amount the recipient will receive. A withdrawal screen can show an amount you enter, a fee deducted from that amount and a final amount delivered. Sending an asset over an unsupported or mismatched network can make funds inaccessible, even when the fee itself was correctly displayed. Confirm that the receiving wallet supports the exact asset and network, and start with a small test transfer when the address or network is unfamiliar.
Ethereum gas fees in plain language
Ethereum uses gas to measure the computational work required for an operation. Ethereum.org defines the gas fee as “the amount of gas used to do some operation, multiplied by the cost per unit gas.” In formula form:
Gas fee = gas used × price per unit of gas.
The price has a base fee and, for transactions using Ethereum’s fee market, a priority fee (tip). Network demand can push the priority fee higher. More complex operations, such as smart-contract interactions, generally require more gas than a simple transfer because they perform more computation.

Ethereum fees are paid in ETH. Ethereum.org’s explanatory example uses 21,000 gas units, a 10 gwei base fee and a 2 gwei tip: 21,000 × (10 + 2) gwei equals 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. That is a teaching example from documentation updated June 24, 2026, not a live gas quote.
What happens when a transaction fails
Gas is charged for work performed even when an included transaction ultimately fails. Unused gas is returned. This differs from a transaction rejected before inclusion because its gas limit is inadequate: it does not run on-chain in the same way as a transaction that starts execution and then runs out of gas. If a wallet or exchange warns that the gas limit is too low, correct the limit before submitting rather than assuming a failed on-chain attempt will be free.
How to calculate your all-in crypto cost
Use the following process for each transaction. It works for a purchase, sale or withdrawal, but the fields you need to inspect differ by service.
- Identify the exact product. Note whether you are using an order-book market, an instant-buy or sell feature, a conversion tool, margin, or another service. Fee rules can differ inside the same company.
- Write down the asset, pair and order value. The trading pair and size can affect both the fee tier and the available quote.
- Check your current tier. Look for the trailing-volume period, the volume currency and the tier that will apply when the order is placed. Do not use a rate from a different account, pair or date.
- Determine execution type. A market order is ordinarily taker. For a limit order, check whether it will rest or cross the book; a partial fill can use both rates.
- Compare the quote with the reference price. For an instant product, inspect the quantity received and the displayed rate for evidence of a spread. Include any separately listed trading or payment fee.
- Add fiat funding costs. Include the deposit or withdrawal charge for the chosen ACH, wire, SEPA or other route, plus any fee charged by the bank or payment provider.
- For a crypto withdrawal, verify asset and network. Read the withdrawal charge, the net amount to be delivered and the destination network on the final confirmation screen.
- Calculate the total in one unit. For a purchase, add trading, spread-related price impact and payment costs, then divide by the crypto received if you need an effective price. For a withdrawal, compare the amount debited with the amount arriving at the destination. Save the confirmation because fees and schedules can change later.
Worked ways to think about the total
Order-book purchase
Suppose an order-book trade fills entirely as taker. Start with the executed value and multiply it by the taker rate in your current tier. Then check whether the funding route charged to bring in fiat is separate. If the order was a limit order that rested for part of its life and crossed the book for the rest, calculate the maker charge on the resting fills and the taker charge on the immediately matched fills. The sum, not the label “limit,” is your trading cost.

Instant purchase
For an instant quote, compare the fiat amount you authorize with the crypto quantity shown before confirmation. The difference between that effective rate and a reference market rate represents the price impact or spread; add any named trading and payment fees. A commission-free label cannot be used to remove a spread that is already embedded in the quote.
Withdrawal after buying
The withdrawal is a new transaction with its own charge. Check the asset, network, fee and net amount at the moment you submit it. A low trading fee on the purchase does not reduce a later blockchain or withdrawal charge, and a free cash withdrawal does not make a crypto withdrawal free.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing unlike products: an instant-buy quote and an order-book fill can have different spreads, payment costs and fee schedules. Compare the same interface and order value.
- Assuming every limit order is maker: a price that crosses the book executes immediately and can be taker.
- Using a headline rate: the displayed percentage may apply only to a particular tier, pair, region or product. Read the schedule attached to your account.
- Ignoring the net delivery amount: the amount entered for a withdrawal may not be the amount that arrives after the displayed charge.
- Treating a network fee as fixed: blockchain demand changes, and Ethereum’s priority fee can move with congestion.
- Confusing a failed transaction with a rejected one: an included transaction can consume gas before failing, while a transaction rejected for an inadequate gas limit is a different case.
- Sending on the wrong network: verify that the receiving service supports the exact asset-network combination before broadcasting.
What to check before you confirm
Fees vary by location, product, asset, account tier, payment method and time. The most reliable comparison is a like-for-like transaction preview immediately before confirmation: same asset, same order size, same funding route and same destination network. Exchanges can revise schedules, and blockchain conditions can change between a quote and a later withdrawal. Use the figures shown for your transaction rather than treating any published example as a standing promise.
The practical answer to “what will this crypto transaction cost?” is therefore a calculation, not a universal percentage: trading charge plus any spread and payment cost, followed—if you move the asset off-platform—by the displayed withdrawal or network charge. Separate those layers, verify each one on the final screen and evaluate the net amount you receive.
