Cryptocurrency can use less electricity most effectively when its consensus mechanism does not depend on energy-intensive proof-of-work competition. For proof-of-work networks such as Bitcoin, better mining hardware and cooling can reduce electricity per unit of computing, while cleaner electricity can lower emissions and flexible operations can ease pressure on the grid. Those are different improvements: cleaner power does not mean less power, and curtailing at peak times does not necessarily reduce total annual use.

Start by deciding what “more energy efficient” means

Three goals are often conflated:

  • Lower electricity consumption: reduce the power needed to secure and operate a network.
  • Lower emissions: use electricity with a lower carbon intensity, even if consumption stays the same.
  • Less strain on the grid: shift or pause demand when local electricity is scarce or expensive.

A measure can help one goal without helping the others. That distinction matters when evaluating claims about cryptocurrency and energy.

Change the consensus design to address network-wide electricity demand

Proof-of-work networks require miners to expend computational effort competing to add blocks. Proof-of-stake systems instead use staked tokens as collateral and validators to confirm activity; the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says proof-of-stake requires significantly less computing power and electricity than proof-of-work. This makes consensus design the most direct structural lever for reducing electricity demand associated with network security. EIA’s explanation of cryptocurrency mining and electricity use describes the difference.

Ethereum demonstrates that a major network can make this kind of protocol change: Cambridge’s methodology records its transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake on 15 September 2022. The cited sources establish the direction of the change, but not a single comparable percentage reduction to apply to every network. Nor do they establish that all proof-of-stake systems consume identical amounts of energy. Cambridge’s Ethereum methodology documents the transition.

Improve mining operations where proof-of-work remains

Choose efficient hardware, but assess the whole operation

Bitcoin mining operators can reduce electricity per unit of computation by using more efficient application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). A useful hardware measure is joules per terahash; operators also need to account for power draw, cooling needs, electricity price and source, and how consistently the equipment will run.

A more efficient machine does not guarantee lower total network consumption. As equipment improves, rising mining competition and puzzle difficulty can offset some or all of the hardware-level efficiency gain. The International Energy Agency (IEA) describes these interacting forces, including network hashrate, difficulty, hardware and facility overhead. The IEA’s discussion of Bitcoin energy use explains why efficiency improvements should not be treated as a promise of lower network-wide demand.

Reduce facility overhead

Cooling, lighting and other non-computing infrastructure also use electricity. Better facility design and cooling management can reduce that overhead, but the result depends on the equipment and operating conditions. The EIA and IEA both identify facility loads alongside mining hardware as factors in electricity demand. These operational changes are relevant to mining operators, not to someone who simply holds or uses cryptocurrency.

Use cleaner electricity and flexible operation for different grid outcomes

Mining near underused generation, direct power sources, renewable generation or energy that might otherwise be wasted can change the source of electricity consumed. That may affect emissions, but it does not by itself make the mining process use less electricity. Its impact depends on the local power system and on what would otherwise happen to that electricity.

For perspective, Cambridge’s 28 April 2025 survey-informed estimate put Bitcoin mining’s annual electricity consumption at 138 TWh and its network-wide emissions at 39.8 MtCO2e. The survey reported that sustainable sources made up 52.4% of the mining energy mix—42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear—while natural gas accounted for 38.2% and coal for 8.9%. These are estimates based on reported data representing 48% of global mining activity, not direct metering of every miner. The reported sustainable share is not evidence that mining consumed less electricity or was emissions-free. Cambridge’s 2025 mining-energy survey findings provide the estimates and coverage qualification.

Flexible operation addresses timing and grid strain. The EIA describes miners temporarily curtailing activity during peak periods or when wholesale electricity prices rise, including through demand-response programs. Whether that helps depends on local grid conditions; a temporary pause can ease demand at a constrained time without eliminating the energy use or necessarily lowering total annual consumption.

Read energy comparisons with their limits in mind

Network-wide energy estimates are not universal meter readings. Cambridge revised its Bitcoin consumption methodology after finding periodic overestimation in an earlier index. Its 2025 estimate uses reported data covering 48% of global mining activity, so its date, method and coverage should accompany the figure whenever it is cited. Cambridge’s explanation of its improved Bitcoin electricity assessment describes the methodological revision.

Be cautious with “energy per transaction” figures. For proof-of-work systems, network energy use is not simply proportional to the number of transactions processed. A transaction-based number can therefore mislead if presented as a direct measure of total network impact. Likewise, a comparison such as Ethereum using 0.005% of Bitcoin’s power demand is specific to the EIA’s cited data and is not a universal per-transaction comparison. The EIA’s comparison and explanation should be read in that context.

How to evaluate an energy-efficiency claim

  • Identify the claimed outcome: less electricity, fewer emissions, or less grid stress.
  • Check what is being measured: a device, a facility, or the whole network.
  • Look for scope and date: annual or hourly use, geographic coverage, estimation method and data coverage.
  • For mining hardware, include overhead: compare joules per terahash alongside cooling, power source, utilization and network difficulty.
  • For electricity sourcing, separate mix from consumption: a higher low-carbon share can lower emissions without cutting electricity demand.
  • For demand response, ask about local conditions: flexible load can help during constrained periods, but does not automatically reduce total energy use.
